Snatched from a bustling Chinese street and thrown into a cage, Meyli sees the fear on the faces of the other dogs crammed into the back of the truck with her. After a few minutes, the driver stops at a compound and begins throwing the frightened dogs into a holding pen.
Then the worst of Meyli's ordeal begins. Her eyes widen in terror as workers yank the dogs from the pen one by one and bludgeon them over the head with sticks. The overpowering smell of blood and the agonized yowls of other animals make her heart thump in her chest. In a few moments, it will be her turn to be hauled onto the filthy killing floor.
This Chinese New Year, terrified dogs are being abused and killed so their skins can be made into belts, collar trim, and toys that are sold in the West. PETA is working to expose such cruelty and stop its profitability—but we need your help.
Stories such as this are far more common than you might think. Video from a PETA investigation shows workers grabbing dogs with pincers, bashing them over the head, slitting their throats, and peeling their skin off—sometimes while they are still alive. Dogs cower in fear and writhe in pain on floors covered with blood and guts. One employee told the investigator that the place he was inside—just that one operation alone—bludgeons and skins between 100 and 200 of them a day.
The investigator saw dog leather being made into fashion gloves, work gloves, and other products. And because the material is deliberately mislabeled and shipped around the world, it's possible that items sold anywhere in Asia could be made with the skin of dogs just like Meyli.
Our riveting, one-of-a-kind exposés cast light on the darkest corners of the skins industry, and with your help, we're making progress toward stopping this grisly trade. After PETA released footage of rabbits screaming while workers tear out their soft fur, many thousands of kind people stopped buying items made with angora—now, the industry is a mere shadow of its former self. Thanks to campaigns by PETA and our international affiliates, the global demand for animal skins has dropped so dramatically that in China, the world's largest fur exporter, the remaining processing plants are operating with skeleton crews. PETA and our affiliates are also pushing more and more retailers to stop selling exotic skins and leather clothing and frequently work with compassionate Chinese celebrities, including Sun Li, Yang Mi, and Chen Bolin, who use their star power to highlight the cruelty of the skins trade.
Finding and exposing the hideous places where animals are harmed or killed, managing to get inside them to document the abuse, and publishing the shocking images and videos internationally—we're doing all that we can to keep the plight of animals in the spotlight and on shoppers' minds when they are about to make a buying decision. But as long as dogs and other animals are still suffering in slaughterhouses, laboratories, and other dismal places around the world, we must continue working hard and keep the pressure on—and we need you with us.
In the remote hills of Western Thailand, poor Ruth was a victim of one of the saddest, most silent kind of animal abuse.

Her owner watched as she slowly wasted away, dying of hunger.
Thai Animal Sanctuary
One day her owner just decided to stop feeding her! How many times she must have gone to her empty bowl, licked at its edges, looked to her owner. Wondering why.

The horror and sorrow of Ruth’s past life never leaves me. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my decades of helping animals, it’s that cruelty takes many forms.

That’s why I’ve been so pleased with the work of our partners at the Thai Animal Sanctuary. They take in any animal who is suffering and being abused, not only street dogs.

They took in Ruth, too. She was a living skeleton by then.

They brought her back from starvation, and Ruth was dying before their eyes. Please, help us continue their brave work.
Thai Animal Sanctuary
Giving so that my team and I can help our partners like the Thai Animal Sanctuary is one of the ways you make a massive difference for animals all over the world.

They really need your help. In Western Thailand where Ruth was being starved, dogs on the streets bear the fresh scars of equally awful abuses.

Many have festering, open wounds, and broken little bodies from being beaten or run over by cars. Many more are sick because no one ever bothered to get them care.

It is so sad to see this kind of suffering, especially when you love animals like we do. And the thing is, even the sickest dogs will try to wag their tails to greet you.

That’s how badly they long for a new life!

I know Thailand may be far from home. I know you may never have been there. But you know the joy of a loving animal friend. You know how it hurts when they suffer.

The latest prediction is that the South African city could reach “Day Zero” – the day the city’s taps will run dry – in July.

It would be the world’s first major city to run out of water, and could plunge its residents and animals into crisis.

Government officials and human relief agencies are already helping the people. It’s up to us to help the animals.

Our Mdzananda Clinic that provides low-cost veterinary services to community animals in the Khayelitsha township is preparing for “Day Zero.”

With your gift today, you can help provide drinking water ... help us build water tanks and collection gutters for when it finally rains again ... help us access underground water, and more.

There’s no telling how bad it could get, so we’re doing everything we can to help as soon as we can.

It could take half a year before the taps are turned on again after “Day Zero.” Our Mdzananda Clinic could be rationing from stockpiles for months.

Animals are being killed in the UK countryside, and those responsible are getting away with it.
This Sunday is the 13th Anniversary of the Hunting Act 2004 coming to effect, and despite hunting with dogs being banned in England, Wales and Scotland for more than 10 years, not to mention it still being legal in Northern Ireland, hunts are still killing wildlife.

Still killing foxes. Still killing deer. Still killing hares. Still killing mink. Still getting away with it.

But you can take a stand. Sign the petition today.
Your signature is vital in calling for governments and land owners to stop the killing of animals by hunts in the UK, and you can help make it the biggest petition of its kind.

You have been instrumental in protecting the Hunting Act for many years, and thanks to you it is now finally time to push for something better. For better laws. For better protection of wildlife from hunts.

Hunts have found many ways to circumvent the law and get away with killing wildlife. Whether through so-called ‘trail’ hunting, abusing exemptions in the law or exploiting legal loopholes, thousands of animals are being killed across the UK every year with impunity.

Demand Justice for Tortured Kitten! On Thanksgiving day last year, law enforcement officers in Covina, California responded to a call about a crying kitten. The caller reported the kitten had been crying for a couple of days at a neighbor's property. When the deputies arrived, no one was home. They hopped the fence to locate the source of the crying. What they found was shocking and horrific - a calico kitten caught in an illegal steel-jaw leg hold trap. She'd been suffering for days in the trap with no food or water, her leg badly broken by the trap's jaws. She was later euthanized due to the extent of her suffering and injuries. Her killer must be brought to justice! TAKE ACTION
