This incredible bird is a European eagle owl, and was brought into us after being found grounded in a field. Eagle owls are not native species here in the UK, and so the hunt was on to find out where it came from!

This cruel procedure was performed on thousands of goats and rabbits—while cruelty-free in vitro techniques have been proved more reliable.

Dogs Reunited One Year After Their Rescue

Buddy and Shelby have come a long way in a year. When PETA's fieldworker found them, both dogs were filthy and underweight, spending every moment confined to a trash-strewn pen. The canine siblings both tested positive for heartworms, which is extremely common in neglected "backyard dogs," whose owners often can't—or won't—pay for preventive medication. We promptly transferred the winsome canine siblings to the high-traffic, open-admission Virginia Beach SPCA, with which we frequently partner, confident that someone would fall in love with them. We were right. Before long, each was adopted into a new, loving home. Watch what happens when they see each other for the first time after their rescue one year ago.

This is probably not the background you'd expect for the thousands of brightly colored shells—each housing a tiny crustacean—for sale at shops lining the boardwalk on your summer beach vacation. But after receiving a disturbing tip about Brelean Corporation, a self-proclaimed supplier of captive hermit crabs to PetSmart, Petco, and other retailers, PETA took a closer look.

In 2005, when then-Senator Barack Obama needed a wordsmith to capture the soaring spirit of his 2004 Democratic National Convention speech, he hired a 24-year-old named Jon Favreau. Fresh from college, Favreau had earned a sterling reputation as a speechwriter for John Kerry during his presidential run, and now he was tasked with helping lift Obama to the presidency.

The wunderkind political messager, who Obama has called his "mind reader" and considered one of his most valued confidantes, served as his chief speechwriter from 2005 to 2013.

"Favs," as the president calls him, was named as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in 2009.

"If a Donald Trump became president, he doesn't have the executive authority to suddenly create a police surveillance state that has no checks on it whatsoever—I think that's very important," says Jon Favreau, Barack Obama's chief speechwriter and close confidante from 2005 to 2013. Reason TV's Justin Monticello sat down with Favreau for a spirited exchange about Obama's legacy on surveillance and transparency.

Favreau says he wouldn't trust President Trump with current executive authorities like, say, having an extrajudicial kill list. But speaking of transparency, what does he think about NSA whistleblowers like Edward Snowden and Thomas Drake?

"If you leak information, it is a severe penalty and very, very illegal. And if you don't want to, and if you feel like your conscience is going to stop you, then don't sign up and don't get your security clearance and go find another job," states Favreau. "Those people have to be prosecuted because it's part of the law."
