Campaign to Stop Craigslist Users From Selling Pets Still Going Strong! We would like to thank everyone who has signed the petition and signed up on our website in support of our “secret” campaign to force Craigslist to stop facilitating the sale and rehoming of pets.

As many of you know, our written requests to the CEO of Craigslist to voluntarily regulate the "Pets" category have all been met with a surprising level of opposition. We feel their unwillingness to meet us in discussion and the lack of respect they have shown our organization, and more importantly YOU, the now 406,000 people who have signed this petition, is unacceptable.

The good news is this experience has provided us with ample motivation to continue our fight until a satisfactory resolution has been achieved. In the spirit of our commitment to innovation, we have come up with a unique way to "persuade" Craigslist back to the discussion table.

More information will be coming soon so if you haven't done so already, please sign up on our website www.FEND.ngo to stay in the loop.

New Non-Profit, BEAST, Wants You to Help End Animal Cruelty – By Eating Vegan Food and Partying! Ravi DeRossi may just be one of the boldest restauranteurs in New York. With his steady success in the food and nightlife space, DeRossi has plans to make all of his restaurants as animal-free as possible. In February, he announced that he would make the menu of his East Village tiki bar, Mother of Pearl, all vegan. As if that wasn’t awesome enough, shortly after he announced that he intends to make all of his 14 other restaurant and bars vegan too!
Mother of Pearl
“You don’t realize that the average restaurateur does three times more destruction [to the environment] than the average person,” DeRossi told Eater, “I have 15 restaurants and bars. It started to weigh on me.”

Despite the fact that DeRossi has been vegetarian and vegan for a large part of his life, he only recently decided to implement the same ideology in his restaurants and bars. The change, which stemmed from a combination of factors, including environment and personal, started last year when DeRossi opened up Avant Garden, his vegan “passion project.” All delicious food aside, DeRossi didn’t want his contributions to only be food-related. And so, in conjunction with the Avant Garden’s opening, DeRossi launched a non-profit aimed at ending animal cruelty called BEAST (Benefit to End Animal Suffering Today).

In a recent conversation with One Green Planet, DeRossi explained that he wants to change the face of animal rights via his new non-profit. BEAST, as he puts it, is a movement aimed at ending harm to animals, but in a fun way. To achieve this mission, BEAST will organize fundraising events in DeRossi’s restaurants where all the profits will go to organizations working to help animals that have applied for a grant. Their tagline? “We party like we give a damn.” And party they will, indeed. After a year of planning, BEAST will finally launch on April 14, 2016. The launch party, which is a paid event includes a 7-course vegan meal at Mother of Pearl and an after party at Cienfuegos. Considering the delicious food made by renowned plant-based chef Daphne Cheng, the open bar, and the fact that all proceeds will be going to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, we’d say this swanky event will be well worth it!
beast_launch
BEAST is launching in NYC but plans to expand nationwide with events and then eventually go worldwide. DeRossi’s bold decision truly demonstrates how strong the thread between the food we eat, the planet we inhabit, and the animals we coexist with actually is. While DeRossi could have easily started BEAST and left his restaurant empire untouched; his decision to do both shows that he understands how tightly the issues are interwoven and that to do one and not the other would only result with him placed on both sides of the issue.

Yulin dog meat festival: activists urge China to ban annual dog eating festival

Our Latest Dog Meat Trade Raid. The dog meat trade is a vile attack on nature, perpetuated by criminals seeking to make money from the abuse of animals. Network for Animals has fought the dog meat trade since 1997, and our latest raid occurred on March 28th 2016.

Following weeks of surveillance, our team arrived at the compound in Batangas, Philippines, with a team of three unarmed police officers. As our team entered, two large men kept attempted to block our path but did not resist for long. We moved carefully however, after spotting a pistol magazine on top of a small table.

As we began searching the area, a dog meat trader inside a small hut opened up a cage and released an estimated 21 dogs, who immediately scampered down a creek to escape the area.

Finding the remaining dogs took a great deal of effort, not least due to the summer temperature having hit 102 degrees fahrenheit. Eventually, following the sound of whimpering, we came across the cage featured in the video above. No food. No water. Just fifteen dogs, most clinging to life, all with barely space to move.

We carried all surviving dogs up the mountain and loaded them to an ambulance where we gave them water. Most drank like they had never tasted it before – utter desperation.  We then carefully transported them to the PSPCA pound, for veterinary treatment and to work towards rehabilitation and rehoming.

If these dogs had made it to slaughter, they would have experienced a barbaric death, been butchered, and sent to the north of the Philippines where there meat would have been sold as food for humans. Thanks to years of work by ourselves and others, the sale of dog meat is illegal and the general perception of dog meat as human food is drastically changing. You can learn more about the Dog Meat Trade in our campaigns area.

Our team were relieved to escape this experience with their lives. Please show them your support by making a  donation, no matter how small.

There isn't much time.  So I'll get right to the point.

Boknal Days are coming.

It starts in South Korea in less than 16 weeks.  As foretold by the lunar calendar, the hottest days of the year are drawing near.  Boknal Days...

That's when the torture and crude slaughter of dogs begins.  The murders go on for nearly a month.
In Defense of AnimalsThese scared, sentient creatures will be smuggled to makeshift butchers by the sweltering, stacked-high truckload so their meat can be sold for Boknal Days soups and "health" tonics.

Starting in less than 16 weeks they will be hanged, boiled, beaten, electrocuted, and burned to death for the profit in their flesh and bones during this year's bloody atrocities.

Please consider contributing as little as $10 for your Boknal Days donation, to help IDA document, expose and hopefully end as much of the midsummer dog slaughter as possible.

I wouldn't come to you with my heart on my sleeve if it weren't absolutely critical.

However I have got to put IDA boots on-site BEFORE the slaughter begins.  Let me explain...
For more than ten years, trust and generosity like yours has funded IDA's fight to end Asian's entrenched dog and cat meat trade.

With your help we've achieved significant results: public pressure inside South Korea is mounting to stop this despicable trade.  And the illegal dog meat industry feels the pinch.
IDA MUST be ready for anything!  Please help now if you possibly can.
Click here to put IDA boots on the ground... in country... and in advance, and together we will alert the world to this despicable slaughter.

I'm so grateful for your generosity and conviction to this point, and hope that you will find a way to act fast, right now, by donating whatever you possibly can.  Just click here.  Please.

Boknal Dog-Killing Days Will Be Here Soon

In Defense of Animals
Time marches inexorably forward, and the Boknal Days of South Korea are fast approaching.

We are so deeply honored that so many of you have pledged your hard earned support to ensure that when that time arrives, In Defense of Animals will be there; on the ground and on the scene.

Thank you so very much for the generous outpouring of support for our efforts to end this annual festival of suffering and slaughter. Each year in the sweltering summer heat, dogs and cats are mercilessly tortured and killed so that a mythical 'tonic' can be brewed which will supposedly enable people to better weather the summer heat.

Your help means so much to us as we wage an inspired battle over outdated cultural norms and values. Sadly, the casualties in this fight will be the innocent and voiceless dogs and cats who are cruelly slaughtered each year for this traditional 'health tonic' whose only value is the perpetuation of an inhumane and atrocious superstition.

The pressure is mounting in opposition to this antiquated and unnecessary practice and you have been with us every step of the way. Your support of this visionary campaign puts you on the right side of history as we prepare to once more stand and face down years of customs and folklore. On the ground and with our supporters beside us we cannot lose!

If you have not already done so,  please consider making a generous contribution today to ensure that In Defense of Animals will have an unmistakable and lasting impact on this year’s bloody Boknal atrocities.
Animal abuse: dog's mouth and head taped shut, found limping down street by police
Justice for Dog Chained and Left to Die With Mouth Taped Shut.
Target: Elton Mathis, Waller County, Texas District Attorney
Goal: Harshly prosecute person who left a dog to die while chained to a rock with its mouth taped shut.
A young dog was found chained to a rock with its mouth taped shut. Randy Abke and his wife, the couple that found the dog, nicknamed him Rusty and called the Sheriff’s Office. Both Randy and the officer responding to the call believe the dog was left to die. The dog was treated by a veterinarian and since he did not have a microchip, the Abkes have adopted him.
Demand the perpetrator of this heinous act of cruelty is located and prosecuted for every possible charge.
Dear Attorney Mathis,
A defenseless young dog was left to die chained to a rock with its mouth taped shut. When rescuers Randy Abke and his wife noticed the dog chained to the bottom of a creek bed, they called the Sheriff’s Office. Both the responding officer and the Abkes believe the dog was deliberately left to die. Fortunately, the dog received veterinary care and has been adopted by the Abkes.
We demand the perpetrator of this horrible crime is located and prosecuted on all possible charges.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]

We have a long way to go, but don't give up, we can never give up. Those animals need our support and voices to tell the Government that we want change NOW!
Thank you for your support.

About This Petition
Animals are being abused, neglected, tortured and killed all across Canada at an alarming rate. The laws are not tough enough on the criminals who do these atrocious acts to innocent lives. Animal protection and welfare laws should be enforced in ALL areas of Canada, specifically remote communities & unorganized territories.

Protect Farmed Animals Suffering at Cruel Research Facilities

In Defense of Animals
Did you know that the Animal Welfare Act provides ZERO protection for farmed animals? This is because the law currently defines acceptable treatment of animals according to their use rather than their capacity to suffer.

Right now, you have an opportunity to help pass an important piece of legislation for farmed animals, 'The Animal Welfare in Agricultural Research Endeavors Act'; H.R. 746/S. 388. If passed, this act would extend the federal Animal Welfare Act to include cows, pigs, sheep, and other animals at federal agriculture research facilities.

The exemption of farmed animals from current legislation has led to horrific abuses. Last year,  the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center was exposed in an investigative report in the New York Times. Heinous cruelty at the Center is said to include: locking pigs in steam chambers until they died; breeding calves born with "deformed vaginas" and tangled legs; and leaving lambs abandoned by their mothers in pastures to die of exposure or starvation.

This is horrific and totally unacceptable.

Passing The Animal Welfare in Agricultural Research Endeavors Act is an important first step in recognizing that farmed animals are no different to any other species in their capacity to suffer. Click here to take action.

Justice for 23 Horses Starved to Death on Olympic Wrestler’s Property.

Target: Jim Currell, Prosecutor Sergeant
Goal: Severely prosecute Bruce Akers after 23 dead horses were found on his property.
More than 40 sick, dead or dying horses were found on the property of a former Olympic wrestler in Australia. Some of the dead horses had apparently been piled together. After seeing “leg movement in the air,” a Melbourne man made the grisly discovery on his neighbor’s property.
Bruce Akers, the owner of the horses and the property where they were discovered, has been charged with 92 counts of animal cruelty. While bringing charges against Akers is the right step, it must not be viewed as the end of this tragic story. Mr. Akers seems to show little remorse for fate of the animals under his care. His lawyer, Emily Buchanan, has even tried to deflect blame by noting that reports of asbestos contamination at a nearby dump.
Call on prosecutors to take Mr. Akers alleged animal abuse seriously and, if he is found guilty, ensure that he is thoroughly punished. The person responsible for the tragic neglect, abuse and cruel deaths of so many animals must be made to understand the extent of his wrongdoing.
Dear Prosecutor Sergeant Jim Currell,
It has been reported that a chilling scene of animal cruelty has occurred. A man, having seen unusual movement, discovered a horse starving in its paddock. When authorities were summoned to investigate, they found 23 dead horses on the property–some of them were even piled together, along with another couple dozen of sick or dying horses.
The owner of the property and the horses, Bruce Akers, has been charged with 92 counts of animal cruelty. While it is promising that charges have been brought against the alleged abuser and the surviving horses are being re-homed, these should only be the first steps. The Herald Sun reports that, rather than appearing contrite as the charges against him were read out, Mr. Akers appeared “stone-faced.” Moreover, his lawyer has tried to deflect blame by noting that reports of asbestos contamination at a nearby dump.
Please zealously prosecute your case against Mr. Akers to ensure that, if he is found responsible for the deaths of the horses under his care, he understands the suffering that he caused and can never again harm another animal.
Sincerely,

Lions and Bears STARVING in tiny cages in Armenia's worst zoo
Lions and Bears STARVING in tiny cages in Armenia's worst zoo

Banging their heads against the wall in despair and peering forlornly through the bars of their tiny, stark cages, these are the inmates of "the world's saddest zoo". Just three lions, two bears and two guinea pigs live out their boring, hunger-filled days in tiny cages, displaying all the signs of creatures slowly being driven mad by their unnatural existence.

This collection of neglected animals are the remainder of a billionaire's whim. They were bought as entertainment to be paraded before his friends at jungle-themed parties. However, the billionaire vanished, along with any care for the animals he had bought and caged.

An elderly couple came across the starving animals, and now feeds them on a starvation diet of slaughterhouse scraps and scavenged woodland plants. A spokesman for International Animal Rescue said, "The fate of these animals should not be dependent on the philanthropy of an elderly couple who barely have enough for themselves. It is vital that they are moved to a place where they can be better cared for."

Update: Free the Tigers at Houston's Downtown Aquarium. Call the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This is an unacceptable way for animals to live in 2016. If enough people stand up against this cruelty, the President of Armenia will have to take matters into his own hands and provide a humane living situation for these animals.
Despite more than 84,000 signatures on this petition, the AZA has not yet reconsidered the accreditation of the Downtown Aquarium - Houston. The AZA claims that accreditation signifies a commitment to animal care and conservation.

If you agree with us that keeping tigers in concrete enclosures is not representative of this standard, call AZA!
