The first ever Animal Law Boot Camp is only a few weeks away! On November 11, join us for a half day interactive webinar to learn how animal law intersects with other fields. You don’t want to miss this chance to learn about cutting-edge developments in animal law.
Animal Law Boot Camp
It’s often said that “animal law is all law” because issues involving animals cut across multiple fields of law. From protecting the First Amendment rights of undercover investigators in the fight against Ag-Gag laws or pushing anti-cruelty laws to protect more animals, virtually every area of the law impacts animals. In this first program, participants will learn from experts in the areas of constitutional law, environmental law, ethics, and criminal law. A Q&A session will be held at the end of the program.
For attorneys seeking CLE credits, 3.25 general CLE credits and 1 ethics credit are available from the Oregon State Bar. For other states, please refer to your state bar’s requirements regarding webinar CLE credit.

Inside illegal dog meat slaughterhouses in the Philippines, the collars of the dead are everywhere.

Scattered on tables. Hanging like trophies from ceilings. Speckled with blood.

Each one a haunting reminder that someone’s beloved pet was snatched, bound and gagged without food or water in stifling heat, then tortured and butchered.

And all so some twisted humans can feast off their flesh.

Network for Animals has fought this evil industry for twenty years. But because the dog meat trade is now banned in the Philippines thanks to support like yours, it’s gone underground.
Please help NFA continue our fight to end the illegal Philippines dog meat trade!
Please help NFA continue our fight to end the illegal Philippines dog meat trade!

Imagine if your dog was kidnapped, tortured, killed, and eaten! It’s essential that we keep fighting.

Smugglers will snatch any dog on sight they see, then cram them into holding cages until enough unlucky souls are collected to make the secret dash to the slaughterhouse worth the risk.

Muzzled so tightly with string that their noses swell with blood, in the suffocating heat they cannot pant. Cannot drink. Cannot eat. Almost half the dogs will die in transit.

Their captors don’t care, it just saves the illegal slaughterhouse the job. The butcher sells both the dead and the living.

Most haunting of all, are the collars, displayed like trophies in these makeshift houses of horror.

No dog, ever again, should have to watch another dog hacked or clubbed to death because of due to some sick notion that dog flesh is sweeter if the animal has suffered! Now is when things get tough.

These evil monsters are in our cross-hairs. We’ve kicked down the doors of dog meat traders, pushed police to take on vendors that serve dog meat, risked our lives in roadblocks and slaughterhouse raids and rescued dogs every time.
Please help NFA continue our fight to end the illegal Philippines dog meat trade!
They are in our cross-hairs. We’ve kicked down the doors of dog meat traders, pushed police to take on vendors that serve dog meat, conducted raid after raid, and rescued dogs along the way.

It’s thanks to your generous funding of our work, and I’m grateful for you every day.

But I just can’t stop thinking about those collars. I can’t stop thinking about the beautiful dogs who once wore them, and the grim, gruesome journey more will face if we don’t reach them in time.

Please help now so we can collar every loathsome smuggler and trader. Give to help the dogs. Give to help us end the illegal dog meat trade in the Philipppines forever.

At one raid we found a freezer stuffed with the butchered corpses of 44 forty-four dogs. 44 friends, who will never again know love. We carefully buried each one. As we did, I promised I would work to my last breath to prevent tragedies like theirs from continuing and repeating! Please, if you can, make them a promise too. Give now to help end the illegal dog meat trade in the Philippines.

Marine Animals Are Choking on Plastic Waste – Let’s Act to Help Them!

Did you know that 50 percent of sea turtles have plastic in their stomachs and by 2050, 99 percent of seabirds will have ingested plastic waste? These mind-blowing numbers represent only a fraction of the harm posed by the increasing ocean trash problem. According to scientists, more than 8 million metric tons of plastic is entering our ocean every year … and it’s growing. Within the next decade,  we could be faced with a pound of plastic for every three pounds of fish!

If you think those numbers are as crazy as we do, then we NEED you to sign the petition on Care2 started by the World Wildlife Fund in support of the Save Our Seas Act. Read more here.

The Rare Canada Lynx Needs Your Help to Survive!

Budget cuts and careless and ignorant governing decisions have been risking the health of our nation’s people, our natural environments, and the survival of wildlife, including rare and endangered species. One of these rare species at risk of losing its habitat due to these budget cuts is the elusive Canada Lynx, a beautiful wild cat that is rarely spotted in the wild.
As a petition on Care2 written by The Nature Conservancy USA states, the Canada Lynx makes areas of Montana its home, but that natural habitat is under threat due to budget cuts that will take away funds for key conservation efforts like the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Read more here.

Over a Quarter of Yellowstone’s Bison Are Set to Be Killed this Year! Let’s Stop This Tragedy

Yellowstone National Park has long been a safe refuge for bison, but these populations are being targeted by governing authorities. Yellowstone’s biologists counted 4,816 bison at the park this past August, which is a major drop from the 5,500 counted in 2016. And now officials have ordered for the capture and slaughter of 1,250 of these remaining bison, which is over a quarter of the bison population in Yellowstone.
When pressed to explain the logic behind this senseless mass capture and slaughter, officials gave bogus excuses akin to those used for culling and slaughtering America’s wild horses – to protect cattle. Read more here.

Help Shut Down Cruel Hog-Dog Fights in Indonesia!

Dogs are not the only animals abused in these fighting operations. Other animals, like kittens and pigs (or hogs or boars), are regularly used as bait for fighting dogs who have been violently trained to become vicious and attack. Although these “hog-dog” fighting operations are common in the South in the U.S., a petition on Care2 explains that the practice is a common pastime in Java, Indonesia as well.
The petition explains the scene of these hog-dog fights in Java: crowds of people encircle around pits where dogs are forced to fight against wild boars, desperately fighting for their lives until just one is left standing. Read more here.

Nearly 1,000 American Black Bears Have Been Killed for Sport in Maryland – Let’s Stop This!

In 1953, only twelve black bears remained in Maryland, prompting conservationists to take action and help rebuild their populations. Over the decades, bear populations began to grow in the state, and conservation efforts were not in vain. Since 2004, however, the state has permitted the hunting of this species, leading to the unnecessary murderous death of 925 American black bears, 103 of which were cubs.
Yet another barbaric bear hunt is scheduled to take place this October 23-26, 2017, and this petition is aimed to speak out against this and stop it before it is too late. Read more here.

Ban the International Dog & Cat Meat Trade. In Defense of Animals has led the fight to end the heinous torture and killing of dogs and cats for human consumption. We have been growing awareness, gaining staunch public support, and building political momentum to end this barbaric industry. U.S. Representative Alcee L. Hastings has introduced a resolution that could end dog and cat meat once and for all. We must take this opportunity to give the dogs and cats our support! TAKE ACTION

Victory! Liberty for Circus Elephants in New York State. We're thrilled to announce a reprieve for elephants forced to perform in circuses in the state of New York! We applaud New York's Governor Andrew W. Cuomo for signing the Elephant Protect Act which bans the use of elephants in circuses and traveling exhibits. We also give thanks to all our New York supporters who signed our action alert supporting the passage of this bill! The Elephant Protect Act, sponsored by animal heroes, Senator Terrence Murphy and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, takes effect in two years. We must now focus our efforts nationally and make it illegal for all beings to be confined and paraded around for entertainment! READ MORE

Ensure Killer of Beloved Community Cat Faces Felony Charge! In the early morning hours of October 4, a dark sedan pulled up outside of Zeus' Place, an animal rescue located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sitting on the curb out front were two community cats. The sedan slowed to a stop and the driver raised what appeared to be a rifle and shot at the closest one, killing Blackie, a beloved community cat cared for by Zeus' Place employees. The killer has been found and charged. For the sake of Blackie and animals who are mercilessly persecuted, we must ensure justice is served! TAKE ACTION

Stop the Execution Order for Wild Horses and Burros. Wild horses and burros are facing the greatest peril since the mid twentieth century, when hundreds of thousands were run down or shot from helicopters and made into pet food. The government is now making moves to gut legal protections intended to stop mass wild horse killings so they can kill wild equines and push them to the brink of extinction. We can't let this happen! TAKE ACTION

These Blind Dogs and Cats Can See and Have a Safe Haven. Mumbai, India is not a fun place to be a homeless animal. With over 30 million street dogs and untold numbers of cats, disease, competition for food and homes, as well as human resentment, can be overwhelmingly high. Add blindness to this chaotic situation — wherein dogs, cats and other animals are trying to survive in a busy country where many people live below the poverty line — and you've got a living nightmare for animals. Without sight, a dog or cat can wander into any number of problems, with cars and other vehicles ranking high on the list of dangers. While the situation for blind dogs and cats is disheartening, it is with great pleasure that we update you on our very special campaign to help them. READ MORE
