She doesn't know it yet, but after nearly 40 years of forced servitude, she is about to experience freedom.

Right now, she stands tethered by a spiked chain. Right now, she is in extreme physical and emotional pain. Right now, she knows nothing beyond the daily misery of being a begging elephant.

In the next few days the Wildlife SOS team will be on their way to the elephant we're calling Kalpana.

We wish we could show you her face, but we can't yet reveal her true identity. We wish we could show you the video of her pained, lumbering walk, but we can't chance giving away her location. Doing so could jeopardize our mission.

More than anything, we wish we could take away the 40 years of pain she's endured, but we can't change the past. What we can change - with your help - is her future. We can tend to her wounds, ease her pain, and give her a life filled with love and companionship... something she has never before experienced.

Our goal is to have Kalpana in our ambulance by next Tuesday, on the way to urgent care at the Elephant Hospital, and her eventual retirement to the Field of Dreams.

Heartbreaking news! According to Humane Society International Zimbabwe is again tearing baby elephants from the wild and sending them to Chinese zoos. This has been going on for several years now, and the baby elephants will suffer cruel captivity in zoos in China. Horrific!

This is so wrong on so many levels! Elephants belong in the wild NOT in zoos! Chinese zoos don't even have any animal welfare standards! What type of life is this gonna be now for these baby elephants?

Mundi the elephant was also taken from the wild when she was a baby, and now decades later she is still suffering at the Puerto Rico zoo!
