Help Us Ban Cruel Gestation Crates in New Jersey!
Look into her eyes. She is not a machine, but she is treated like one.
In Defense of AnimalsPigs are highly social, sensitive and intelligent animals, yet many of these animals are forcibly impregnated and jailed inside cages no larger than their own bodies. The meat industry calls these cages "gestation crates."

Right now, legislators are sitting on two important bills on both sides of the legislative process — New Jersey Senate Bill 161, and New Jersey Assembly Bill 3752. These are twin bills, and only one needs to get past all the hurdles in order to ban these cruel cages in New Jersey. We cannot let this opportunity slip by! Click here to learn more and take action

Shelter in Louisiana Is Doing All They Can to Help Stray Animals, But With a Budget of $12,000 They Desperately Need Help

SNARR Animal Rescue Northeast is desperately asking for help, and this time, it isn’t just for dogs!

The Mamou Shelter is a tiny rural shelter in the Evangeline Parish of Louisiana. This is one of the poorest and most rural parishes in the state. The animals housed in the shelter are protected from the elements and have a devoted shelter worker who dedicates her life to doing all she can to save them. But it isn’t enough. The shelter operates on an annual budget of $12,000 which means the dogs there get no medical care and can barely afford to be fed. There are no beds, no heat, and no air conditioning.

They may be safe from harm, but there is very little else in the way of help for these poor dogs!

The Mamou Shelter looks after anywhere between 60 and 80 dogs at any one time, which is a huge amount of work for a single person, especially with such a small budget.

It is heartbreaking to think this shelter is trying so hard yet can barely give these dogs the basics. Two puppies died overnight from worms, something which could have been easily treated for just $2.

SNARR is desperate to help. They sent 50 lifesaving vaccines to the shelter and will be sending more much-needed basic medication so that these dogs might stand a better chance.

There is a long wishlist on the SNARR website of things the Mamou Shelter needs, which includes items like dog coats and sweaters to keep them warm, as well as leashes, collars, toys, and so on.

SNARR is trying to organize all donations to go through their own shelter since there is a problem with theft in the area around the Mamou Shelter itself.

These dogs deserve a chance, and this shelter deserves the opportunity to be able to help them as they intended.

Shelters can literally mean the difference between life and death for some animals. Yet despite helping animals in need and taking some of the 70 million dogs and cats off our streets each year, not-for-profit shelters can only survive through generous donations and kind volunteers. It is tragic that the Mamou Shelter is trying so hard to help these dogs survive and yet doesn’t have the resources to do so.

SNARR Animal Rescue Northeast is doing all they can to help. The plan, for now, is to get supplies to the shelter, and once these dogs are in better condition, they can hopefully be found new homes. If you are in a position to donate or have anything that might be useful for these animals at the Mamou Shelter, please visit their Facebook page. Image Source: SNARR Animal Rescue Northeast
Zena the Tigress Was Dragged by Her Tail During a Seizure While "Performing" in a Circus

Animal abuse is apparently a brother and sister bonding activity, too. Artur and Karina make their living abusing 6 tigers in a circus in Russia. One of their captives, Zena the tigress, had a seizure during a show and their response is so telling — they drag her by her tail, whip her and poke at her. But the truth is: she never should have been "performing" in this circus in the first place, especially not if she is epileptic.

Sign the petition to demand this abusive circus that exploits wild animals is shut down forever.

The video of Zena's seizure shows the tiger after she had been jumping through hoops on fire, a task which is not at all natural to tigers. In fact, loud circus noises, lights, and sounds of people screaming are all very stressful to wild animals like tigers and they should never be exposed to it for human gain. But Zena is forced to do it nonetheless while the trainers yell at her and use whips to threaten her and the other five tigers.

Then Zena collapses and has a seizure that lasts over a minute. She defecates and convulses violently. And her trainer? He pulls her by her tail, whips her, and then someone throws water on her face. The audience is scared, and they should be. A wild animal is having a health problem and it's likely due to the stress of "performing" in this abusive circus.

Please sign the petition to demand that Zena and all the other animals in this circus are sent to a sanctuary and the circus is shut down!

Convicted Animal Abusers Can Adopt Pets in 35 States

Did you know that in most states a person could heinously abuse an animal and then go out and adopt a new one the next day? Even after convicted of animal abuse, there is very little keeping that person from acquiring another animal in the future in virtually every state.

That's why we are calling on every state without a law preventing convicted abusers from adopting more animals to get one on the books immediately.

This is not only protection for all animals; it is well known that there is a strong connection between animal cruelty, child abuse, domestic violence and many other crimes.

There are only 15 states that have any laws preventing known abusers from adopting animals. About half of them have a limit on how long a judge can prevent someone from owning an animal, usually 5 years or so. The rest are up to each judge. But we need every single state to be able to ban abusers from adopting animals.

Many states require mental health counseling for those convicted, which is fabulous, but not enough in terms of keeping other animals safe.

Many municipalities like New York City and Chicago have registries and don't allow abusers to adopt. But that doesn't stop abusers from just going to another county to get an animal — there is no national registry.

Please sign my petition to ask the following states to put laws on the book to prevent convicted abusers from adopting animals: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio, North Dakota, North Carolina, & New York.

Many states have laws banning animal abuse, but the penalties are light and don't deter abusers from adopting and hurting animals again. We need real laws that prevent convicted abusers from getting their hands on beautiful, innocent animals.
Simon Cowell Just Made a Large Contribution to Help Shut Down a Dog Meat Farm in South Korea

Simon Cowell might be more famous for making and breaking the dreams of generations of would-be singers across the world, yet he is also making a name for himself for having a heart of gold!

Cowell is currently supporting the Humane Society International‘s bid to close down a large dog meat farm in South Korea, donating £25,000 (and $32,700) towards the costs. This awful farm keeps over 200 dogs and puppies in cramped cages where they wait to be killed for meat. Their entire lives are spent in this confinement, with no exercise, no medical care, and absolutely no standard of life at all.

Dog meat is declining in popularity in South Korea, yet there are still thousands of dog factory farms in operation, with more than 2.5 million dogs bred annually purely for their meat! South Korea is the only country known to still farm these poor dogs, though the story isn’t much better in other countries where dog meat is consumed. There are still dogs snatched from the streets, and even in some cases from family homes.

Throughout many countries in Asia including China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, as well as South Korea, around 30 million dogs are killed and eaten each year. They are barbarically killed by electrocution which leaves them in agony for several long minutes before they succumb. This is no life for any animal, and we are pleased to hear that the farmer involved has now signed a contract for the dogs’ removal. The Humane Society will start rescuing dogs as early as next week. Dogs will be sent to waiting shelters in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and The Netherlands.

Cowell will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the rescue of these dogs. He is no stranger to supporting the #EndDogMeat campaign. In 2017 he gave an interview to a British morning program called Good Morning Britain, telling the host, “It’s like eating your friend. It’s the fact you’re eating such a kind, helpless, sweet animal.” While this point of view should extend to all animals trapped in the food system, we applaud the efforts to bring this idea into public knowledge.

Humane Society International’s UK Executive Director Claire Bass shared: “Simon’s generous donation means the world to us, and provides a huge boost to our appeal to close this horrendous dog meat farm. More than 200 dogs are languishing in the most appalling conditions, but we have a real chance to save them. With every dog farm we close and every farmer we help switch to a more profitable, humane business, we’re showing the South Korean government that it’s possible to end this cruel trade. These poor dogs have had the worst lives so far, so we’re desperate to get them out of those dreadful cages and show them love, soft beds and loving arms for the first time in their lives.”

The dog meat trade is in a state of limbo in many Asian countries where it is neither illegal nor legal, yet either way, no animal deserves to suffer as these dogs do. We are excited about any progress that is made to end this cruel practice. We look forward to more stories in the future like this one, and the day when the final dog meat farm is closed down.
