Animal rescue mistake: 'Injured otter' (although it was not an Otter) saved by UK cops turns out to be a faux fur collar.

An "injured otter" has won the hearts of the Internet after being rescued by British police.

Police in the town of Newport in Shropshire raced to the scene when a caller told them the poor creature was lying wounded by the roadside, the Telegraph reported.

But cops were left scratching their heads when they found the maimed mammal was in fact a faux fur coat collar.

The cops tweeted the news of the "rescue" and nicknamed the collar "Ollie the Otter". They even gave Ollie a ride back to the station in a police car.

Once at the police station, Ollie kicked back and tuned in to Twitter to find out he'd become an online sensation.

The case has a striking similarity to a TV commercial for a chain of British opticians. In the Specsavers ad, a vet makes a similar mistake to the Newport cops.

Only in the commercial it's a fur hat which is mistaken for a sick cat, not a fur collar posing as an injured otter.

Police said the case was a good way to remind the public what to do if they did find a wounded animal, according to the Telegraph

The cops said: "OllieTheFauxOtter would like to remind everyone, if you do find an injured otter, don't approach it but call police, RSPCA or local vet."

Rescuer Thinks She Saved 1 Dog, Unknowingly Saves 6.

A rescuer thinks she's saving one dog - an abandoned, white German Shepherd with a severe case of mange when in fact she is saving six - her five pups that are yet to be born.

Gemma had a severe, but treatable case of Demodectic Mange that covered 70% of her body. Instead of taking her to the vet, her family dropped her off at the shelter. Gemma was clearly in pain. A volunteer at the shelter, Jolene, knew she had to do something.

Jolene, also an adoption counselor at St. Bonnie's Sanctuary (a part of Lange Foundation,) an animal rescue based in Canyon Country, took in Gemma and immediately started treatment for her condition. Already having a relationship with Gemma, Jolene took on the nearly 24 hour care of meds and baths. Within weeks, she was clearly healing. Her fur was growing back and she was putting on weight.

A little too much weight. Jolene found out soon enough that Gemma was pregnant and had been pregnant even before she left the shelter.

Gemma gave birth to 5 healthy puppies. The puppies were adopted while Gemma had to continue her treatment for mange.

But soon enough, Gemma found her perfect home too.

Rescued Puppy Who Nearly Froze to Death Gets a New Wardrobe Made From Children’s Socks. Arthur is a Chinese Crested/Chihuahua mix puppy who was removed from his mother too young and later abandoned in the streets of the UK. When he was finally found, this tiny puppy was suffering from a skin condition and had almost frozen to death. Although Chinese Crested dogs are a naturally hairless breed, RSPCA director Liz Woods says that this little fella was in particularly bad shape. “He had sores all over his body, weighed just 17 ounces, and was freezing cold. His body temperature was four degrees lower than it should’ve been.” Luckily for Arthur, the dedicated staff at the shelter treated his sores and came up with a solution to take the chill off of this petite little pup.

At just over a month old, this tiny fella was too small for any of the dog clothes on the market.

Luckily, the staff a the Cobham RSPCA used a bit of ingenuity and created tiny sweaters for him using children’s socks.

Now, at eight weeks old, Arthur, is less that five inches tall and tips the scale at a mere 17 ounces.

But don’t let his size fool you. Now that his skin is clearing up, this tiny pooch is ready to have some fun!

Victory! Rescued Deer in Danger of Being Executed by Authorities Wins Freedom and Spot in Sanctuary. In December 2015, 19-year-old Andrew Foots came across an orphaned fawn in Victoria, Australia. The young man decided to rescue the baby deer, naming him Rudolph. Giving him food, water, and love in the warmth of their home, Foots and his family planned to care for Rudolph until he was well enough to be taken in by a wildlife rescue. They brought the deer to a veterinarian so he could be evaluated and they could learn how to best rehabilitate the animal. However, when officers from the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport, and Resources (DEDJTR) found out about the foster deer, they showed up at the family’s door with a court order from the local magistrate, demanding that Rudolph be turned in to city officials in order to be killed! They then took the tiny deer away.

Urgent Help Needed to Save Rescued Orphan Fawn From Senseless Death Warrant

The family hired a lawyer to help save Rudolph from this fate. Working with Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, they found a home for Rudolph at the Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, Rudolph would have the opportunity to grow up with other rescued animals and hopefully be released back into the wild one day. Finding a home for Rudolph at a wildlife sanctuary seemed to be the perfect solution to the problem, yet the Magistrate signed the poor animal’s death warrant anyway. The Foot family appealed the decision, and on February 23, the Supreme Court ruled in Rudolph’s favor!

Rudolph will no longer be in the hands of authorities who were literally waiting to bring the ax down on him. Instead, this little deer will be able to live free from harm, and enjoy all the Reindeer games he chooses at the wildlife center.

“We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to write letters, sign petitions and support a fighting fund for Rudolph – your efforts were not in vain,” Edgar’s Mission wrote on its Facebook page.

In the coming days, Rudolph will be transported to Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary at Barwon Heads, where he will be able to live out his days with many new animal friends. Oscar and Helena, the most amazing dog rescue video.

When Let’s Adopt International found Oscar and Helen, the amazing pups in this video, they were in terrible condition. This mother and son pair were discovered hiding near an abandoned house, surrounded by garbage and rocks. Before being rescued, they’d try to find food and water in order to survive. Unfortunately, they had a hard time finding nourishment and became very weak, losing their fur hair until their skin crusted over with scar tissues.

When the Let’s Adopt International team found them, both Oscar and Helen were extremely scared and tried to run away. No one had helped them up to this point – why should they trust humans now? Helen managed to escape, but the team got Oscar and took him straight to the hospital. When he arrived, he couldn’t even stand on four legs. Soon after, the team managed to rescue Helen and took her for immediate medical treatment.

After a long battle with mange, Oscar and Helen beat the odds and made a complete 180! They’re now living the life with their adopted family. It’s so incredible to see how a little care and compassion can change everything for an animal.

Dog rescued from icy lake in Reston.

Fire and Rescue personnel saved a dog who fell through the ice into a Reston lake.

Responders were dispatched for the dog that fell through the ice at approximately 8:40 a.m. on February 17, 2016, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) announcement.

The 75-pound dog fell through thin ice on Lake Thoreau at 2004 Turtle Pond Drive in Reston. Department members say they found the dog struggling to get out of the ice upon arrival.

Crew members quickly donned ice commander suits and rescued the dog in under 10 minutes from receiving the call for help. The dog was evaluated by the medics on the scene and was turned over to the owner with no injuries, according to FCFRD.

Lost Hummingbird Gets Returned to the Wild Thanks to the Help of Jon Hamm! Who knew Don Draper saved wildlife in his spare time?! Actor Jon Hamm and friends came to the rescue of a poor hummingbird who wandered into the house. Hummingbirds are fascinating creatures who move their little wings at an amazing speed, producing a subtle hum as they zoom by. Unfortunately, birds are often fooled by streak-free windows, and zoom right into the glass. Thankfully, this hummingbird didn’t slam into any windows, and instead he slammed right into Jon Hamm!

When Jon first spotted the hummingbird, he stepped up on a chair to get close to the little guy.

Blind Senior Dog Abandoned in Shelter by Family Gets Second Chance at Life and Sight – But Needs Our Help!

Samson, who now goes by the nickname “the blind giant,” is a gentle dog with a fluffy coat and a kind demeanor. Sadly, he was found crying in a kill shelter cage after his family abandoned him. His eyes are covered by two growths and he can’t see, but the good news is his condition is reversible.

Kind People Find a Forever Home for Dog Who Waited 2 Weeks for Return of Murdered Guardian. Dogs are known as man’s best friend – they’re our loyal, furry companions, who we can always count on when we come home. And they count on us just as much as we do on them. Anyone who has ever had a dog, knows that their unconditional love is truly admirable. That’s why this story of a loyal dog who lost his human touches our hearts.

For more than two weeks, a loyal German Shepherd has been wandering around a Houston apartment complex, patiently waiting for his guardian’s return. But tragically, his human isn’t coming back.

The dog’s guardian, along with a store clerk, were killed during an armed robbery at a convenience store earlier this month, ABC News reported. Without any explanation or understanding of what has happened, this poor dog was left confused and abandoned. Neighbors said that the dog has been waiting at the door of his former home, hoping for the man’s return.

Residents of the apartment complex said that he would follow the cars in the parking lot, on a hopeless search for his best friend. However, this dog has not been left alone.

Once neighbors learned what had happened to the man, they began leaving the dog food and water at his doorstep. However, the timid animal wouldn’t come close to anyone trying to help him. The neighbors then took to social media for help.

Dog-lover Maranda Perez stepped up. She visited the German Shepherd with her own dog and slowly gained his trust for nearly an hour. Eventually, he warmed up enough for Perez to be able to put him in her car. “It just broke my heart to hear that the poor animal lost his owner, his best friend,” she told the local news station.

Perez has been caring for the dog, but he will soon be taken in by the victim’s brother, who has agreed to make this pup a part of his family. We are so pleased to know that this sweet dog will spend the rest of his days with a family who loved his human as much as he did.

Seeing the amazing display of kindness and compassion that the neighborhood showed for this pup reminds us that we can all help animals in similar situations. Sick Dog Who Was Abused and Chained to a Tree Finally Experiences Love And Kindness.

Angel is a small dog who has led a very difficult life on the mean streets. In Turkey, the country where Angel is from, like in many other places, stray animals are considered a nuisance. Instead of teaching children to pity or help these poor, starving animals, children are taught to avoid them and in some cases, they are even taught that that abusing them is ok.

This poor baby was the unfortunate victim of the latter. Angel had been tied to a tree and pelted with rocks by local children. She was only rescued after parents called in complaining that she was spreading disease. Thankfully, once He’Art of Rescue came to help, everything began to turn around for her.

He’Art of Rescue is an international group that provides care and shelter for unloved, unwanted, and forgotten animals like these. Unfortunately, Angel’s story is all too common, as street animals are the victims of unimaginable abuse all over the world. The Amazing Moment a Working Elephant Gets Her Freedom After 50 Years Hauling People.

For 50 years, this remarkable elephant, Thong Kam, served the people of Thailand. She gave up her freedom, happiness and well-being to haul people around and serve as entertainment. Thankfully, now that she’s reached the age of retirement, she’s getting the love and care she deserves.

Thong Kam has found a new home at the Elephant Nature Park, which is “dedicated to providing care and assistance to Thailand’s captive elephant population.” We’re so happy Thong Kam will finally have a chance to live in a sanctuary that values her needs and her happiness.

Little Girl Rescued Cat From Shelter at 6 – Now, She’s 34 and He’s the World’s Oldest (and Happiest) Cat! Just by looking at Corduroy the 26-year-old cat, you can tell that there is something special about him. He has an air wisdom in his eyes – and considering the fact that he now holds the title of “World’s Oldest Cat,” he certainly should!

According to UK Paper The Daily Mail, this remarkable feline was adopted from a shelter by Ashley Reed Okura, back in 1989, when she was just six years old! Many people who adopt pets at such a young age forget about them as they grow up and go off the college. But this dedicated cat guardian truly understands the meaning of a life-long commitment, as twenty years later, she is still loyal to the feisty Maine Coon cat. According to Okura, Corduroy remains in remarkably good health, despite being 121 years old in cat years.

Now that he is officially the world’s oldest cat, recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records, Corduroy has become quite the celebrity. He has an Instagram page with thousands of followers.

Aside from a special diet to maintain kidney health, Ashley says she attributes his amazing longevity to living an active life, in their wooded home of Sisters, Oregon.

Perhaps it is the crisp, fresh air that has kept this fluffy darling in such tip-top shape!

As Ashley and her husband Aaron Okuru prepare to start a family next year, they look forward to introducing Corduroy to his human siblings.

Sweet Puppy Shot 18 Times by BB Gun Makes a Remarkable Recovery Thanks to Kind People. As animal lovers, it is hard to imagine how anyone could do harm to a puppy, but unfortunately, that’s just what happened to little Brody. At only six-weeks-old, he was shot 18 times with a BB gun by a cruel human.

When the Rock Hill Police in North Carolina first spotted Brody near an apartment complex, he was surrounded by about fifteen young people, who reported that someone, “had stabbed the puppy multiple times and shot the puppy with a BB gun.” But this remarkable doggy did not give up.

The police took Brody to the patrol car and immediately transported him to the Ebenezer Animal Hospital, which just happened to be opened late that night.

Abandoned Puppy Shot By 18 BBs Makes ‘Remarkable’ Recovery

The team acted quickly. One of the doctors, Dr. Hreiz, even drove in from Charlotte to care for Brody after hours. When he took an x-ray, he not only found the 18 BBs but a number of intestinal parasites as well.

Since that terrible day, Brody has made a huge recovery. Dr. Hreiz reports that Brody is now eating, drinking, and trotting around like the sweet little pup that he is! “He seems like he’s gonna pull through,” said April Splawn, owner of Ebenezer Animal Hospital. “He’s a strong little boy. He’s really, really sweet.”

The kindness and dedication of the Ebenezer team remind us that even in the midst of such cruelty, there are amazing people who will stop at nothing to save our furry friends. It soon became clear why Rita made her decision. She was not just saving herself - soon after her rescue, she gave birth to fourteen piglets at a dog shelter! Nine survived...when we saw their story, we drove to the shelter to pick up Rita and her babies.

The family has recovered and is doing well!

Rita is one of the more than 4,000 animals we rescue each year. Some become permanent residents at our 600-acre sanctuary in the California Sierra Foothills. Others head to our adoption center, nestled in a canyon on 60-acres in the greater Bay Area of California.

Loyal dog: Texas German Shepherd waits for two weeks for murdered owner to come home.

The story of this loyal dog could very well make you cry.

We don't know the dog's name, but we know he lived in Houston, Texas with his human friend, 54-year-old Hatem Abuharbid who worked as a clerk at the Kay-B convenience store.

On the night on February 7, 2016, Abuharbid was shot to death during a robbery at the store. Obviously, it's impossible to explain to a dog that his friend and guardian is never coming home.

For about two weeks, this loyal animal stood on the stairwell in front of Abuharbid's home, dutifully waiting. When cars drove into the apartment complex near Hobby Airport, the dog would run down and check to see who was inside, before sadly returning to his second floor porch landing — where he just kept waiting.

Neighbors said they tried to leave food and water for the poor creature, but he refused to budge.

Finally, Good Samaritan Maranda Perez had an idea: she'd use her dog to help slowly gain the German Shepherd's trust, then maybe the loyal animal could be coaxed into eating something.

It worked. But it still took a few hours of gentle tries before the shaking animal allowed Perez to put a leash around his neck.

Perez will keep the orphaned animal for the next week, after which Abu-har-bid's brother plans to adopt him.

Saving Lemongrass. As the sun began to set on the summer of 2015, a tiny two-month-old harbor seal pup struggled on rocks in a Biddeford, Maine harbor. Weak and scared, the pup likely became separated from her mother. She probably hadn’t eaten for a long time because she was still a baby and learning how to feed herself. The coloring of her coat offered her protection as it camouflaged her on the rocks, but it also made it more challenging to see her in her state of distress. Luckily for the pup, however, someone spotted her and called for help – and it was just in time.

Lemongrass, as she would later be named, was in a very serious condition. Her mouth was covered in blood. She had several cuts and lacerations and had a swollen flipper. She was further at risk from a bad respiratory infection and flies were gathering around her. Without help, she wouldn’t survive much longer.

Luckily, our partner Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoMe) was on the scene. World Animal Protection’s Oceans and Wildlife Campaign Manager Elizabeth Hogan was there to assist Lynda and Dominique of MMoMe, two very experienced rescuers. They had to be cautious in their approach; if they startled her, they feared she might jump into the water, disappear and likely succumb to her injuries. It was critical to her survival that she be reached quickly without causing further distress.

Together, they were able to catch Lemongrass before she realized what was happening. Lemongrass was afraid – she even tried to take a bite out of Elizabeth. But the team was committed to saving her as she would soon learn.

“It was the first time in my life that I still found an animal cute after she nearly bit me!” Elizabeth recalled. “My immediate reaction was to feel sorry for her instead of worrying about getting bitten. She was so small and so scared, I just wanted to let her know that we were going to help her.”

The team rushed Lemongrass back to the triage center. They carefully cleaned her, took her temperature and glucose readings and worked hard to stabilize her through the night. The next morning, they moved her to the National Marine Life Center (NMLC) in Massachusetts. There, they treated her injured muzzle, a respiratory infection and the infection in her rear flipper.

Lemongrass showed steady improvements for the first few weeks. But her battle wasn’t over. She suddenly experienced a frightening setback that put her in critical condition for two weeks. She received IV fluids and tube feedings. And in the months that followed, she required further monitoring and medical attention; the staff at NMLC continued to give her highly specialized care.

Now, we’re so thrilled to report a very happy ending for Lemongrass. The road to recovery was long and arduous, but the dedication of everyone involved saved her life. Earlier this month, a fully-recovered Lemongrass was released back home into her ocean home!

Hope For Paws: Benji was homeless his whole life... WATCH what happens next! Please share. BENJI was a homeless dog his whole life. When Hope For Paws received the call about him, I asked Lisa Chiarelli to join me. Benji was very nervous, and when he realized that we were looking at him, he started running, and we started running after him! It was a little tricky because I had to keep an eye on him while running, and at the same time I had to set up my gentle snare AND keep my hand held camera straight – you’ll just have to see how I managed all that ;-)

After Lisa and I secured Benji, we got to take a close look him. Physically: he was so badly matted, covered with ticks and fleas, he bit his tongue as he was struggling to escape from us, so you’ll see a little bleeding – nothing serious. Mentally: Benji was living on the streets all his life, so human contact was so hard for him to get used to. After a 2 or 3 hours of grooming and medical care, he continued to Lisa Chiarelli’s house where for 10 days he almost didn’t move… frozen, always looking for a place to hide, and not wanting anyone to touch him. As usual, Lisa’s Pit Bull mixes - Lola and Frankie, decided to help Benji overcome his fears, and the result will make you so happy!!!

After we could see the change in him, Benji continued for further rehabilitation with our friends at PAL rescue, and they will also handle his adoption.

The process took 5 months of love and care – these things take time.

This Incredible Man Left His Corporate Career to Give Adoptable Senior Shelter Pups Makeovers. Everybody enjoys a little primping – even senior shelter dogs. That’s why Mark Imhof, a former businessman, decided to give haircuts to older dogs with unkempt hair, in order to increase the likelihood that they would get adopted. When his fiancé saw how much joy Imhof got from interacting with animals, she encouraged him to opt out of getting another “soul-less job” and instead, give these pooches some amazing makeovers.

“Sean was my first shelter dog, and when they brought him to me, he was on the un-adoptable list because of behavior issues,” Imhof recalls. “Of course, I explain to people, if we were to mat your hair, and then ask you to do a job, you would probably have behavior issues, too.”

Now, Imhof visits Animal Care Center of NYC to give senior dogs a new ‘do.

We Wants to Give Senior Shelter Dogs a Forever Home. What He Does to Help Them? Wow!

Appearances matter when you want to make a good first impression. That’s true for humans as well as dogs, especially shelter dogs who are eagerly waiting for a kind human to come give them a forever home. And for senior shelter dogs, appearances are even more important; their age and often bedraggled look practically ensures a potential new Mom or Dad will walk right past them.

But one awesome human is doing his best to give these elderly furbabies the best possible chance of getting adopted. Mark Imhof is a professional dog groomer who spends his free time visiting animal shelters around New York. Here, he gives old dogs free baths and haircuts.
