Hurricane Patricia Destroys Shelters - Help Animals Now.
Help animal victims of Hurricane Patricia by providing food, emergency veterinary care, and by repairing housing.

Hurricane Patricia, the strongest hurricane in recorded history, made landfall in Mexico on October 23, 2015. Two animal shelters, Huellas Adopciones and Manchas A.C., were directly in its path. Both of these shelters have sustained heavy damage to their infrastructures and humane operations are heavily impacted. Without these shelters operating there is simply nowhere for stray and displaced animals to receive care, shelter and the hope of a permanent home.

GreaterGood.org is working with our partner on the ground, Friends of Mexican Animal Welfare (FOMAW), to rebuild shelters and provide care for animals affected. FOMAW stands by these impoverished shelters every day providing life-saving veterinary care and is standing by them during this terrible disaster. Together, we can ensure these animals are well taken care of, given the medical treatment they need, and kept in safe temporary shelter while we rebuild the two shelters that were destroyed.

You can help. 100% of your gift goes to help animal victims of Hurricane Patricia.

The mission of FOMAW is to facilitate and assist with Mexican animal welfare programs in order to reduce animal suffering and improve public health. These animal welfare programs include, but are not limited to; spay/neuter programs, veterinary and animal care education and shelter and adoption of rescued animals.

This Needs to Stop. 1,794 Protected Wild Horses Sent to Slaughter After Government Oversight.

The Interior Department Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently  released a report confirming that between 2009-2012 the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sold 1,794 federally-protected wild horses to a Colorado rancher and noted horse slaughter proponent, Tom Davis, who sold them to slaughter. The sale of the horses for slaughter violated BLM policy and a Congressional ban.

horse
The report reveals that the agency continued to sell horses to Davis even after receiving information that he was sending horses to slaughter. The employee who sold the horses to Davis received performance-based “monetary awards” based on the number of horses she sold or adopted out.

Despite these findings, the OIG does not hold any BLM officials accountable for wrongdoing.

“It took more than three years for the OIG to confirm what we’ve always known – that the BLM sold 1,795 federally-protected wild horses to a known kill buyer who sold them to slaughter,” said Suzanne Roy, Director of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC). “Unfortunately, there will be no justice for these mustangs, who suffered brutal deaths in Mexican slaughter plants.  No one at the BLM is being held accountable for this betrayal, and Tom Davis is not being prosecuted for violating his contractual obligation to not sell the horses for slaughter.”

Among the report’s key findings:

  • “BLM did not follow current law while managing wild horses and burros. BLM also failed to follow its own policy of limiting horse sales and ensuring that the horses sold went to good homes and were not slaughtered.”
  • Davis said that “in selling him so many loads of horses, BLM had to know that the horses would end up at a slaughterhouse.”
  • Taxpayers paid $140,000 to deliver truckloads of horses to Davis. Davis paid $10 a piece for the horses, or less than $18,000 total, and made as much as $154,000 by selling them for slaughter.
  • BLM employees never attempted to verify the information that Davis provided regarding his intentions for the horses, despite the unusually large number of horses being sold to him, and never stopped selling horses to Davis despite receiving information that Davis was sending horses to slaughter.
  • The “marketing specialist” who sold the horses to Davis received monetary awards and superior performance appraisals based in part on the number of horses she sold during the period she was selling horses to Davis.
  • This marketing specialist “said she never had any reason to doubt the information on Davis’ applications, even after he refused to tell her who he sold the horses to . . .”
  • The OIG declined to investigate alleged ties between Davis and former Secretary of Agriculture and fellow Coloradan, Ken Salazar.
horsesss
“The solution to wild horse management is not selling horses and burros for slaughter,” Roy concluded. “It’s time for BLM to stop rounding up wild horses and burros, stop stockpiling them in holding facilities and start managing them humanely on-the-range using the safe and effective PZP fertility control vaccine, as recommended by the National Academy of Sciences.”

The vast majority of Americans oppose horse slaughter and support protecting wild horses and burros on public lands in the West, so why this is allowed to continue is completely unknown.

You can take action to oppose this horrific practice by following American Wild Horse Preservation and adding your name to their petition calling on Congress to end the senseless slaughter of these American icons. Lead image source: Sam Gower/Flickr

Baby orangutan Gito receives love and care at IAR rescue centre.
Little Gito is showing good signs of recovery and is responding well to treatment. This video shows Gito after just one week in our centre - his skin is greatly improved, his eyes are less swollen and he is slightly more mobile.

There is a long way to go for poor Gito and it is still too early to say whether he has sustained any long term physical damage. Once Gito is stronger, our vets will be able to get a fuller picture of his condition.

Please donate what you can today, to help us care for Gito and so many other orphaned babies like him: www.internationalanimalrescue.org/gito.

Watching Rescued Deer Hop Around Their Sanctuary Home Will Make Your Day.

Once upon a time, the world was filled with deer, running free, everywhere you looked. However, with the spread of cities and roads and the demands of the ever increasing human population, all of that has changed. Nowadays, deer are considered pests because they run out into roads and get into gardens, causing property damage and accidents. Because of this, they are a prime target for hunters who kill countless animals every year. With all of these human threats, is there any place that is safe for a deer to just be?

The good people at Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary say yes. Located on 153 acres in Victoria Australia’s Macedon Mountains, they provide sanctuary for all kinds of animals to live out their days in peace.

Hopscotch, Bambi and Gemima are three lucky ladies (featured ever so joyfully in this video) who will never know the fear of being threatened by cars, hunters or any other form of harm again. The happy dance that they do while frolicking in their large pen only goes to show that deer, like every other animal on the planet including humans, feel love and deserve happiness.

Amazing Sheep Helps Rescue Frightened, Abandoned Ewe From Imminent Danger.

Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary is a farm animal sanctuary seated in the Macedon Mountains, in Victoria, Australia. These peaceful 153 acres provide a safe haven for 250 of Australia’s luckiest farm animals. In addition to providing a safe home for farm animals, Edgar’s Mission also carries out amazing rescues.
When the Edgar’s team got a call about a sheep that was abandoned on a property next to a busy road in Melbourne, they immediately jumped to her rescue. The poor little lady had been left behind at an abandoned property and had been on her own for five weeks. The trauma of this experience left the sheep too nervous to let anyone near her.
Luckily, the folks at Edgar’s were smart enough to bring one of their resident sheep along to help. Timmy the sheep is quite a handsome fellow, with a sweet and calm disposition. Recognizing one of her own kind right away, the shy little ewe warmed right up to him and allowed the team to lead her into the rescue vehicle.
The kind folks at the sanctuary have named her Tina, and she can now look forward to a life without fear as she is allowed to live out her life in peace and dignity.
The thought-provoking mission statement of this amazing rescue pretty much says it all. “If we could live happy healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn’t we?” If you would like to find out more about this organization or to donate, visit their website by clicking here.
5 Lions Rescued From Defunct Zoo Find Sanctuary in New African Home.
Although the plight of wild animals living in zoos is always sad, what happens when zoo’ have too many animals or close down is even worse. Unfortunately, when zoos are no longer motivated to care for animals because they won’t provide them with a profit, many end up being euthanized or simply left to starve.
Thankfully, this was not the fate for the five lions in this video. After the zoo where they were living in Romania shut down, the veterinarian who had been tasked with caring for the lions refused to let the animals be put down. He was able to get in touch with the good people atFour Paws International, a rescue group dedicated to helping formerly abused wild animals. This amazing organization was able to secure a spot for all five of the lions at Lionsrock in South Africa, a big cat sanctuary which provides a permanent home for animals rescued from zoos and circuses.
Transporting lions across two continents is never an easy thing, but the look on their faces when they step out onto African soil for the first time is priceless. Thanks to the amazingly dedicated crews at Four Paws International and Lionsrock, they will be able to enjoy space and freedom for the rest of their lives.

Saved From a Dog Fighting Ring, Cadence the Pit Bull Gets a Second Chance at Life.
When Hope for Paws received a call about an injured Pit Bull outside of Los Angeles, they immediately set out to help. Known for their incredible ability to transform formerly abused dogs into loving, exuberant animals, Hope for Paws was certainly the right rescue to call.
Rescuers arrived at the scene to find a female Pit Bull, covered in scrapes and wounds, cowering in an alley. Unlike other dogs that the Hope for Paws team has encountered, she did not run from rescuers but seemed absolutely desperate for their help.
Naming her Cadence, the team was able to get her into their rescue van and back to their vet facility in no time. It didn’t take long for them to judge from her injuries that Cadence had been used as a bait dog in a fighting ring. Bait dogs are often smaller, more docile dogs who are used to train fighting dogs to attack and kill. If Hope for Paws had not stepped in to rescue her, there is no doubt that this sweet dog would not have survived.
Thankfully, Cadence can put these horrific days behind her and start a new life. This happyPittie is now being cared for by a foster family and is on the look out for a forever family! To learn more about adopting Cadence, click here.
WHAT?! Kind Woman Rescues Neglected Dog … and Then is Arrested for Theft? While there is an enormous stray dog issue in the U.S., it is especially pertinent in the state of Texas. In Houston alone, there are an estimated 1.5 million stray dogs roaming the streets. Some of these animals were born into feral colonies while others are abandoned pets who have been forced to live on their own. However, all of these dogs share the common need for a warm bed and a good source of food and love.

Many kind people are stepping up for these homeless dogs and saving them from the streets, either by taking them into rescue shelters or making them members of their own families. Shelby Corker is one such kind person.

When Shelby found an underweight dog wandering the streets of Ft. Worth, TX, her heart immediately went out to her. With no tag, collar or microchip, the pup appeared to have never known the love of a family.
RtCjjQ1
Shelby immediately took the poor animal to the vet, where it was discovered that the dog was suffering from malnutrition, yeast infections in both ears, a polyp over her eye and a skin infection caused by a flea infestation. It was clear that she had been neglected for quite some time.  After writing a report, the vet staff took the dog to the Ft. Worth Animal Control Center to recover.

Shortly afterwards, Shelby was contacted by a stranger who claimed to be the dog’s owner, however, she wasn’t convinced and refused to tell them where the pup had gone. Unfortunately, this person then filed a report with the police claiming Shelby had stolen their dog. Regardless of the letter from a vet that detailed the state of the dog’s condition, the police department refused to believe this person had abused the dog and stepped in to reclaim the animal from Shelby.

On October 22, 2015, five police officers arrested Shelby Corker for trying to help a dog and handed the animal back to its neglectful owner!

Not only is this a gross act of injustice against the woman who had stepped in to rescue the ailing dog, but it means that the cruel human who had let the pup get into such a horrific state is now in custody of this innocent pup once again.

Shelby is currently being represented by Joshua Graham and Associates, PLLC, who had the following to say about the case: “Of all the bad people that we could be spending our efforts on, its a shame that so much went into taking down a little girl trying to save a puppy. Shameful.”

There has been an enormous outpouring of support for Shelby across social media with people using #StandWithShelby.  If you would like to learn more or support Shelby Corker, click here.

Dorothy: a Scared Senior Dog Bites Her Rescuer But Then Makes an Incredible Transformation.
Dorothy: a Scared Senior Dog Bites Her Rescuer But Then Makes an In...

2 Dogs Rescued From the Meat Trade Learn to Love and Trust Again. You Won’t Believe Their Transformation.

Kaya and Robin are two lucky dogs who were rescued by the Humane Society International (HSI). Victims of South Korea’s brutal dog meat industry, these two pretty pups were being raised for meat. When the HSI came in and rescued them from their tiny, crowded cages, it should have been the happiest day of their lives, but having been raised around cruel humans, these poor little ladies were terrified!

HSI wanted to give these pups a better life by adopting them into a forever home, however, it was clear that these dogs would need a lot of rehabilitation before this could happen. That’s when they contacted the experienced doggie experts at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center.

The ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center located in Madison, New Jersey at the St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare center, specializes in rehabilitating dogs with severe behavioral issues. Upon intake, they realized that these two were particularly special cases because of the way they cowered, trembled, and peed whenever a human came near them. But the staff did not give up.

Using outdoor play, they were finally able to break through the dogs deep fears and get them to relax and enjoy human company. Kaya, the more skittish of the two, is even giving kisses now while Robin was lucky enough to have been adopted in August.

The wonderful transformation of these two dogs would not have been possible without the committed rescue effort of several international animal welfare organizations who are saving and changing lives every day. If you would like to donate to The Humane Society International or the ASPCA, please click on their names for a link to their websites.

Meet the Amazing Cat Who Adopted a Senior Living Community.

Nursing homes do everything they can to create a relaxing and welcoming environment for their residents. In fact, the environment is so relaxing and so welcoming that it’s very likely for them to attract more than just the elderly!

Mr. Pickles was an outdoor cat before he became a permanent member of the Bayview Retirement community. He’d often stop by the home for free treats and to sleep by the fireplace as his previous guardian was in and out of the hospital so much that he could no longer care for Mr. Pickles.

Once Mr. Pickles previous caretaker got wind of where his cat was going, he knew that Bayview was the right place for him. Since then, Mr. Pickles has earned his place as the self-appointed hospitality specialist and greeter at the Bayview Retirement Community. He keeps the residents company and uses his dashing good looks to keep everyone entertained and upbeat.

This kitty is way more than just a mascot, though, at five minutes in, a resident displays one of the many times Mr. Pickles has pulled his own weight and helped out with chores!

While there is no doubt that this particular kitty is special, animals who take on therapeutic roles in retirement homes like Mr. Pickles aren’t uncommon. Having a four-legged friend around does wonders for the physical and mental well-being of residents. At Bayview, there is no question that the residents love Mr. Pickles and it’s pretty obvious that he loves them back. What more can you ask for?

Homeless Paralyzed Dog Lost Her Wheelchair to Cruel Humans, But Ended Up Gaining a Home. While it is heartbreaking to hear stories of animal cruelty and neglect, the flipside of the equation (when kind people step in to save animals) can’t help but make a Green Monster cheer!

An example of this occurred recently when Martin and Eugeniya O’Regan–Pevchikh, two avid animal lovers in Ireland, were so moved by the plight of a desperately ill dog in Lima, Peru, that they set up a YouCaring fundraising page to help cover the costs of her care. The couple – who run a free pet minding service called Mind My Pet in Ireland – first heard of the dog, Chiquita, via a Facebook video that had been shared by a friend. The fifteen-second-clip showed, in harrowing detail, just how ill Chiquita was.

Both of her back legs were paralyzed. It was known that she had once had a little wheelchair that enabled her to move around, but this had sadly been stolen from her. After her rescue on September 17th, by an animal welfare group in Lima, a medical examination revealed that she was also suffering from mange, ehrilchiosis (canine typhus), anemia, mange, a painful ear condition, and a suspected tumor.

Martin and Eugeniya explained that the video of Chiquita “struck a chord. This little girl, thousands of miles away from us, needed help. It would have been easy to simply click ‘like’ and move on, but she needed more than a ‘like.’ She needed help.”

The pictures below, taken by Chiquita’s rescuers, show just how badly she needed that help.

Cruel People Stole This Disabled Dog's Wheelchair, But Now She's on the Way to Her New Forever Home in the U.S!
When Martin and Eugeniya originally set up the YouCaring page on September 20th, Chiquita had outstanding medical bills of $200. She had been offered a forever home in Rhode Island, so her transportation costs also needed to be addressed. The couple said, “Chiquita is at the vet clinic ‘Charterhouse’ in Lima, Peru, under the care of veterinarian Tito Bezada Chavez. There are dedicated, selfless people on the ground here in Lima, animal welfare activists, who are dealing with the day to day issues. They do not speak English, they are having a really hard time raising funds and are very limited in their knowledge of English language platforms such as YouCaring.”

However, the good news is that the YouCaring campaign has now met with success! With over fifty days to go until the appeal ends, it has already raised $1,078 – more than the required amount for Chiquita’s treatment and transportation to her new home.

Cruel People Stole This Disabled Dog's Wheelchair, But Now She's on the Way to Her New Forever Home in the U.S!
The excess funds are now being used to help other homeless dogs in Lima. Martin and Eugenia declared their intentions to donors on the YouCaring page: “Folks, we were now thinking of using the raining funds wisely. We were thinking, if it was okay with donors, of dispersing the remaining funds for homeless dogs who need veterinary care, whether it’s sterilization or more serious issues such as an urgent operation or a stabbing (yes, sadly this happens in Lima). … We think that using the remaining funds to help other dogs in Peru, dogs who haven’t been as lucky as Chiquita in finding a loving home and veterinary care when needed, is the decent thing to do.”

If you would like to contribute to the appeal, you can do so here. Let’s hope that sweet Chiquita makes a full and sustained recovery, and will get to enjoy many days of peace, love, and kindness in her new home! All image source: YouCaring

9 Extremely Matted Poodles Finally Get the Care They Deserve Thanks to Rescuers. Matt Southcott spotted what he thought was a pile of rags on the side of the road and didn’t think much of it. However, he soon realized that the pile wasn’t made of rags at all, but rather was a group of extremely matted dogs. There were nine dogs, who were later identified as poodles, in total who had been dumped in a ditch near Winchester in Hampshire County, UK.

“I couldn’t tell if they were sheep or dogs. You couldn’t see their faces,” he said to The Daily Mail. “They looked so badly matted and injured. I have never seen an animal in that state.”

The group was made up of a mother, named Sian, and her eight puppies who vets estimate are around one year old. While the guardian of these abandoned dogs has not been identified, it is clear that these pups have been given very little care. Poodles have extremely curly hair that is prone to matting if it is not kept short or properly groomed.

Each poodle was given a long grooming. It took over three hours to shave each dog and poor Sian had to be sedated to undergo the process.

“She had stones trapped between her paw pads which had obviously been there for some time. It is disgusting. I have never seen a dog in this condition before,” said rescuer, Martha Edward.

After all the matted hair was removed, it was clear that the dogs were extremely underweight and malnourished.

Animal welfare experts believe that that dogs had been kept in “unlivable” conditions for their entire lives before being abandoned. This allowed them to reach the horrific state they were in. Thankfully an investigation to find the person who did this to these animals in underway. The RSPCA are asking for help in finding the person responsible.

When Matt Southcott first saw the dogs, he thought they were piles of rags.

Woman Meets a Starving Stray Cat While on Vacation and Changes His Life Forever. As animal lovers, it can be near impossible to resist going out of our way to help an animal in need. Whether that means rescuing a lost dog and doing whatever it take to find their home, or alerting wildlife rehabilitators to a baby squirrel that has lost its mother, there is no task to great or small when it comes to lending a hand. Sometimes, this even means helping animals while out on vacation – just take a look at this story from Imgur user spicyadhesive who did something incredible for a stray cat she met while on vacation in Cyprus.

On the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which was already home to a large number of stray animals, the number of abandoned dogs and cats has nearly doubled since the recent financial crisis. Although it is still a nice place to vacation, this woman was absolutely unable to turn a blind eye to the plight of these suffering strays.

She spotted a skinny orange cat hiding among the dumpsters, her heart went out to him.

A BABY giraffe and an infant elephant have become best friends after being rescued by a wildlife charity. Filmed in October, this heart warming footage shows Kiko, a one month old rescued giraffe, playing with fellow orphan Loboito – a boisterous three week old elephant calf. The pair are being cared for at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Orphanage in Nairobi National Park. Kiko, who was found abandoned in Kenya's Meru National Park, sleeps with the baby elephants as he is too small to sleep in the giraffe stable.

She Found a Frail, Mangy Kitten and Fell in Love. When You See the Photos, You’ll Know Why.

Some people just don’t understand cats, they are dog people, through and through. It turns out though, that this can be easily changed by the adorable nature of a kitten. Wolfgang, the kitten, was in rough shape when his new mom saw him for the first time. He was desperately looking for someone to care for him and his infected eyes and flea-infested fluff were far from adorable.

“It looked like it was missing an eye. Greenish discharge all around its nose and mouth had matted its fur, sealing one of its eyes shut,” writes Wolfgang’s mom on Imgur.

But despite this, she did what any awesome animal lover would do; she took him home. Though “not a cat person,” this amazing woman got the sickly kitten cleaned up, flea-free and fed for the night. She set up a cozy bed and a litter box for the lucky little man and the next morning Wolfgang was taken to the vet. There he received all the medication he would need to clear up his eye and respiratory infections.

Then it was off to the animal shelter for this little cat … or so his new mom thought. After a trip to the shelter, she found out that they were at maximum capacity and there was a chance that Wolfgang would be put to sleep. Seeing as the little kitten was already winning over his rescuer’s heart, she decided there was no way she could leave him to this fate.

“So it was decided. I’d found him that Tuesday and by Friday I was super in love with this little guy,” she writes.

Today, Wolfgang and his mom love snuggling and listening to music together and he has officially converted her to a full-on cat lover.

When Imgur user, ToughTootinBabyThatCanDanceLikeAMan, found Wolfgang, she gasped at the sight of this little kitten.

Dangerous Treetop Rescue
After showing the dramatic (and nude) rescue of a trapped heron, by risky/risqué rescuer Johnny Porch, we wanted to post a video from earlier this year. When he offered his skills during the recovery of a fallen kestrel. A baby kestrel had fallen or perhaps fluttered from it's tree top home, and required delivering back into the nest. Simple enough? Yes, unfortunately, the nest was located right at the top of an enormous tree. Simon didn't fancy potential injury; so had to call in some specialist help. Enter Johnny Porch. Even for Johnny, a highly trained climber, this was clearly a difficult and dangerous challenge. It required all of his expertise to haul himself up this tree and safely deliver the bird back to his parents. Lucy could barely watch as she watched Johnny swing from branch to branch. However, despite her concern, Johnny was able to successfully reunite this kestrel with it's nest.

Jon Stewart's beautiful 12-acre farm is now a safe haven for abused animals. Anna and Maybelle are living in a pig's paradise.
They feast on green grass. They sunbathe on 12 acres of pristine pasture. And they get belly rubs...
...from Jon Stewart and his wife, Tracey. Every. Single. Day.
Anna and Maybelle are just two of about a dozen other animals living in the lap of luxury on the Stewarts' farm 50 miles outside of New York City, "CBS This Morning" reported.

The former "Daily Show" host and his wife, who is an author and animal advocate, have run Bufflehead Farm in New Jersey since 2013, according to The New York Times. Along with Anna and Maybelle, they care for four dogs, three rabbits, two guinea pigs, two fish, and a bird.

And while that might seem like a full house (er, yard), the Stewarts are just getting started.

Jon and Tracey's large, furry family is about to get even bigger.
On Oct. 24, 2015, the couple announced that their property will officially become a Farm Sanctuary.

Farm Sanctuary, an advocacy group that fights the factory farm industry and cares for abused animals, has three other animal safe havens in the U.S.; the Stewarts' New Jersey property will be its fourth.

Soon cows, sheep, chicken, goats, turkeys, and (of course) more pigs will be arriving at Bufflehead Farm.

Tracey, who has a newly released animal welfare book called "Do Unto Animals," announced the big news at the nonprofit's gala in New York City this past weekend.

"We're getting married!" she told the crowd, according to a press release. "Farm Sanctuary and us, we're getting married."

"We bought a farm in New Jersey with the intention of starting a farm sanctuary of our own with an educational center, but what I'm announcing tonight is that our farm is actually going to be the New Jersey branch of Farm Sanctuary. We're going to build new advocates, new curious learners, and new leaders for this very important movement." — Tracey Stewart
Caring for rescued animals is quite the 180 from Jon's previous day job as host of "The Daily Show."
But for Jon — who called himself his wife's "wingman" during this next chapter and who has quietly eased into eating a vegetarian diet — farm life doesn't seem so bad ... although he joked about missing the perks of TV stardom during his recent Emmy speech.

"To everybody on television, I just want to tell you — cling to it!" he joked on stage last month after "The Daily Show" won Best Variety Talk Series at the award show.

This magical button delivers Upworthy stories to you on Facebook:

"I have been off of television for six weeks, seven weeks, whatever it is. This is the first applause I've heard. It is a barren wasteland out there." He told the Emmy's audience. "You get used to craft services. Out in the world, there are tables with food — but you can't take it. It costs money, and very little of it is gluten free or vegan."

The comedian, however, seems perfectly at peace — in hog heaven, if you will — right where he is.
Although pig masseur and late night host may seem dramatically different, it appears that Jon is still doing what he does best in retirement: helping give a voice to the people — and animals — that deserve to be heard.

Check out the story from "CBS This Morning" on Jon and Tracey's big news below:
A Peek Into the Incredible Organization That Helps Senior Dogs Find Permanent Foster Homes. Thanks to the Mr. Mo Project, old shelter dogs are given the chance to spend their last years in loving foster homes. With the program financially covering food and medical bills, all foster families have to do is open their doors and hearts to an old dog in need.

Indeed, with many adopters put off by the cost of rehoming an elderly dog, the Mr. Mo Project gives senior pups the chance to find a permanent home without the fosters having to worry about the dog costing more than they can afford.

To date, the non-profit has helped more than 70 dogs live out their senior years in permanent homes. Most of these dogs are elderly and sometimes ill and come from various shelters and animal rescues across the United States — places from which they are unlikely to be adopted because of their advanced age and thus where they face a high risk of euthanasia. The program thus saves them from either spending their last years in a shelter or being destroyed for lack of space.

It All Began With One Inspirational Elder-Bull

The Mr. Mo Project was started over a year ago by Mariesa and Chris Hughes and owes its name to the first senior dog the couple rescued, Moses the Pit Bull, whom they adopted in 2012. Unfortunately, Moses was subsequently diagnosed with a severe and inoperable tumor on his spinal cord and passed away two years later. The Hughes decided to honor their late pet by helping other elderly dogs be placed into loving homes.
Mariesa and Moses
Having faced the cost of caring for an elderly dog first-hand, they realized why most adopters are deterred from the prospect of taking home a shelter senior. They recognized that many families who would otherwise be thrilled to provide a loving home to an older pet were often unable to meet the medical cost of caring for one with health issues.

With this in mind, Mariesa and Chris decided to start an organization that would fundraise to cover senior pets’ medical bills, while placing them in permanent foster homes.

“The Mr. Mo Project aims to give these senior dogs a chance to have a life again and a home” they say in a video detailing how their project started.

“Removing that financial hurdle allows care and compassion to take center stage,” explains Mariesa. “Plus, if we’re able to help a senior dog remain in a familiar home environment before an owner resorts to surrender, all the better. We keep yet another dog out of a shelter system that’s already overflowing.”

Chris & Mariesa Hughes
A True Dedication to Dogs in Need
When alerted by a shelter volunteer or staff member of homeless seniors in need, the Hughes often drive from their home in upstate New York to collect the dogs and take them personally to their permanent foster homes.

One grateful testimony relates the Hughes’ ongoing help with Walter — one of the senior pups fostered through the program — when he had to undergo emergency cancer treatment. The couple not only drove Walter down to Florida to place him with his foster Janice Markey, but also covered his medical expenses through donations made to the non-profit, and then personally took him to Cornell Veterinary Hospital to be treated by an emergency oncologist.

Aiding the Mr. Mo Project to carry out their life-saving work is a whole network of committed helpers and sponsors. From transportation service Kindred Hearts Transport Connection and commercial sponsor BarkBox, to generous individuals who donate to the project, the Hughes value the support they are given in their endeavor to help old dogs in need.

The VCA Animal Health Center in Clifton Park, New York, is Chris and Mariesa’s go to veterinary resource. One of the vets who works there, Dr. Andrew Hagner, addresses the common perception that senior dogs automatically present obvious or latent health issues that are expensive or difficult to handle: “In many instances a senior dog’s health issues are fairly easy to diagnose and straightforward to treat,” stating that most common disorders ailing older pets — such as arthritis, dry eyes, allergies or hypothyroidism — are often treatable with relatively cheap medicine as opposed to major surgery.

Of course, the foster families themselves play a huge role in ensuring these dogs have a place to live out their golden years. Take 15-year-old senior dog Dakota, pulled in extremis from a high-kill North Carolina shelter by the non-profit, despite suffering from cancer and being given only a few months to live. Thanks the Mr. Mo Project, Dakota gets to live out his remaining days with a family devoted to making them as enjoyable as possible for him. They have even crafted an adventure-filled “bucket list” for the old guy, the progress of which can be followed on Facebook. Dakota has since become a TV star — look no further than the old pup’s grateful tail-wagging at the end of the video to epitomize how rewarding saving a senior dog can be.

One particular story proves that it’s not only canines who benefit from the Mr. Mo Project’s fantastic work, the program helps people too.

Vicky Neville is one such woman whose sweet Pit Bull Macy, whom she met thanks to the Mr. Mo Project, helped her overcome the loss of her sister and the depression caused by a painful divorce. “I really believe that Macy saved me,” says Vicky, “she just makes me feel happy, which I never thought I’d feel again.”

The Perks of Adopting a Senior Dog

“It’s pretty amazing what a dog can do for someone,” says Chris. “And senior dogs, in particular, have so much love to give. They just need the right person who’s willing to share it.”

Indeed, adopting a senior pet has countless advantages. Sure, puppies are cute and fluffy, but they’re also a lot of work. Older dogs are calmer, quieter and already housetrained. They require a lot less energy and are often wise and loyal companions.

With older pets being the most difficult to rehome, you’d also be saving a life by keeping an old dog from being euthanized or living out his or her last days in a shelter.

How You Can Help
Chris and Mariesa are always searching for foster families to provide the indispensable love and nurturing senior dogs need in their last few years. If you can, why not apply online to foster a Mr. Mo dog?

Funds raised to cover the dogs’ medical bills and food come from donations alone and help ensure these dogs can be placed in loving homes. All generous contributions from the public or businesses go directly to the dogs’ lifelong food and vet fund. As such, the Mr. Mo Project is always in need of donations.

You can also donate to each of the dogs’ individual amazon wishlists by choosing the “dogs with a wishlist” tab.

Finally, consider adopting an older dog from a shelter, for, as they say, “They might be a little older, but they love just the same.” All images source: Mr. Mo Project / Facebook

A True Animal Hero Who Knows How Use Social Media! Ricky Gervais Saves Dogs By Just Tweeting. Ricky Gervais is an outspoken animal lover. In the past, he has taken up campaigns against the dog meat trade, trophy hunters and in support of animals in general. “Animals don’t have a voice. But I do. A loud one. I’m a f***ing big mouth. My voice is for them. And I’ll never shut up while they suffer.” he has said about defending the rights of our animal friends.

So, when the actor heard about an animal shelter in Odai, Romania that was getting overrun with 650 sick dogs, he knew that had to use his highly public voice to help.

Many of the dogs were emaciated, with skin problems and internal parasites.

With 650 dogs to feed, the shelter did not have enough food, water bowls or bedding to go around.

With no other hope for funding, the shelter reached out to the UK based group K-9 Angels for help. Together they were able to raise a few thousand dollars, but nowhere near the 30,000 they needed to get the dog the food and medical attention that they needed. When the actor heard about their terrible plight, he spoke out about it to raise awareness, tweeting “OK. That’s The Emmys done. Now back to important stuff. Emergency food & aid for dogs at Odai public shelter, https://www.youcaring.com/the-dogs-of-odai-434412#.VgAqpKXS5_4.twitter … pls RT”  Within hours, the donations started pouring in, bring the group total just shy of the $30,000 goal!

K-9 Angels founder Victoria Eisermann explained in an e-mail, “To say the fundraising was successful is an understatement. We have so far raised £18,909. Before Ricky retweeted, we had only raised £4,000 so it just goes to show the power that animal-loving celebs have. We are very grateful. We have now spent over £6,000 on aid including food, beds as they where all sleeping on cold, wet stone floors, bowls as where eating from the floor and sanitizer to clean the shelter. We have also set up a regular food order and [are] looking into funding a worker at the shelter as they are very short staffed.”

Thanks to the help of one concerned actor, these dogs will now be able to get the help and attention that they need.

And, certainly, this one victory for animals is hardly where Gervais plans to end his crusade to protect animals. After this amazing success with one single tweet – in addition to many other kind acts – Gervais was presented with the Daily Mirror’s Animal Hero Award.

In response to this amazing honor, Ricky said, “There are people that really do stuff and go out there and risk their lives and stuff. I do feel this is a tweeting award. But it must have taken months and years to get 100 signatures before [Twitter], standing outside Tesco. But now it can take a few hours. It’s easily the best thing about social media. That .. and pictures of me in the bath.”

ricky
The fact is that no matter how Gervais spreads the message about his passion for protecting animals (although we must say, we appreciate and enjoy the hilarious pics), he is an incredible place to bring awareness to many issues and dire situations that would otherwise be overlooked. A Tweet can go a long way in making the world a better place for animals, and we look forward to many, many more from @RickyGervais.

Foster Family Takes in Pit Bull With Cancer and Makes His Last Days the Best Ever. This handsome fella is named King. He is having the time of his life right now, sadly, because these are his last days.

pit bull in car
Poor king was born in the city of Miami, where being a Pit Bull is against the law due to Breed Specific Legislation that was passed in the 90s. He had his ears cut at an early age, which must have been very painful for him, and was dumped at a Miami animal shelter, where all Pit Bulls are put to sleep.  Since “Pit Bull” is not an official breed, this law applies to all dogs labeled as pit bulls, including many mixed breed dogs, puppies, elderly dogs and beloved family pets.

So when sweet King arrived at a Miami area animal shelter, they acted fast, adopting him out to a family in nearby Ft. Lauderdale. It looked like little King had found his forever home, until the people brought him back, saying that he was behaving strangely and that he wasn’t getting along with their other dog. This time the staff also noticed that he was limping, so they contacted Passion 4 Pits, a Pit Bull rescue based in St Petersburg, Florida. Working together, they were able to get King out of the shelter and into The Blue Pearl Veterinary Practice, where he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The tumor, which is wrapped around his spinal cord is inoperable and has not responded to other types of treatment. As it progresses, King has lost his ability to walk, but this hasn’t held this guy back for a minute! Looking fit in his new wheelchair, King is now able to enjoy the great outdoors!

The doctors have estimated that poor King has about a month to live. So his new foster family has written a bucket list for him, to make his last days amazing. Starting with a big scoop of ice cream!

He is also having fun meeting lots of new friends.

King’s new mom has also planned a trip to the beach, a boat ride, a Pro Pit rally in Ft. Lauderdale as well as lots of puppy play dates and treats. It must be hard to adopt an animal, knowing that he will not be with you for very long. But by showering him with all that a pup could wish for, he will take the best memories with him to the rainbow bridge, which is really the best that any of us can hope for.

None of this would be possible without the dedicated people at Passion 4 Pits. Click here to learn more or make a donation to help them save more deserving pups like King. All image source:King’s Bucket List/Facebook

A Look Inside The Belitsa Sanctuary, Bugaria’s Refuge for Ex Dancing Bears. Until 1993, when Bulgaria made the use of bears for entertainment illegal, bear cubs were routinely captured from the wild and torn away from their mothers to be made into “dancing bears.” All for the sake of tradition and human entertainment, these young and frightened bears would be forced to stand on glowing hot iron plates or coal until they’d automatically raise their feet in order to escape the excruciating pain – and this little scene of misery qualified as “dancing,” a spectacle that many bear trainers would use to turn a profit. To further control the bears, trainers would pierce their snouts with giant rings and tie a rope to them. Anytime the bear would move without the permission of their trainer, they would instantly be shocked with pain.

Fortunately, given the extreme cruelty of this practice, the government sanctioned a ban and all of the dancing bears were effectively retired in Bulgaria. This meant that many bears were rejected by their former owners and left without anywhere to go if they were no longer profitable. Thankfully, many compassionate and caring individuals stepped up to help these bears in need and give them the life they always deserved – one filled with respect, happiness, and freedom.

800px-Dancing_bear_in_Bulgaria_about_1970_1
In 2000, the animal welfare organization Four Paws founded The Belitsa Bear Sanctuary to provide refuge for the former dancing bears who needed help and a home. Located near the town of Belitsa in South West Bulgaria, the Belitsa Bear Sanctuary is home to 27 rescued dancing bears. Covering over 120,000 square meters, it’s one of the largest Four Paws’ bear sanctuaries of its kind in Europe. Plus, it’s supported by the Foundation of Brigitte Bardot.

Today the sanctuary is a popular tourist attraction in the country, offering people a rare glimpse of rescued bears in their natural habitat of lush green woods – something you don’t get at your average zoo. It’s also pretty high maintenance, though completely worth every bit of time and effort.

“Taking care of the bears includes many things – feeding them three times a day, preparing dens for the ones that cannot do it for themselves, cleaning the pools, providing medical care and much more,” a representative from the sanctuary tells One Green Planet.

All the bears at this sanctuary are now living happy, healthy and natural lives thanks to this incredible organization and the amazing people behind it. Most of the bears here have had traumatic pasts and for many, the scars are permanent. Let us introduce you to Lady M, one of the bears living at the park.

Lady M
Although the ban on using bears for entertainment was established in the early nineties, it took until 2007 for all dancing bears to rescued. Lady M was one of the last renaming three.

This former dancing bear arrived at the Belitsa Bear Sanctuary in a less than comforting state, several years ago. Blind from years of malnutrition and missing an ear, likely as a result of abuse, she looked far from the stereotypical bear we image seeing in the wild. Nonetheless, she didn’t let her handicaps stop her from doing normal bear things like digging, for instance.

Until she arrived at the sanctuary, Lady M had never hibernated, as bears do, due to her unnatural circumstances. However, once she was given the freedom to, she started to exhibit many natural behaviors typical of bears. It’s as if throughout all the pain and suffering she experienced, she never forgot what it was like to be a wild bear.

Lady M 1
Today, Lady M is a happy and healthy bear, partial to a little sunbathing and an occasional dip in the pool. What more could a bear want?

How Can You Help?

It is truly incredible that a place like this sanctuary exists for the sake of all the former victims of the dancing bear trade. The sanctuary currently offers tours to help fund the incredible work they are doing, but providing lifelong care for their residents is no small order. You can help this organization keep their bears in toys and treats by making a contribution, here.  You can also follow their work and updates by liking their Facebook page. Image source: Bin Im Garten

Happy Birthday Rob!

In Defense of Animals
Rob came to live at IDA-Africa's Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in 2004 when he was two years old. We estimate his birth was in October of 2002, making this month the year he turns 13!

After a poacher had slaughtered his family and taken him captive, field workers with the World Wildlife Fund found him in a village in Eastern Cameroon and brought him to safety at the Center.

Today, as a large chimpanzee with a gentle nature and strong diplomatic skills, Rob is the alpha male of his group of six. He and Massamba have been rivals for dominance for some time, but the other chimpanzees in their group must have recognized Rob's potential as a strong and fair leader, because he's won their support. They share a lushly forested 3.5 acre enclosure.
