Real progress for NYC's animals

I've got two pieces of exciting news to share with you.

First, on Friday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city's animal shelter system, Animal Care and Control of NYC, will receive $8 million to build a new adoption center in Manhattan, upgrade the Brooklyn animal shelter and double the fleet of mobile adoption vans.

Second, yesterday, the Mayor's office announced the historic appointment of a special advisor for all animal protection issues. This is the first time in history that any NYC Mayor has done this.

This is amazing news for New York City's animals.  Not only will our city's animal shelters have more resources to grow, but there'll be someone from our community working in City Hall in charge of watching out for them. Let Mayor de Blasio know we're grateful!

The new Manhattan adoption center means more space -- so that the 30,000 dogs, cats and rabbits the shelters take in will get adopted. And new mobile adoption vans will be dedicated to the Bronx and Queens so that prospective adopters can be reached right in their own neighborhoods. That's going to make a huge difference for the thousands of homeless pets who otherwise might not have the chance to find a loving furever home family.

These new resources mean that the Brooklyn shelter will be getting a new heating, air conditioning and ventilation system that will reduce the spread of diseases and keep animals more comfortable. That's all around great news.

The Mayor also has a new advisor for animal issues, Jeff Dupee. He comes from Farm Sanctuary and he'll be tasked with working with animal advocacy groups, rescues and the animal protection community to pass laws to protect animals. Having a single point person for animal issues in the Mayor's office was a key part of our platform, and Mayor de Blasio has listened.

And it's because of you.

In 2013, so many of you were involved in electing our now-Mayor, Bill de Blasio. You knocked on doors, made calls, went to rallies, and made a difference to elect a mayor who cared about animals. Our platform included ensuring that Animal Care & Control has the resources they need to succeed, and appointing someone to coordinate how city government advocates for all animals. We're on the road to continue winning victories for horses and all animals in New York City.

Let's thank Mayor de Blasio, but remember: you played a crucial role in these victories.
