A few weeks ago, news broke that a Colorado "sanctuary" made the terrible and tragic decision to kill all 11 of its residents — five bears, three lions, and three tigers. Those 11 living beings were killed for convenience, and we will not stand for it.

As soon as we heard the news about Lion's Gate Sanctuary, our team of expert animal law attorneys got to work and reached out to offer assistance to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in its investigation of whether the animals' deaths violated the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and reached out to local law enforcement offering assistance with state and local criminal charges.

Lion's Gate Sanctuary had asked for county permission to relocate to a less flood‑prone area, but when the county denied the request, the sanctuary killed the animals without any apparent attempt to rehome them. Reputable sanctuaries have since stated they would have accepted the animals. These animals were betrayed — by the "sanctuary" and by our laws and attitudes that treat animals as property instead of the living, feeling beings they are.

Pony Forced to Give Rides With Painful Overgrown Hooves at Kelly Miller Circus

A visitor spotted this agitated pony, Miley, saddled up and chained to a hot walker at the Kelly Miller Circus in Clinton, Indiana. Her hooves were extremely overgrown, and authorities determined that she had "founder," a very painful condition in which inflammation of the tissue causes the bone to separate from the hoof and begins to rotate and sink into the sole of the hoof. Miley was finally removed from pony rides after PETA stepped in and contacted authorities.

NYU student gets 45-day jail sentence for brutal slaughter of Hawaiian birds

A 19-year-old student has been sentenced jail time following his involvement in the brutal slaughter of a protected albatross population nearly two years ago.

On December 27, 2015 on a camping trip, Christian Gutierrez and two other Punahou School students hiked to Ka‘ena Point Natural Area Reserve, carrying a machete, a bat, and a pellet gun. They were heading to a Laysan albatross colony, which has long been protected by the federal government as part of a 26-year conservation effort.

Using their weapons, the teens beat 15 of the birds to death, destroyed 17 of their nests, and smashed 11 of their eggs. Adding to the depravity of the killings, the teens were also accused of cutting the feet off many of the birds so they could retrieve I.D. bands for souvenirs. Those birds were then tied together, and thrown over a cliff into the ocean. This feathered massacre is expected to set conservation efforts back by a decade.

Two emotional support dogs are recovering from serious injuries after an officer shot them in their backyard, claiming they came charging at him. A video surveillance tape, posted by the dogs’ owner that night, appears to tell a different story.

An abandoned dog who broke the internet’s heart when he cried like a baby has been spared the euthanization needle.
