Animal Welfare report: Lion's Gate Sanctuary, Animal Legal Defense Fund, PETA, Sky With 'Blood' Protest, more...

A few weeks ago, news broke that a Colorado "sanctuary" made the terrible and tragic decision to kill all 11 of its residents — five bears, three lions, and three tigers. Those 11 living beings were killed for convenience, and we will not stand for it.

As soon as we heard the news about Lion's Gate Sanctuary, our team of expert animal law attorneys got to work and reached out to offer assistance to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in its investigation of whether the animals' deaths violated the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and reached out to local law enforcement offering assistance with state and local criminal charges.

Lion's Gate Sanctuary had asked for county permission to relocate to a less flood‑prone area, but when the county denied the request, the sanctuary killed the animals without any apparent attempt to rehome them. Reputable sanctuaries have since stated they would have accepted the animals. These animals were betrayed — by the "sanctuary" and by our laws and attitudes that treat animals as property instead of the living, feeling beings they are.

Like you, the Animal Legal Defense Fund believes animals' lives deserve recognition and protection by law. We need laws that clearly guarantee animals the protections they deserve, and we need them to be enforced unfailingly.

No animal deserves this type of callous and reprehensible treatment. Help us get justice for the animals killed at Lion's Gate Sanctuary.

We are committed to upholding and strengthening the legal protections for animals under the law, and refining all laws to recognize that animals deserve recognition and protection.

Every day the Animal Legal Defense Fund's expert attorneys are busy turning cruelty reports into cruelty convictions. Though we can't talk about active cases, we are actively working with law enforcement, prosecutors, and animal control agencies across the country — to hold animal abusers responsible.

Your support directly helped get these animals the justice they deserved:

Oregon Miles
Oregon: Miles – an emaciated horse discovered with a fellow horse so mistreated he had to be euthanized.
Shirley Wallace pleaded guilty to the charge of first‑degree animal neglect.
Texas Tiger
Texas: Tiger – a cat killed with a bow and arrow by a veterinarian.
Kristen Lindsey had her veterinary license suspended.
California Angel Star
California: Angel Star – A Chihuahua puppy killed by being set on fire in a cage.
Willie Bee Turner convicted of maliciously killing an animal, animal abuse, and two counts of arson.
Animal Legal Defense Fund reward offer brought in the key witness.
Oregon Charlie
Oregon: Charlie – a German Shepherd service dog who was shot in the head with a rifle by a neighbor.
Joseph Hardin convicted of first‑degree animal abuse.

There's a critical shortage of animal law education and information for prosecutors, and we're working day in and day out to change that. We provide free legal assistance to help police and prosecutors make their cases and secure justice for animals. Because we know that without our help, many of these cases would go unprosecuted or would result in weaker sentences.

Abuse an animal, go to jail. It's as simple as that. The Animal Legal Defense Fund believes that when innocent animals are abused or killed the punishment should fit the crime. With you by our side, we won't rest until anti‑cruelty laws are robust and strictly enforced.

In protest, nearly naked PETA activists gathered in Pamplona and filled the sky with a cloud of "blood." You can speak up for bulls, too, by urging the prime minister of Spain to end this torture immediately.
