Gun safety report, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), bodycam footage in shooting of Willie McCoy & only 3,569 people have been killed by guns and bullets in the first quarter 2019 this year!

Despite NRA opposition, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) passed the House today — it's an important victory in our work to protect women from gun violence. So why did the NRA oppose it? Well, it's the height of hypocrisy. The NRA says it wants to protect women, but it worked overtime to try to defeat a bill that protects women from gun violence! Simply put: the gun lobby can't have it both ways.

The NRA's extreme "guns everywhere" agenda is about putting profits over people at all costs. But we beat the gun lobby in the House today by a wide margin — Democrats and Republicans joined to pass VAWA with 263 YES votes to 158. Our representatives passed the Violence Against Women Act and its provisions to keep guns away from abusive boyfriends and stalkers.

The NRA leadership's fierce opposition to bipartisan, common-sense gun safety laws makes it the extreme outlier in Washington and America. And we're fighting back — advocating for life-saving laws like the Violence Against Women Act and fighting the gun lobby's extreme agenda.

We're putting gun safety first, and that's why the House voted YES on VAWA. It will expand domestic violence protections for women, keep guns away from abusive boyfriends and stalkers, and require law enforcement officials to be notified each time a domestic abuser illegally tries to buy a gun.

But the NRA is fighting hard to stop these provisions in the Senate and allow domestic abusers to continue to have easy access to guns.

Congress has the opportunity to protect women from gun violence.

The House of Representatives will be voting to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) — a critical, multi-faceted piece of federal legislation that provides survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking with access to justice and social services. And this year, the VAWA bill includes provisions to reduce gun violence against women by: (1) expanding federal law to keep guns away from abusive dating partners and stalkers and (2) alerting local law enforcement when domestic abusers attempt to buy guns.

The extreme NRA leadership is opposing these common-sense bipartisan policies. But we need our representatives to place a higher value on the lives of women than on an abusive boyfriend's access to guns.

And we're letting Congress know just how much support there is for these gun safety provisions.

Add your name to our letter urging Congress to pass the Violence Against Women Act.

When a gun is present in a domestic violence situation, it's five times more likely that the woman will be killed by her abusive partner. Now's the time to address the deadly loopholes in federal law that let violent dating partners and stalkers keep their guns. Why would the extreme NRA leadership want guns in the hands of abusive boyfriends when we have the chance to save lives?

While the NRA tries to pressure lawmakers to vote against gun safety, we need you to take action and get this message to Congress: Protect women and save lives.

Last month, the U.S. House passed H.R. 8 -- a bipartisan bill that would make our communities safer from the threat of gun violence by requiring universal background checks on every firearm purchased throughout the country.

Unsurprisingly, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refuses to bring the bipartisan legislation to a vote in the Senate -- despite this being the first real attempt to take action on common sense gun violence prevention in nearly 25 years.

Sign the petition today demanding that Mitch McConnell hold a fair vote on H.R. 8

Gun violence continues to affect countless communities across the country, leaving a devastating impact on the friends and family of victims in its wake. As tragedy after tragedy has splashed across our television screens and in headlines, many Americans are left wondering if and when our elected officials will act to prevent future gun violence.

More than 95% of Americans approve of universal background checks, yet Republicans in the Senate -- supported by gun lobby groups like the NRA -- would rather offer only their "thoughts and prayers" instead of also taking real, meaningful action to reduce gun violence.

Add your name to the growing outcry in support of Universal Background Checks and help secure a safer future for everyone

Over 40,000 Americans died from gun violence in 2018. Enough is enough. We need to keep the pressure on lawmakers in Washington to do what's right.
