Police Officer With Heart of Gold Braves Fire to Help Rescued Horse Graze

As soot, smoke, and embers filled the air of Paradise, California, humans and animals alike fled for there lives. Disasters, especially fires, are particularly frightening experience for animals, who are often abandon and left to fend for themselves against terrible and unexpected danger.

Recently, a pair a firefighters rescued a pair of donkeys fleeing the blaze, and stories of humans helping lost animals during the wildfire prove that even the worst of events can bring out the best in good people.

That same spirit of giving was on display again, when a brave police officer took a lost horse out to graze… In the wildfire’s smoke! As you can see from the pictures, the office is wearing a smoke mask to protect himself from the air quality.

Not much is know right now about the horse, other than he was found wandering alone in the soot. Hopefully this horse can get a happy ending, but for now at least, this beautiful creatures seems to be in caring hands. Source:

How to Help Animals in the Wake of California Wildfires. The Camp and Woolsey wildfires displaced thousands of California residents, human and non-human animals alike, from their homes, turning some of the world's most beautiful landscapes to ash in the process. Among those seeking relief from the flames were thousands of wild animals, and they still need our help.

On the morning of November 8, the Camp Fire ignited in Northern California. After burning for 17 days, the flames destroyed 150,000 acres in Butte County, making it the most destructive wildfire ever recorded in the state. A few hours later, The Woolsey Fire started to the south where it burned for over two weeks, destroying nearly 100,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura County.

What are wild animals to do when faced with massive fast-moving wildfires? Animals have "evolved to survive” hostile environments by developing various survival tactics. Often, birds can fly to safe locations as long as they are not nesting. Small burrowing animals, like chipmunks, squirrels and rabbits, can sometimes find relief below ground, where temperatures are tolerable. Larger, four-legged animals such as deer, mountain lions, and coyotes, sometimes have the ability to run from harm’s way. Tragically, gusting winds and dried vegetation can cause fires to spread too quickly, outpacing the animals trying to escape the flames.

Although animals have adapted to fend for themselves, they are not always able to do so when conditions are unusual, extreme, and unrelenting. If you are in the affected areas in California, there are a few things you can do to help the survivors. Containers of food and water can be placed in safe areas for hungry, dehydrated animals. Bird seed for birds and rodents, dry dog food for squirrels and opossums, hay and dried corn for deer, and fresh vegetables for rabbits, can be left out for desperate animals in search of food.

As a general rule, do not put these containers in hazardous areas with falling debris, active flames or by roads, or outside of your home or commercial areas. Animals are likely to return to these locations and will become dependent on people for survival, causing them more harm than good in the long run.

Thankfully, both of the fires are now fully contained. Animal sanctuaries and shelters are housing thousands of displaced and injured animals, and are in need of fosters and supplies. Please help out today with the disaster relief fund to help animals harmed by wildfires and other natural disasters.
When he was ripped away from his dying mother as an infant, gnawing hunger became baby John’s daily torment. Thank goodness Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, a PASA member in Zambia, learned about him before it was too late.
I never want to go hungry again.

John’s life with his captors was awful. Without his mother to hold and care for him, John’s world became terrifying. Even though he was a tiny baby, John’s captors tied a short rope tightly around his neck, so he couldn’t move and left him alone outside without a safe place to sleep. Day after day they gave John barely enough food to cling to life.

I can’t fathom the trauma John has endured. He was captured by poachers while his family lay dying. When he was a tiny baby, he was isolated and starved. You can be his hero by giving him the care he needs to survive.

This little chimp has suffered from such severe malnutrition that his growth has been stunted, and he might never recover. We think John is about two years old, but it’s impossible to know for sure.

A Secret Prisoner
Can you imagine being padlocked from a canvas strap wrapped tightly around your neck to a chainsaw to keep you from moving or running away? Neither can I, but this was Miriam’s private horror for years on end. She was being held secretly by a government official until feeding her got so expensive that he abandoned her.

We are so happy that she was discovered in time to save her life. Her recovery from this heinous abuse may take years, but the loving rehabilitation she will receive at Chimfunshi will help her to start a new life with a chimpanzee family.
Help me meet my new family...Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow

I'm thrilled to tell you that Miriam and John are safe in Chimfunshi. It took a lot of work and dedication to move them from South Sudan, a war-torn and extremely troubled country, to Zambia. But their journey isn’t over—their recovery can’t happen without your help.

Now that their transfer to Chimfunshi is complete, John and Miriam urgently need medical treatment, compassionate care, and extra nourishing food. A better life for these chimps is only possible with your help.

John is safe in his new forest home, but only you can give him the care he needs to heal and thrive.

After Weeks of Neglect, This Sweet Puppy Was Rescued From a Puppy Mill Along With Her Family!

Rescue Dogs Rock has an update on Charity, one of 12 puppies rescued from a puppy mill in Alabama.

These dogs were in the worst state imaginable. The owner didn’t have a clue about the sexes of these 10-month-old puppies because the mother gave birth outside. This irresponsible person wasn’t even aware there were any pups for about four weeks and never bothered to look for sick or missing dogs!

Charity, thankfully, is now safe. She had horrific mange and was infested with fleas. She was clearly suffering for a long time. Charity was malnourished, almost hairless, and covered in sores that are red and bleeding. It seems that some kind of chemical was poured on her perhaps in an attempt to treat these wounds but has only made things worse.

When she was in the shelter, Charity just sat there dejected and whining, and who could blame her for being left like this? Thankfully, Rescue Dogs Rock immediately arranged for her medical care. Charity was taken to their Georgia vet being checked over and cared for.

It’s impossible to not want to reach into the screen and snuggle this little girl. To know that the only life she has ever known is one of cruelty and neglect is utterly heartbreaking. We can’t wait to hear that she is recovered and setting off to live with a family that is going to give her everything she will ever need.

This is the side of puppy mills we need to stand up against. Puppies are left in awful conditions with no medical treatment. Mange, dental problems, genetic deformities, fleas, and matted fur or no fur at all are just some of the issues pups born in these mills face. Mama dogs are bred continuously, their pups taken away from them so there is no time to bond, leaving these poor dogs exhausted and missing their babies. Every step taken to end puppy mills is a great one, to prevent stories like Charity’s being such a regular occurrence that we dismiss it as normal. This cruelty isn’t normal.
Rescue Dogs Rock takes in and saves the lives of dogs like Charity every single day. There are thousands more who need help that Rescue Dogs Rock can and will do all they can to give them better lives. But this doesn’t come cheap; they need kind volunteers and generous donations to keep going. Please take a look at their Facebook page to see just a taste of some of the incredible work they do! Transfer Animals to Reputable Sanctuaries Now! Despite being cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the illegal transfer of newborn wild cats two years in a row, A Walk on the Wild Side—a roadside zoo in Washington County, Oregon—is still condemning animals to a life on display at fairs and public events.

Last year, Steven Higgs, the owner of the facility, was cited for illegally transferring a 2-week-old tiger cub more than a thousand miles, from Oklahoma to Oregon, and he was cited the previous year for transporting two 3-week-old bobcats from Florida. He's also been cited for keeping animals in unsafe enclosures—including those with broken and sharp wire mesh and exposed metal—as well as having inadequate perimeter fencing around dangerous animals.
Animals like big cats used at fairs and other public events have to deal with frightening sounds and endure gawking strangers. Not only are they denied everything that's natural and important to them—like exploring vast home ranges of up to hundreds of square miles—they are also forced to travel in cramped trailers and often exhibit signs of distress and depression.
Please use the form below to tell A Walk on the Wild Side to stop exhibiting wild animals and urge it to retire the animals at its facility to reputable sanctuaries.
