It’s now been over several weeks since Hurricane Florence struck, and while life carries on for most, few realize the just how high the death toll has been, and the animal lives that have perished.

A staggering 3.4 million chickens and turkeys have been confirmed dead, as well as over five thousand pigs. And the number is only expected to rise.

These “assets,” as which they had later been described, were left behind to die.

These frightened animals fought for their lives. Some of the pigs managed to swim and escape, but many more weren’t as lucky. These young pigs never had the opportunity to exercise or even go outside, so many drowned or died from exhaustion.

It's hard to imagine the terror they felt in the last moments of their little lives.

This mass tragedy shows the darkest side of factory farming, and in the wake of this silent tragedy, World Animal Protection demands an end to factory farming.

With one bill, Congress could unleash the widespread killing of northern gray wolves across the country.

Members of Congress have introduced a bill that would leave most gray wolves at the mercy of the states. And you and I have seen where that can lead: Dead wolves.

This bill has already advanced in Congress – but we are coming out strong to stop this deadly legislation from going any further.

Won’t you help? Your emergency gift will help save wolves and other imperiled species.

This hateful bill, H.R. 6784, is called the “Manage Our Wolves Act.” A more accurate title would be the “Open Season on Wolves Act,” because it takes a brutal approach to ‘managing’ wolves by:

Stripping wolves of all protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA);

Turning most wolf ‘management’ over to the states; and

Eliminating the right to go to court to fight for the wolves you and I love.

What does ‘state wolf management’ mean?

In Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, thousands of wolves have been killed since losing ESA protection. And we’ve seen some of Yellowstone National Park’s most iconic and beloved wolves shot and killed just across the park border.

And don’t forget Alaska, where not even a denning mother and her pups are safe.

We’ve come a long way toward seeing wolves recover in the lower 48. But we’ve got a long way to go. If this bill passes, wolf recovery could stop dead in its tracks.

With all of the other attacks underway, including efforts to gut the ESA, anti-wildlife forces think they have the upper hand. But they don’t. Not if wildlife lovers like you refuse to surrender to the assault.

Abused and Left for Dead. Imagine being beaten, stabbed, and left in the trash for dead by someone you trusted. Tucker didn't have to. He lived through it. A beautiful, friendly six-year-old orange tabby cat, Tucker was brutally beaten, stabbed, and thrown in the trash, allegedly by his guardian's angry, drunk (and now ex-) boyfriend, Alex. Even though Tucker is home safely now and healed, his abuser continues to roam free with no consequences at all. Luckily, Tucker's had champions like you fighting for him since this horrible ordeal. DONATE TODAY

Please join us in supporting a state bill that will upgrade New Jersey’s tethering and "proper shelter" law.

Clarification is needed around the circumstances under which animals may be seized. This new bill would ensure that seizures are executed correctly, animal cruelty is prosecuted successfully and more animals get the help they require.

What You Can Do

Today we are looking for justice for a beautiful girl named Faith, whose life was ended far too soon because of the barbaric treatment she was subjected to by her owners.

Faith was set to be abandoned, which is hard enough to have to think about, yet her owners wanted to do one better to ensure this poor little girl couldn’t return home. They wrapped duct tape around her legs, binding them together so she couldn’t move, then threw her out on the Interstate.

Without any way to save herself, poor Faith was run over and dragged by numerous cars, and she sustained too many injuries to recover from. Faith had multiple skull fractures, her entire head and eyes swollen, and her body covered in road rash and wounds. Even trying to imagine the agony this little girl went through is utterly heartbreaking.

All we can be thankful for is that Faith wasn’t alone at the end of her life. An officer stayed with Faith when she was found and assisted the Webster Humane Association in rushing her to the Claiborne Animal Clinic where they hoped she could be saved. Dr. Tinsley and Mrs. Tonya met rescuers at the clinic despite it being closed, and their care meant Faith’s last moments were gentle ones.

We are deeply upset by this story, as we are any time we hear about an animal suffering. But us being upset is not going to bring Faith back at all. All we can hope to do now is help get the justice this beautiful girl deserves. The Webster Humane Association is offering a $2,500 reward for the arrest and conviction of the people who are responsible for Faith’s death.

So here is how you can help. We know that Faith was thrown out near mile marker 40 at the Goodwill exit, eastbound on the I20. Faith was repeatedly run over and dragged down the Interstate by a number of cars. Someone has to have seen what happened. Somebody must know something that will help. The collar, rope, and duct tape that Faith was found with have been confiscated for further investigation, but at the moment there is very little information to go on.

The Webster Humane Association is asking for anyone with information to call their confidential hotline at 318-377-7433, and there is more information available on their Facebook page. Please do not let Faith’s life to have been taken for nothing. If you have any information at all, please get in touch. Image Source: Webster Humane Association
Luna and Buboy
Just when we think we’ve seen it all in our work to stop the brutal dog meat trade, a rescue like the one that just happened in the Philippines comes along.

FOURTEEN dogs were cruelly stuffed into an unforgiving steel crate (barely big enough for even one dog) that was bolted to a motorbike.

The dogs were suffocating and gasping and choking and crying. Still they tried to lick our fingers through the bars in a last gesture of friendship!

We’ll explain in a moment the kinds of medical needs faced by the survivors of this nightmare, but the x-ray below of one dog’s crushed leg is a clear indication.

The care required is extensive and expensive and your support of any amount now will help. Please donate generously for the dogs if you possibly can, as soon as you can.

This kind of suffering should never be.

But in the Philippines motorbikes with cage-like sidecars are a huge tip-off that dogs are being violently snatched from the streets for slaughter in the dog meat trade. Tracking these traffickers is part of our ongoing work for dogs that support like yours helps fund.

Together with the local police, we chased down the kidnappers and seized the dogs on the spot, extracting them one by one from that suffocating prison.

Amidst the agonized wailing of Buboy, the sweet soul with the shattered leg, we were devastated to find three dead dogs at the bottom of the cage.

As dog after dog was pushed on top of them, they’d been crushed or suffocated to death.

How we wish they’d been among the animals reaching out to us in friendship.

One of the mama dogs (Luna) from the cage was pregnant – and it looked as if her puppies were still safe inside her!

It’s a long road for these dogs and we know we have asked for your help before.

But if you are able to donate and help us provide for their medical care and rehabilitation it would be a godsend.

Thank you today and always for being such a friend to the dogs. We hate to think where they’d be without your love and support.

Four of Luna’s five puppies made it! The rest of the dogs are in fragile health. Buboy with the shattered leg has such bad worms that the vet wants him to regain his strength before attempting surgery. That’s him in the photo up above, not long after his rescue – sedated but weary. We’ll update you as soon as we know more, and ask if you will please speed his recovery or help fund his medications.
