Two weeks ago TrueCar announced it will no longer advertise its car buying service as an NRA member benefit. We are thrilled and relieved that TrueCar listened to its customers, the American people and the dozen companies that left the NRA earlier that week and finally did the right thing.

After the shooting in Vegas, we wondered more we could do. We started poking around the NRA website & we were shocked to see how many corporations seemed ok with associating themselves with a divisive, dangerous lobbying organization. DrainTheNRA was born. We decided we'd focus on local, LA-based TrueCar. We tweeted, wrote a fancy letter, started this petition & 20 people protested in front of the office on the Sandy Hook anniversary in December. We spent the holidays & Jan building our website while watching school shooting after school shooting. Then Parkland happened. F-k it, let's protest. Four days later on President's Day, the People's Rally Against Gun Violence in Pershing Sq took place. All of this is happening because 17 people lost their lives and we decided that now is the time to finally do the right thing after so many have lost their lives. We can change this country. We can save lives. We are a force. Don't stop. It's life or death.

Thank you to everyone who signed and shared this petition. We've only just begun and we hope you continue this journey with us. For actions and updates you can:

Right now, our legislators risk failing to pass the most meaningful legislation that has been introduced in Washington in years. We have an opportunity to take a real step toward ending the gun violence crisis in our state. We owe it to our students and communities to make schools safer, but as of today, inaction is winning, and we need your help to pass lifesaving gun violence prevention laws and defeat the gun lobby?

There's a chance to make real progress right now by passing the School and Community Safety bill, which raises the age to buy semi-automatic rifles – but this lifesaving policy is hanging by the smallest of threads, and we've got just two more days to turn it into law.
"To let these victims' lives be taken without any change in return is an act of treason to our great country." – Lorenzo Prado, Parkland school shooting survivor
Right now, we’re in Olympia rallying with students and advocates throughout the state to tell legislators that we are holding them accountable. We’re on the ground, working sunup to sundown to ensure we have the votes to pass this policy before the legislative session ends. But the gun lobby is fighting us at every turn, using every tactic to block this legislation and prolong the gun violence epidemic.

Even the Florida State Senate – which is controlled by the NRA – managed to pass legislation raising the age to buy semi-automatic rifles, but we still await a vote here in Washington. Our legislators have NO excuse for not getting it done here in Washington. We need you to join the fight to pass lifesaving gun violence prevention laws and defeat the gun lobby

After a mass shooting killed 17 people in Florida, companies rushed to distance themselves from the NRA. In just one week, amid pressure from thousands of people on social media, two dozen companies announced they would end their partnerships with the gun lobby.

 This pressure came after ThinkProgress published a list of companies that entice more people to join the NRA by providing additional benefits to NRA members. This list has since been viewed by millions of people -- people who took action to demand change.

 The grassroots pressure on companies to end their relationships with the NRA become a national story that virtually every major media organization covered.

 We are creating a $100,000 NRA Accountability Fund to intensify our efforts. A donation of just $5 or $10 can help ensure we have the time and resources to keep digging, day after day.

We’re not easing up on the gun lobby anytime soon.

 After our initial report, we kept digging. We published a story exposing the banks supporting gun manufacturers. We reported on the tech companies that stream NRA propaganda online. We published a confidential internal document revealing FedEx has secretly allowed powerful forces in the gun industry, including the NRA, to ship guns at a much lower cost. And we keep getting results.

 For example, Delta and United abruptly announced they would terminate their contracts with the NRA to provide discounted flights to the organization’s annual convention in May, just hours after ThinkProgress reported the NRA was touting special discount codes for their members.

 We have more stories we know we want to chase down, but we need your help.

 The past several weeks have proven the value of progressive journalism. Even in the Trump era, providing the facts to our readers has the power to make a real difference in the world.

Can you chip in to sustain ThinkProgress’ accountability journalism?

We aren’t afraid to turn the spotlight on corporations that help prop up the gun industry. That’s because ThinkProgress isn’t dependent on corporate advertising to fund our work. Instead, we rely on support from people like you.

 The NRA has had its grip on our politics for decades. But things are changing. And we’ll keep fighting. Join us.

A strong majority in the United States tells pollsters we support a new ban on assault weapons.

Such a ban would be one small step toward reducing gun deaths.

It's a step similar to those that have worked successfully in other countries.

And it's a step that has worked before in the United States.

Mass-shootings that killed six or more people were significantly more numerous and deadly between 1984 and 1994 than during the years of the assault weapons ban, 1994 to 2004. They rose dramatically between 2004 and 2014, after the ban was lifted.

Let’s support Florida’s brave high school activists by taking the battle over assault weapons to Congress.

A new bill has been introduced in the House called the Assault Weapons Ban of 2018, H.R. 5087. It would prohibit the sale, transfer, production, and importation of:

  • Semi-automatic rifles and handguns with a military-style feature that can accept a detachable magazine;
  • Semi-automatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds;
  • Semi-automatic shotguns with a military-style feature;
  • Any ammunition feeding device that can hold more than 10 rounds;
  • And 205 specifically-named and listed firearms.
Click here to email your Representative and your Senators to build support for passage.

There is momentum right now, and we have to push it forward, to give the right to life a chance against the supposed right to weapons of mass-murder.

Can you forward this to 10 people you know and ask them to help too?

After taking action online, print out these "Ban Assault Weapons Now" posters and bring them to public events.
