Chris Christie Vetoed Bill That Would Ban Wild Animal Circus Acts in New Jersey — Let’s Get Governor Murphy to Change This!

The issue of using wild animals, particularly elephants, in circuses has been a hot topic recently. Thanks to the tireless efforts of animal activists, the general public has become aware of the tremendous animal cruelty involved in circuses. Not only are wild animals obtained through suspect manner, but once held in captivity by circuses, they endure endless torment, are kept in box-like enclosures, and are only allowed out when performing or practicing “tricks” under threat of bullhooks, whips, and other physical abuse.

Using wild animals in circuses is not just dangerous for animals, the practice poses serious risks to people as well. Wild animals cannot be domesticated within their lifetime, and they remain inherently wild. Enduring such high degrees of stress and abuse, they often lash out, and a number have even escaped into the public, where they tragically succumb to the fate of being shot and killed.

Aware of the serious issues surrounding using wild animals in circuses, many countries have banned the use of wild animals in circuses. Here is the U.S., cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe have banned the use of wild animals for live entertainment, and Illinois and New York became the first states to ban the use of elephants in circuses.

Similar legislation was introduced in New Jersey that called for the ban of using all wild animals in circuses, and the bill passed the New Jersey legislature by votes of 66-2-2 in the General Assembly and by 31-0 in the State Senate. However, on his last day in office, former governor Chris Christie decided to pocket veto the bill, by not signing it into law, stopping it from going into effect.

A revised version of the bill is now set to be presented to New Jersey’s new governor, Phil Murphy, and a petition has been set up on Care2 to encourage Gov. Murphy to sign the bill and make the Garden State more humane. Please take a moment to sign the petition here.

Some people are still unaware of the animal cruelty involved in circuses and other live acts, so make sure you share this with your network to increase support for captive wild animals!
In 2017 Illinois and New York became the first states in the U.S. to ban circus elephant acts. This means that any circus that still uses elephants can no longer perform anywhere in the entire state of Illinois or New York. Now in 2018 New Jersey is poised to take this even farther and completely ban the use of any exotic animals in circuses, this includes elephants, tigers, lions, and bears.

All animals, especially elephants, suffer terribly in the circus industry. They lead lives of sadness, constant fear, and despair. This bill passed the New Jersey legislature by votes of 66-2-2 in the General Assembly and by 31-0 in the State Senate. Unfortunately outgoing New Jersey Governor Chris Christie decided to "pocket veto" the bill, which means that he declined to sign it before leaving office.

But now New Jersey has a new governor and therefore renewed hope to end circus suffering! A new revised circus bill will be presented to new governor Phil Murphy for his approval. Please join me in asking governor Murphy to sign this very important bill into law. The state of New Jersey can lead the way to end circus suffering for all exotic animals in the United States!

Ready, Set, Ban! End the Dog & Cat Meat Trade in South Korea. Dog and cat meat is a hot button issue, particularly in countries where dogs and cats are considered friends, not food, and most people wouldn’t dream of eating them. South Korea is one of several countries changing its relationship with dogs and cats. In the run up to the Winter Olympics next month, the nation has taken a positive step and imposed restrictions on certain dog and cat meat markets. Now is a vital time to urge a permanent outright ban on dog and cat meat once and for all! TAKE ACTION

End the Imprisonment of Big Cats. Tigers, lions, jaguars, and other large felines belong in the wild. Unfortunately, somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 of these wild creatures are kept in captivity in the United States as pets or in roadside zoos. Wildcats require large territories, and although some may appear tame when caged or confined, they are not able to be truly domesticated. Keeping these majestic animals in small spaces restricts their freedom of movement and expression of natural behavior, and is incredibly cruel. TAKE ACTION
