Road rage highway shooting: Man shot in the face while driving in Pearl, Mississippi
Help Protect Vulnerable Wildlifeelephants (c) Chris Royle, DPC
If we don’t stop this appalling bill, we could witness the extinction of elephants within 15 years.
Just this week, the Obama Administration finalized powerful new restrictions to crack down on the illegal trade in African elephant ivory. But it turns out that elephants may not be as safe as we had thought.

The gun lobby is pressing for a Congressional measure that, if passed, would completely undo this hard-won progress.

The United States is among the world’s largest ivory markets and a significant contributor to the illegal ivory trade. Backtracking on these vital new protections for African elephants could spell disaster for the species, which is facing a poaching crisis of epidemic proportions.

Your donation will help Defenders fight for elephants and other imperiled wildlife.

An elephant is slaughtered every 15 minutes in Africa. If the killing doesn’t stop, we will witness one of the most tragic and heartbreaking extinctions of our time.

And it’s not just elephants at risk – it’s wolves, bears and other vulnerable wildlife too!

The ivory provision is one of many poison pills hidden away in a massive bill called the “North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2016.” In addition to a raft of pro-oil, pro-coal and climate change-denying provisions, this venomous package also contains anti-wildlife measures including:

Stripping Endangered Species Act protections from wolves in Wyoming and the Great Lakes region with no opportunity for citizens to challenge this action in court;

Provisions that would allow the most extreme forms of wolf and bear hunting on over 100 million acres of federally-protected wildlife habitat in Alaska, including baiting, snaring and killing mothers and young; and

Language that would severely undermine wildlife safeguards and encourage increased logging in the national forests that millions of creatures rely on for survival.

Defenders is the voice in Washington, D.C. for species that have no voice of their own. And we’re your voice too. Together, you and I have made a difference for the wildlife we love over the years.

These are shameful provisions, but with your help, we’ll stop this deadly bill in its tracks.

Please give generously, for elephants and all the wildlife you love.
