Incredible Moment Little Boy Risked His Life to Save Fawn Trapped in Deadly Flood. Sometimes, people go to incredible lengths to save another life. In that incredible moment, all fear and worry take a back seat and bravery takes over.

That’s exactly what happened for this young boy from Noakhali, Bangladesh, who risked his life to save a baby deer from drowning. The deer had been separated from its family during flood rains and was struggling in the water.

Seeing the deer on the brink of death, the boy, Belal, dove into the water to rescue the fawn.

He could have died in the process, but managed to save the deer from a terrible fate.

A wildlife photographer, Hasibul Wahab, who happened to be on site during Belal’s courageous act, told the Daily Mail, “He was such a brave boy–the river was so full of water and it was high tide so we thought he might drown.”

He continued, “My friend was even ready to jump into the river to save the boy. But he made it, and when he returned, we thanked the boy.”

And we know the deer must have thanked him as well, as he was finally able to reunite with his family!

Kitten Jessica Peralta
Thank Shelter for Saving Over 5,000 Kittens.

Target: Gregory Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society
Goal: Thank animal welfare organization for saving over 5,000 kittens.
The Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles has saved over 5,000 kittens. This shelter had a kitten nursery built specifically for young kittens who need 24/7 care. The shelter has even received kittens with the placenta still attached.
Volunteers rub the kittens’ bellies to stimulate their bladders and bowels, bottle feed the babies and provide socialization. Constant care is critical for these kittens.
Kittens are a high risk population for euthanasia because there are so many and because they require constant care. The opening of the nursery has helped save thousands of lives. Sign the petition and thank the shelter’s dedication to helping these animals.
Dear Mr. Castle,
Due to the overpopulation of stray cats in the Los Angeles area, kittens face a high risk for euthanasia due to the sheer number of them and their need for constant care. In response, the Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles opened a kitten nursery made specifically for young kittens who need 24/7 care.
Thanks to this nursery and the dedicated volunteers, over 5,000 kittens have been saved. Thank you for going to such lengths to save this high risk population. I hope more shelters are inspired by your actions and build kitten nurseries of their own.
Sincerely,

Pregnant Rebecca lived in a cage so small, she could not turn around.  Angie was forced to sleep in her own feces. They are two pigs we welcomed from a Washington state cruelty investigation by the Whatcom Humane Society.

Watch Angi's arrival!
We drove 36 hours round-trip to bring four pigs to safety -- Rebecca and Angi to Animal Place and two others to another sanctuary.

Sadly, after only  a month in our care, Rebecca did not make it. Her loss is particularly hard - when someone survives such immense trauma, we want them to live many years in peace and sanctuary. We are grateful to have given her a month of love, compassion, and patience.

Angi is heartbroken over the loss of her friend. We are beginning the process of integrating her with the main herd so she can make new bonds and hopefully lessen her grief.

Please consider a $25 donation to the care of Angi. Your gift helps offset the initial costs of spaying, transporting, and providing veterinary care to Angi.

Watching These Kind People Help a Sloth Trapped on a Busy Highway Will Make Your Day.
While animals are similar to us in many ways, there is no doubt that they live their lives at a completely different pace than humans. We rush around, going to jobs, running errands, and doing general life things and they have but one goal: to survive. Even though we operate at different paces, eventually our worlds overlap. We’re all coexisting on one planet, after all.

Take the video above, for example. As humans, we know that highways are meant for cars, and can be dangerous to anyone trying to cross on foot. For this little sloth, however, it’s just another day in the life, and he simply has to get from one end of the highway to another. Before long, some kind folks saw the sloth and knew that, at the pace that he was crossing, he was likely to get run over. So they decided to help him out a bit! They lift him up, rush across the highway, and plant him right on a tree, where he belongs.

While we definitely are glad that these good samaritans took the time out of their day to ensure that this sloth got to where he was going safely, the best thing to do in a situation like this is contact a wildlife rescuer or rehabber. They are best equipped to handle such situations to make sure the animal is fit to return to the wild. If you are not able to locate a wildlife rehabber, contact a rescue hotline. Click to watch!

Rescued.  Adorable.  But heartworm-positive.

Time is of the essence!

In Defense of AnimalsThirty-one dogs at Hope Animal Sanctuary urgently need medical treatment.

Thirty-one beautiful dogs - all whom we rescued from horrific abuse and neglect - have tested heartworm-positive.  They require costly emergency treatment to cure them so they can be welcomed into forever homes.

Your generous donation today will fund their cure!

I am writing to you today even though you have not yet made a donation to one of IDA's life changing (and in this case, lifesaving) campaigns. However, you have shown such a strong commitment to animals in desperate need that I know (I hope) I can count on you now in this life or death situation.

There's Annie Mae, found abandoned and dazed by the side of the interstate.

Or Brady, a sweet beagle mix whose humans died - but no one else would take him.

And Lance, who we found scared, alone, and half-starving in an abandoned crack house.  Today he walks on a leash like a pro, and "smiles" when he sees you!

Without heartworm treatment, they can’t make the transport from IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary in Mississippi to our adoption partner in the northeast - where homes wait.

But treatment costs up to $1,500 per dog... nearly $50,000 for these dogs alone!  More heartworm-positive friends come in every month.  We need your help.

Your donation today, joined with gifts from others, will fund emergency treatment and make possible a chance at a forever home for lovable Lance and his friends.

First, you'll fund antibiotics and steroids.  In fact, due to Lance's condition we started him on this phase of the treatment already.

After the antibiotic, you'll help fund the expensive vaccines that kill the spaghetti-like adult heartworms (often they grow a foot long!) doing all the damage.

Then, it's four to six more months of recovery at our sanctuary, including healthy food and care (and lots of love!), until their heartworm test is negative ... and they can be on their way!

Heartworm is a potentially fatal disease.  They can't make the transport without treatment.

Please support this urgent, lifesaving appeal for our heartworm-positive dogs so they can be cured and, soon, be embraced and loved by a forever family. In Defense of AnimalsTime really is of the essence!

The Difference You've Made For Tithonia...
Tithonia’s recent experience is one that has really stood out for me and I’m sure his story will touch you too.

Rescued from the streets while battling cancer, he was in a world of pain. A tumour had taken over his face to such an extent that he was in very real danger of losing an eye. Without you, dogs like him truly have no hope.

The type of tumour Tithonia was suffering from is quite common among the Thai street dog population and our vets are very experienced in successfully treating them. But without you funding the treatment involved, this suffering boy would most likely not be alive today.

Only you can help dogs like Tithonia get the treatment they need. To save lives today, please become a member of the Emergency Response Team.

Thanks to you, he was started on chemotherapy and within weeks, the tumour had shrunk dramatically. Tithonia is now well on his way to making a full recovery and this would never have been possible without your support. I hope the enclosed pictures show you just what a difference you’ve made for him.

Tithonia has now recovered from his horrific tumour thanks to you. He is now an affectionate and fun-loving boy who will soon be departing the shelter to start his new life in the USA.

After 11 Years On The Streets Of Thailand, Boogaloo Finds A Home In The USA...Here at Soi Dog, your support means we have learnt to never say never. Rescued from the streets where he had spent his entire life, Boogaloo was a heart-breaking sight when he arrived at our shelter. Covered in tumours and weak and emaciated, I really wasn’t sure if he would make it.

But this boy obviously had other ideas and after being started on treatment funded entirely by people like you, Boogaloo’s fighting spirit started to break through. Please click here to watch a video of his story.

Since that video was made, a wonderful lady named Lyn, in Oregon, USA, who had been sponsoring Boogaloo, got in touch to ask if she could adopt him. Here is a picture of Boogaloo today, relaxing on the bed in his new home. After a lifetime of sleeping on the streets, this is what you have done for him! Thank you.

Photo Captures the Moment a Former Mill Puppy Realizes There is More to Life Than a Wire Cage. When most people think of puppies, nothing but happy images of wagging tails and wet noses come to mind. There is a reason that we associate puppies with unbridled happiness, it is near impossible not to see one and turn into a puddle of absolute mush. While this might be the case, the sad reality is that life for puppies isn’t always so warm and fuzzy.

The majority of dogs that we see in the windows of pet stores come from puppy mills. These are large-scale breeding facilities where dogs are treated as nothing more than commodities to be sold. Breeding dogs are kept in tiny wire cages for their entire lives, deprived of any form of medical care – and even the basic necessities of clean food and water. These pups will never know what it is like to run free on soft grass or experience the simple luxury of a proper bed to sleep in. The most tragic part in all of this is the fact that the sale of puppies goes right back to keeping breeding dogs captive. So, we may only see sweet puppies on the other side of shop windows, but what we don’t see is untold amounts of suffering and abuse.

The good news, however, is there are many organizations working tirelessly to put an end to this cruel industry. National Mill Dog Rescue specializes in carrying out rescue missions, saving dogs from defunct mills and giving them a proper chance at the life they deserve.

This incredible photo captures the moment a former mill dog realized they were finally free.

Will you help give traumatized orangutans a safe, forever home?

Because you love animals like I do, I wanted to tell you about an opportunity to help some traumatized orangutans who have suffered greatly.

Pepsi was captured from the wild as a baby and illegally trafficked to a theme park in Thailand. She was likely starved and beaten into performing unnatural and degrading behavior on stage, like staged boxing matches. Orangutans like Pepsi live in constant state of torture.

When Pepsi was rescued, she didn’t even know how to be an orangutan anymore. She walked on two legs, like a person, and had forgotten all her natural behavior instincts – she couldn’t even climb a tree. Even now, years after being rescued, she still “performs” for food. Sadly, Pepsi will never be able to live in the wild again.
This orphaned orangutan lost some of her fingers, possibly from a machete attack. She is now at the BOSF sanctuary, but is looking for a safe forever home.
World Animal Protection is working with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) to secure a forest sanctuary on a river island in Borneo where disabled, old, and traumatized orangutans like Pepsi can live in a safe, forever home and receive the care and security they need to survive. Please consider donating today to help protect orangutans and other vulnerable animals today.

Here are some ways you can help:
  • $21 could feed an orangutan at the sanctuary for one week
  • $46 could pay for a security guard for one week, keeping the orangutans safe from harm
  • $64 could buy vital equipment for running the sanctuary, such as special work clothes for staff
  • $320 could pay for an orangutan’s vital health tests upon arriving to the sanctuary, to keep both new and existing orangutans safe and healthy
Wild animals like Pepsi should never be used for our entertainment – and for them to be left so traumatized that they can never again return to the wild is simply heart-breaking.

If you feel the same as I do, please give a gift that could help build a home for Pepsi and other vulnerable orangutans and help animals around the world live in safety and comfort. They have suffered enough for one lifetime.

Unlucky Heron Stuck in Netting
Urgent update from Ecuador - the earthquake's animal victims need you. I'm sure you heard the news of the April 16th earthquake in Ecuador that caused vast destruction. At least 659 people died and nearly 28,000 were injured.
Animals were also killed and injured, and IFAW is supporting our partner in Ecuador, Darwin Animal Doctors, who are part of a group of animal rescue organizations working alongside human relief agencies.

The animal victims of the earthquake need your help.

With your gift, you can help us provide emergency medical supplies, food for starving animals, and shelter for injured and abandoned animals. And your gift will help us rescue, care for, and protect animals everywhere we're helping them.

"Pico" is the frail puppy in the photograph above. His paw was badly injured in the earthquake but he received expert veterinary care and is now recovering.

Help animals like Pico:
Pico is from the city of Pedernales, where 70% of buildings collapsed and so many people and animals were killed and injured.

People in Pedernales have lost their homes and jobs. There is no electricity, infrastructure is destroyed, and officials fear that diseases may soon take hold.

Thousands of families are still living in temporary shelters with no homes to return to.

Many families brought their beloved pets with them to the shelter. Now we need to help their pets by providing them with food, veterinary care, and other supplies.
Help the animal victims
Victims of Ecuador's recent earthquake
This howler monkey was so frightened that he wouldn't let go of his rescuers. He was found alone with several injuries and needs expert care. More animals are streaming into emergency shelters every day.
Unfortunately, many families have had to flee to stay with family in other parts of Ecuador. But their pets can't go with them and so, with tears in their eyes, they hand over their pets to the staff at the temporary shelter.

It's heartbreaking to think that, after the tragedy they've been through, they now have to give up their beloved family pets.

We need to care for these abandoned animals on their journey to find a new home. This takes time and resources like transportation and supporting foster homes outside of the affected areas.

Will you please help us care for all the animals whose lives we're trying to make better every day?

Chained Dog Reunited With Best Friend After Years Apart

When They Found This Injured Puppy Huddled in a Temple, Things Didn’t Look Good. Then Something Amazing Happened.
Temples of worship bring solace to many. Whether it’s to pray or find shelter from life’s many troubles, thousands flock to these sacred structures. While it’s unlikely that animals can perceive the cultural and societal significance these buildings hold, it’s tempting to feel that this is was case in the video above.

Wounded and shivering in the corner, Punkin, the dog was discovered in a temple in India. The pup didn’t move an inch when Animal Aid Unlimited crew members entered the religious building. In fact, he was so deeply traumatized and weak upon Animal Aid’s arrival, that the rescue team was able to lift the poor pup and transport him to their facilities without any resistance. Having lost a significant amount of blood and as a result becoming dangerously dehydrated, Punkin received IV fluids for several days before stabilizing.

After a deep wound cleaning and four weeks of careful monitoring, Punkin became a totally different pup!

As troubling as it is to these sweet animals in distress, and knowing that hundreds of homeless animals lead a similarly difficult life, it sure is beautiful to see their recovery. We’re glad that Punkin was smart enough to find somewhere warm and covered to start his recovery, and that Animal Aid found him well enough to continue it. Learn more about Animal Aid Unlimited’s work by visiting their website and maybe even consider donating to their wonderful cause!

Incredible Photo Captures the Moment a Rescued Pit Bull Finally Realized She Was SafePit Bulls are some of the most misunderstood dogs. Targeted as vicious animals, Pit Bulls and Pit-Mixes are often the victims of horrific abuse at the hands of cruel humans – primarily those that wish to use them for the purpose of dog fighting. Taking advantage of Pit’s natural loyalty, dog fighters beat and starve these animals until they learn to fight – usually to death – all so that they can turn a profit.

As if this form of abuse wasn’t bad enough, dog fighting has left a sordid stain on the Pit Bull’s reputation and many people assume these dogs are naturally aggressive and enjoy fighting by nature. Due to this belief, these dogs are frequently abandoned or discarded by irresponsible owners and have an incredibly hard time getting adopted in shelters – in fact, they have a euthanasia rate of around 93 percent because of these unfounded fears.

Tabitha was one such neglected Pit Bull. This sweet pup was rescued by Hope for Paws after she was found lying on the streets, barely able to walk due to a leg injury. Unlike other dog rescues that typical involve a struggle and some sort of resistance from the dog, this one was reportedly very simple and sweet Tabitha happily surrendered herself to the team’s care.

While it is unknown what sort of life or pain this pup endured, since rescue, she has an incredible look of relief on her face. After a life of uncertainty, Tabitha can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

This is the face of a pup who knows their days of suffering are over.
pup
According to the Hope for Paws team, Tabitha is a total lovebug who befriends everyone she meets. She needed to undergo hydrotherapy to help her injured leg grow stronger and has been on pain medication, but through it all, she’s stayed a kind and gentle soul. Apparently, one of her favorite things to do is grab a toy in her mouth, curl up in a cozy place and fall asleep. Truly the image of bliss that all dogs deserve to have!

How Can You Help Dogs Like Tabitha
Tabitha is one lucky Pit Bull who found her way into the care of people who were willing to give her the care she needs – regardless of her looks or breed. It is up to all of us to put an end to needless stereotypes that have real detrimental effects on animals. At the end of the day, all dogs have the capability to be amazing, sweet companions if they are raised by responsible guardians. Share this post and encourage others rethink their prejudices against animals of all kinds.

Seeing Tabitha’s happy face, we can’t help up to wonder, if you can change a dog’s world by simply changing your thinking … why wouldn’t you? All image source: Hope for Paws/Flickr.
Milkshake the Cow Thinks Rescuer is Her Mom.
Love is love; it doesn’t matter what species you are, it exists just the same. Just like Milkshake and her human mom, Beth DeCaprio!

Milkshake was rescued by DeCaprio when she was only two weeks old. Milkshake was living in terrible conditions, kept in a 10×10 pen that she would not likely have escaped from if not for DeCaprio. As we know, cows are some of the most mistreated animals in the agriculture industry. Despite their intelligence and emotional complexity, cows are viewed as commodities and consequently abused.

After being rescued, Milkshake has turned into a bit of an internet star. Proving that cows have the same capacity to love and work their way into your hearts as cats and dogs, to DeCaprio, Milkshake is just like any other pet…except for the fact that she’s just a tad heavier. Milkshake follows DeCaprio all around the ranch at The Grace Foundation, as you’ll see in the video, and her bright personality shows she is certainly a someone, not a something.

Rescued Lamb Finds Comfort on the Road to Recovery Thanks to Stuffed Animal Friend.
Neo is a very special little lamb who was rescued by Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary in Victoria Australia, one year ago. Edgar’s Mission is an animal rescue group that provides a lifelong home for Australia’s abused, injured, and neglected farm animals. When they found him, poor Neo was suffering from a life-threatening case of sunburn that had caused him to lose the fur on most of his body. While he was being treated, Neo needed to be kept in isolation, which can be very scary for a herd animal.

Luckily, the people at the sanctuary were thoughtful enough to give him a stuffed pig named Teddy to cuddle with while he recovered. Stuffed animals can make unlikely companions for lonely animals, who are often looking for something warm to cuddle with.

Thanks to the kindness and smart thinking of the staff at Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, this brave little fella was able to quickly rebound from his injuries, making some new lamb friends to play with in the process!

If you would like to learn more about Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, you can reach their website by clicking here.

Sweet Pit Bull Rescued From Fighting Ring Experiences Love For the Very First Time.
Would you ever guess that a sweet pup like the dog in this video was once forced to fight other dogs for entertainment? It’s a sad, but true fact that Pit Bulls are the most abused breed in the dog fighting industry, simply because of their large stature and strong build. Because of this horrible industry, Pit Bulls have gained a reputation as aggressive dogs. This couldn’t be more wrong considering that Pit Bulls are just as capable of being amazing, sweet dogs as any other breed. They are only aggressive when they are starved and beaten to be that way by cruel, irresponsible owners.

Just look at the pup in this video. He is hardly the picture of a “vicious” fighting dog. All it took to turn this formerly abused Pit Bull into a pile of mush was a little bit of affection.  That’s the power of love!

No dog should be forced to suffer through the horrors of the dog fighting industry. You can help dispel the myth that Pit Bulls like this loving guy are born violent by sharing this video and showing the world that stereotypes are more fallacy than fact.
3 Dogs Rescued From South Korean Meat Farm Adjust to New Life in U.S. Shelter. In America, we view animals in two ways. Animals like dogs and cats, are our furry companions, loyal and lovable, and always welcome by our side. Others, like pigs, cows, and chickens, might be cute but at the end of the day they are non-feeling commodities destined for life in family farms. But what happens when these two worlds merge? Well, that’s exactly the case in South Korea, the only country in the world known to commercially farm dogs for meat and associated products.

Thankfully, through the efforts of the Humane Society International (HSI) and the Animal Welfare Association (AWA) shelter, three pups were spared the terrible fate in a South Korea dog meat farm and are now adjusting to their new lives at AWA’s shelter in Voorhees.

Having lived in a cage for their entire lives, Kermit, Hugh, and Irving, are now experiencing true freedom.
South Korea Pups 4
As part of an international effort to permanently end the farming of dogs for meat, the HSI’s Animal Rescue Team worked with a farm in South Korea to negotiate the release of the animals.
South Korea Pups 5
In exchange for the pups, farmers were taught how to cultivate fruits and vegetables to maintain a living.
South Korea Pups 6
While these dogs are clearly in a better place now, their journey has only just begun.
South Korea Pups 8
Having known nothing but cruelty up until now, these animals will have to learn about love and companionship.
South Korea Pups 7
It will be tough at first, but these dogs deserve it!
South Korea Pups 2
Unfortunately, it still remains legal to eat dogs in South Korea, so whether these farmers will change their ways will only be told with time. Still, every dog saved is undoubtedly a victory and we hope that in the coming years, even more will be saved as we slowly put an end to this cruel industry. All Image Source: NJ.com

4-Month-Old Pit Bull Puppies Knew Nothing but Abuse Their Entire Lives – Now They’ve Found LoveJustice was served this week when D.C resident, Brenda Bullock, was arrested and charged with three counts of cruelty to animals following an investigation by Washington’s Humane Society (WHS) and Animal Rescue League (ARL). The three four-month-old pit bull puppies she so terribly failed were surrendered last month to Animal Control Officers. Chase, Haagen Dazs, and Klondike were all suffering from chronic medical conditions that had clearly gone untreated for months and were extremely weak.

Once given their prognosis by the doctors, the three pups received over $9,000 in medical treatment and around-the-clock care from the emergency vet team. The treatment clearly took a toll, but at least the pups had each other for comfort.
Pitbulls 3
Two of the puppies were taken to an adoption facility, but Chase, who was the most severely affected, remained at the hospital undergoing treatment.
Pitbulls 2
Upon arrival, Chase was found to be suffering from demodectic mange over his entire body and was emaciated, dehydrated, hypoglycemic, hypothermic, and anemic!
Pitbulls 1
While at first, doctors were not sure Chase would even survive, after a successful blood transfusion and 12 days of intensive care, he improved enough to be transferred to a medical foster home, where he remains today.
Pitbulls 4
Despite everything, Chase seems to be in fairly good spirits.
Pitbulls 5
We hope this cutie continues to get better and eventually find a loving forever family!
Pitbulls 6
While Pit Bulls have gotten a bad rep over the years for being an aggressive and potentially dangerous breed, we doubt that anyone would wish the amount of abuse Bullock’s three Pit Bulls received under her care.

“By the age of four months, Chase and his two siblings had experienced more suffering than any living being should be subjected to in a lifetime,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of WHS/WARL. “Cruelty to animals in any form can never be tolerated and the people of our community should know that we will relentlessly pursue those that commit these crimes.”

We applaud the efforts of these incredible people and are very glad that these pups are rehabilitating well. One day, we hope that they are able to overcome the trauma they have experienced and live the normal dog lives they have deserved since day one. All Images Source: Washington Humane Society

These Rescued Farm Animals Snoozing Will Make Your Day.
Grabbing a fluffy pillow, a warm blanket, and taking a well-needed snooze is one of the simplest luxuries in life. Unfortunately, in the animal agriculture industry, where chickens and pigs compete for space and can barely move, sleeping comfortably is a luxury rarely granted. Thankfully, there are organizations all over the world hard at work rescuing animals and showing them that there’s more to life than cruelty.

Under the care of Santuario Igualdad Interspecie, the animals in this video are finally thriving and living the life of comfort they deserve! They’ve been saved from slaughter and now know that kind humans exist. The joy they exude as they rest their little heads to snooze is undeniable, these animals definitely love the TLC. Whether it’s a chick, a pig, a goat, or a cow, this video proves that these farm animals are not the non-feeling beings we paint them to be. Nope, not one bit.

Thank Airline for Helping Pets Escape Huge Wildfires.

Target: Steve Hankirk, President of Canadian North Airlines
Goal: Thank Canadian North Airlines for being lenient with flying pets for families fleeing the wildfires.
Wildfires have been blazing through areas of Canada, forcing countless families to move to safe places. This is causing a huge increase in flights out of these areas.
Canadian North Airlines has been allowing pets to fly in the main cabin. Many families were unable to return to their homes to grab belongings, including pet carriers. Typically, animals must travel in the cargo hold in their carriers. Thankfully, Canadian North has been very lenient, resulting in countless animals being saved.
Sign this petition and thank Canadian North Airlines for letting families stick together and allowing pets to ride in the main cabin.
Dear Mr. Hankirk,
Unfortunately, wildfires have been blazing through parts of Canada which has caused countless families to flee to a safer place. This has of course led to a dramatic increase of outgoing flights.
Many families were not able to return to their homes and grab their belongings, including carriers for their pets. As you know, pets are typically held in their carriers in the cargo hold. Thankfully, since many families were without carriers, you decided to let pets ride in the main cabin.
Thank you for being so compassionate and saving countless family pets from the wildfires. It is so heartwarming to see a company make such a selfless decision.
Sincerely,

These Baby Sloths Lost Their Moms, But Now They Have an Incredible Woman Helping ThemEvery day, millions of  animals are left to fend for themselves in the wild, without their mothers. But it’s not because their mothers aren’t amazing; instead, it’s because of the human encroachment that pervades these beings’ lives and leaves them orphaned. Human encroachment comes in all forms – from deforestation to the illegal pet trade to interference with tourists – and young sloths are particularly susceptible to a difficult life without their mothers.

In Costa Rica’s rainforests, these realities are ever-present for sloths. That’s why Sam Trull decided to start The Sloth Institute Costa Rica.

“I co-founded The Sloth Institute because I wanted to spend all of my energy and time getting my hand-raised babies back into the jungle,” she said.
These Baby Sloths Lost Their Moms – But Got a Pretty Amazing Person to Help Them
Sloths, like us, are completely dependent on their mothers for survival for up to three years. Sloth babies hang on to their mothers for the first six months of their life, clinging to them day and night.
These Baby Sloths Lost Their Moms – But Got a Pretty Amazing Person to Help Them
They learn everything they need to survive from their mother –  which leaves to eat – and which not to, where the edible trees are located, and where to find shelter.
These Baby Sloths Lost Their Moms – But Got a Pretty Amazing Person to Help Them
But if they lose their mother to the daily threats that endanger sloths’ existence, they, too, are left to die.

Babies are often tied up next to the carcasses of their dead family members whose bodies will be sold as “bushmeat.” Many are not even weaned and are too young to survive without their mothers.

But with Trull’s sanctuary, we hope that these orphaned sloths can re-enter their homes, stronger, more knowledgeable, and able to live out their lives in the wild.

“People can help by being responsible tourists,” Trull’s said. “When visiting a country with sloths, never pay to take a picture with one, hold one or pet one.” Following Trull’s advice means respecting nature and all of its inhabitants.

The Inspiring Story of an Abandoned Dog Who Went on to Help Rescue Over 1,000 Cats in NeedWhen you consider all of the incredible stories we hear about animals, it’s kind of shocking that we are even surprised by their displays of affection, their keen sense of awareness and their ability to make friends with other species. But it’s just this combination that made the world fall in love with a dog named Ginny and that reminds us all of the importance of giving back.

From Abandoned Pup to Life-Saver

Ginny was first discovered by a landlord after being abandoned by her owner. Found in a dark closet with her three puppies, the landlord estimated it had been a week that they had not had food or water. He contacted a local shelter to come pick them up. At the same time as the vets were wondering if they should put this dog down due to her being in such bad shape, there was another soul suffering somewhere else, Ginny’s future human Philip Gonzalez. Philip was suffering from depression due to a disability from a work-related accident. A friend encouraged him to get a dog to help boost his spirits, but he could never know that he was about to meet a dog that would not only rescue him but would save many lives in the years to come.

Philip had his eye on a Doberman at the shelter and was disappointed when he found out the dog was no longer available. The staff at the shelter suggested he take Ginny for a walk which he begrudgingly agreed to do, but something in him changed when Ginny refused to budge until Phillip looked her in the eyes. It was then that Phillip realized she was special and decided to bring her home.  It wasn’t long after that Ginny showed her new human that she was going to give the world the same kindness that was shown to her.

Ginny the Cat Rescuer
Soon after coming home, Ginny and Phillip were on a walk and she broke off the leash and ran to a pipe. She pawed at it until it broke and out came five kittens! They took the kittens to the local shelter and this would be the first of many more trips to come. Ginny’s rescue work that day was no fluke, as she regularly trailed off during her walks so that she could lead Philip to rescue other cats from dumpsters, buildings, and even a glove compartment.

This powerful pair became regulars at the local shelter as they frequently stopped by to drop off Ginny’s new rescues and to donate treats to the animals. On one of these visits that Ginny chose HER first pet when she ran to one of the kennels and began to beg.  The cat inside had only one eye which must have been just beautiful to Ginny because she begged and barked and Phillip knew he had to bring the cat home. Like all cat lovers, Ginny needed more than just one and found her next cat on another shelter visit. It didn’t seem anything was wrong with the cat until Phillip discovered a few days later that this one was deaf. Just check out Ginny and her human in action below:
And so it was just this knack for finding animals in need that made Ginny such a special dog. She would go on to bring home 20 cats! And for those they couldn’t bring home Ginny and Phillip would go around town and feed every morning and every night. It’s estimated that this special dog helped to save at least 1,000 cats in need. Ginny’s tenacity and kindness inspired two books “The Dog Who Rescues Cats: The True Story of Ginny” and “The Blessing of Animals: True Stories of Ginny The Dog Who Rescues Cats” written by her humans, Philip and Leonore Fleischer.

Ginny’s Legacy

Unfortunately, Ginny is no longer with us today as she passed away at 17 years old in August of 2005. She was eulogized at the Westminster Cat Show because of all of her hard work rescuing cats. In fact, she was even named Cat of the Year in the 1998 show. Her legacy today lives on through Philip and the seven wonderful volunteers at The Ginny Fund who tirelessly work to take care of the cats who are living on the streets.

For Philip and his friend Sheilah, this means waking up at 3am to make the 19 stops around Long Beach, New York to get food and water to the cats that depend on them.  The group also spends their free time promoting and educating the public on the importance of  Trap, Neuter, and Return programs, finding homes for rescues and raising funding for their dream of creating a sanctuary for unwanted animals.

Orphaned Lamb Gets a New Sweater, Cat BFF and all the Love She Could Ever Want
Many of us make it through life with the help of our parents. We live in a world where we don’t have to live in fear that at any moment our parents will be taken away from us. Unfortunately, animals don’t have this same luxury. Animal babies born in factory farms enjoy their mother’s presence for mere moments before being shuttled to another location.

Thankfully, organizations like Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, are able to save some of these young animals and give them a second chance at life. Elma, the orphaned baby lamb in this video, has just arrived at Edgar’s Mission. Aware that Elma has gone through the traumatic experience of losing her family, the incredible staff is doing their best to make her feel as comfortable as possible.

That means, kisses, visits from vet nurse-cat, Lilo, and plenty of bottle-feeding! We’re sure that some days will be harder than others, but we’re happy that this playful girl will now be surrounded by caring individuals ready to give her the love she deserves! Full Story:
According to Catherine Besch, co-founder of Vietnam Animal Aid and Rescue, Julian is an ordinary farm pig. Yes, she loves him dearly but she promises all pigs are like Julian - intelligent, affectionate and a bit naughty.

Cat saw Julian and his siblings on a motorbike heading to town to be raised and within 6 months slaughtered. When she saw the piglets, she knew she could only take 1 and she made the agonizing decision and picked Julian.

Master Julian lives like a king. As a piglet, he slept with his human but his BFF was Chairman Meow a stubby tailed, orange and white tabby. The piglet and the kitten grew up together. One becoming proportionately larger than the other -- but size didn't matter for these two who are still best friends 1.5 years later.

Today, Master Julian is 250 lbs and sleeps on the floor. His purpose in life is to educate the Vietnamese that animals have a name, a face and in this case can also be a friend.

He Has Spent Over 5 Years In A Shelter. Are You The Special One Who Will Change That? See-Nin is over 10 years old but don’t let that fool you. He still has energy and loves his daily walks. He has some old injuries that our vets believe are the result of being hit by a car sometime during his past life on the streets.
See-Nin is looiking for a loving home
This wonderful boy’s needs are simple. He is just looking for someone to look after him during his golden years, someone willing to enjoy walks and cuddles, and the special companionship a dog like See-Nin can provide. He gets on well with most other dogs but a home with an older female would be perfect.

It is heart-breaking to think that See-Nin might continue to be overlooked and end up spending the rest of his life in a shelter. He grew up on the streets, so he has never known what it is to have a home of his own. Can you change that?
