ISKANDARIYAH, IRAQ — An Islamic State suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt at a village football game south of Baghdad on Friday, killing at least 30 people.
The suicide bombing struck a village near Iskandariyah, a town about 40 kilometers south of Baghdad at around 7 p.m.
"They were just handing the trophy to the winners, the suicide attacker blew himself up in the crowd," Al-Asriya, a police captain from the village told AFP.
According to AFP, at least 30 people, including the mayor of the town, were killed by the blast. More than 65 people were wounded.
The attack came just hours after U.S. officials said they had killed the Islamic State's No. 2 commander in an airstrike in Syria.
