Speaking
at the Values Voter Summit on September 25, 2015, Donald Trump launched a
counteroffensive on The War on Christmas:
"The word Christmas. I love
Christmas. You go to stores now and you don't see the word Christmas. It says
'Happy Holidays' all over. I say, 'where's Christmas?' I tell my wife, 'Don't go
to those stores.'
"I want to see Christmas. No, I want to see
Christmas.... Other people can have their holidays, but Christmas is Christmas.
I want to see Merry Christmas. Remember the expression 'Merry Christmas'? You
don't see it anymore. You're gonna see it if I get elected, I can tell you right
now."
Despite his insistence that he wants to see Merry Christmas widely
used and that he tells his wife not to patronize businesses that substitute
phrases such as Happy Holidays, Trump and his own establishments routinely opt
for just such secular wording.
