COLLEGE PARK Md. - Maryland Athletics celebrated the recent Hall of Fame inductions of legendary men’s basketball coach Gary Williams with a special event Friday at the College Park Marriott & Conference Center.

“A Night to Honor Gary Williams” featured speakers Ed Tapscott, Walt Williams, Kevin Plank,  Juan Dixon, Scott Van Pelt and Kevin Anderson and celebrated the induction of Williams to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Williams was the first coach in history to be selected to both institutions in the same year.

“This is a great night and I appreciate Dr. Loh and Kevin Anderson and everyone who worked hard to make this night happen,” Williams said. “When you’re Maryland, you’ve got to be a certain way. Maryland was my dream job and it rarely works that way where you get to go coach at the place you went to school. When the opportunity came up in 1989, I really thought we could win a national championship. There were obstacles and road blocks, but we fought our way through. Players motivate coaches and those guys kept me going.”

Johnny Holliday provided the opening with welcoming remarks from University of Maryland President Dr. Wallace Loh and Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo also made an appearance. The No. 14 Terps play Michigan State Saturday at XFINITY Center.
