Layman scored 24 and 23 points, respectively, to lead Maryland to a decisive
75-59 win against Michigan State in front of a sold-out crowd at XFINITY Center
Saturday. Trimble recorded a career-high six three-pointers and Layman added 12
rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Maryland - which shot
20-for-22 from the foul line - gave Michigan State its most-lopsided loss this
season.• Jake Layman was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday after posting back-to-back double-doubles in a pair of wins against Rutgers and Michigan State last week. The junior forward averaged 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds last week and is posting 14.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game this season for the Terps. • Head coach Mark Turgeon has emphasized defense all season long. The Terps held Michigan State to a season-low 59 points last Saturday. Maryland is tops in the Big Ten in field goal pct. defense (.377) and three-point field goal pct. defense (.279).The Terps have held 14-of-19 opponents to .400 or less from the field. Maryland is limiting Big Ten foes to a league-best .380 field goal percentage, including a B1G-best .248 clip from three-point range. • Maryland’s 5-1 start in Big Ten Conference play is its best start since the Terps went 6-1 to begin the 2002-03 league campaign. Maryland - one year removed from its first-ever national championship - went to the Sweet Sixteen and finished tied for second in the conference with an 11-5 mark in ACC play. With the win against Michigan State, the Terps matched their win total from a year ago (17). • Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell joins Terrapin freshman guard Melo Trimble on the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list. Indiana leads the Big Ten in three-pointers, averaging 8.7 per game while Maryland is tops in the conference in three-point field goal defense (.279). Maryland trails in the all-time series, 5-2, but won the last meeting, 80-68, on Dec. 1, 2009 in Bloomington as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Juan Dixon, who is currently the special assistant to head coach Mark Turgeon, scored 18 points and was named Most Valuable Player as Maryland defeated Indiana in the 2002 national title game in Atlanta.

Dixon hurled the ball to the rafters of the Georgia Dome marking the
Terrapins’ first-ever national championship.• Dixon, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and current special assistant to Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon, led the Terps with 18 points and played all but two minutes in the title game. Lonny Baxter chipped in 15 points as the Terps used a 22-8 run over the game’s final 10 minutes to bring the hardware to College Park.
