Weak laws only provide cover for wildlife traffickers. Japan is trying to have it both ways. It wants to keep selling legal ivory while setting laws to prevent the importation and sales of illegal ivory. But it's not working and elephants are being slaughtered to meet Japan's retail demand.

Here's the problem. The Japanese government has an "ivory control system" that supposedly prevents wildlife traffickers from smuggling in ivory hacked away from murdered elephants. But these regulations don't work.

Undercover investigations have exposed – time and again – that wildlife traffickers are simply paying off custom officials and others to stamp their ivory as legal. Already, tons of illegal tusks have gone straight to manufacturers with commercial retailers none the wiser.

There is only one way to protect elephants: make the ivory trade entirely illegal. Join AWF in telling the Government of Japan it's time to close their ivory market for good. Be one of 60,000 to sign our petition now!
Tell Japan: Stop selling all ivory
The Trump administration is hell-bent on letting its rich friends carve up Africa's elephants, lions and other wildlife to decorate their living rooms.

So today the Center and our allies launched a new lawsuit to stop this grotesque abuse of power.

Please help the Trump Resistance Fund.

The Center's latest lawsuit targets the Trump administration's so-called "Wildlife Council," which is stacked with firearms executives and Trump business connections. Fifteen of the council's 16 members have ties to trophy hunting or the gun industry.

Among those with a seat at the table? One council member who owns a stake in Trump and Eric Jr.'s private New York hunting preserve. Another who raised more than a million dollars for Trump's presidential campaign and has 482 kills chalked up to him in Safari Club International's record book, including no fewer than six elephants.

The conflict of interest is as blatant as it is illegal.

The council was put together by Interior Secretary Zinke in the days following the administration's sick maneuvering to bolster elephant trophy killings.

By adopting a secretive "case-by-case" review process, they made it easier for trophy hunters to bring their kills home. We're already fighting in the courts to shut down this sleazy ploy.

And in today's lawsuit we're going toe-to-toe with Zinke to show that gun-toting hobbyists who kill rare and vanishing animals for pleasure shouldn't be dictating the terms under which they bring heads, hides and other parts into our country.

Threatened elephant and lion populations should not be sold off to millionaire Safari clubbers looking for a thrill.

It's past time to bring an end to the fat-cat privilege of gunning down the Earth's magnificent wildlife for an ego boost.

Please join our fight in our Trump Resistance Fund. And help the Center shut down trophy hunters who spend their millions jet-setting around the globe to put the future of elephants, lions, giraffes and other species at risk.

The U.N. Must Condemn The Killing And Eating Of Elephants

Today there are about half as many wild elephants in the world than there were in 1980, down from about 1.2 million to roughly 600,000. As creatures who play a vital role in their ecosystem and habitat, it’s crucial we do anything to prevent even one elephant death.

Unfortunately, people like Zimbabwe's former tyrannical leader, Robert Mugabe, believe otherwise as he had an elephant calf prepared for his birthday dinner.

Elephant meat is not a staple to southern or eastern African culture which means there is no cultural basis for consuming the animal, thus making it absolutely uncalled for.

End Thailand's Surin Elephant Festival!
This deplorable festival celebrates the illegally poaching and capturing of elephants for the sake of entertainment. We must save these creatures from this inhumane festival now!

Fantastic Update on Nosey!
Image may contain: text
Yesterday the news broke that the USDA is initiating a proceeding to terminate Hugo Liebel's federal exhibitor license. Without this license, Liebel would no longer be allowed to force Nosey to perform in second-rate circuses or provoke her to give rides in parking lots. He is losing his battle to regain custody of Nosey at every turn.

Because this situation is not entirely resolved, we will continue to keep this petition open, and to provide updates when possible on Liebel's exhibitor license and pending court cases.

While Nosey inches closer and closer to a life of permanent sanctuary, many other elephants are still suffering in circus life. CompassionWorks International has been tracking numerous other elephants, including Tracy and Lisa who are currently confined at Circus World in Baraboo, Wisconsin. As we did on numerous occasions for Nosey, we captured important investigative video of Tracy and Lisa, which experts determined proved that both elephants are experiencing significant gait issues. We hope that you will join us in our effort to seek justice for Tracy and Lisa by signing our newest petition: https://www.change.org/p/scott-o-donnell-circus-world-stop-using-animal-acts

At CWI, we fight against circus cruelty every single day. Please visit cwint.org/donate to continue to support our work and to stand beside us as we continue to fight for Nosey, Viola, Isa, Tracy, Becky, and numerous other elephants still suffering behind the big top.

Thank you once again for all of your actions for Nosey, your vigilance in notifying us when you have seen her or any traveling performing animal, and for supporting CWI in our efforts to put an end to circus cruelty once and for all.

We will will not stop fighting until the use of animals in the circus is relegated once and for all to the history books.

For the animals, Carrie LeBlanc, M.A. Executive Director CompassionWorks International https://www.facebook.com/CompassionWorksIntl/ https://www.instagram.com/compassionworks/ https://twitter.com/cwintl

We put on our party hats to celebrate Garaj's one-year anniversary of freedom and peace with Wildlife SOS. Here are some highlights from the festive fete.
