This Week's Elephant in the Room features the legislators in Massachusetts along with Kanjana, Maya, Jenny, Lam Duan brought to you by the Sustainable Action Network (SAN) & Sunset TV!

Tell Massachusetts to ban the use of exotic animals in circuses!
Bull hooks. Chains. Starvation. Torture. Fear. These are the tools used to train a wild animal to do tricks. Tigers do not like jumping through hoops that are on fire, and elephants do not like balancing on their hind legs with a rider on their back. We must stop this horrific animal cruelty now.

New York and Illinois have already passed legislation banning the use of elephants in the circus. A similar bill was introduced in Massachusetts in 2017, but it has since stalled.

Act now to demand that Massachusetts state legislators and Governor Baker revive the bill and get it passed.

After decades of public outcry over the horrors experienced by animals, we succeeded in shutting down the Ringling Bros. Circus. But there are still many more circuses traveling around the US that use wild animals in their acts.

Our best chance of saving thousands of elephants, lions, bears, and other exotic animals from a lifetime of fear and pain is to get states to ban live animal acts. So sign this petition now to show your support for Massachusetts becoming the third state to take a stand against the torture and exploitation of animals in the circus.

To say that Kanjana the elephant has had a rough life would be putting it lightly. Born into captivity in a logging camp, this sweet elephant was exploited from day one. After pulling logs for hours on end, baby Kanjana and her mother were allowed to walk in the jungle and catch a short glimpse of what it would be like to live as nature intended for them to. But all the while, the mother elephant was still attached to a chain, preventing her and Kanjana from ever truly being free.

One night during a walk, the young Kanjana fell into a hole that was filled with hot coals leftover from a recent forest fire. Witnesses who saw the horrible scene say that her mother tried to help her as she struggled to free herself. She eventually did, but not without lasting injuries; both of Kanjana’s back legs were severely burned, and her right ankle was broken. Even in this condition, she was still forced to continue pulling logs for the next 20 years of her life.
As if she hadn’t suffered enough, Kanjana was then sold to yet another person who treated her like an object instead of a living creature. Once the handicapped elephant was no longer of use at the logging camp, she worked for another two decades giving rides to tourists.
Recently, Kanjana was set to be sold again. But luckily, when volunteers from Elephant Nature Park heard that Kanjana’s owner planned to sell her to work in yet another camp, they immediately stepped in. The team had been desperately trying to get her released for years with no success, but this time, they were finally able to negotiate and secure her freedom!
Now, Kanjana spends her time roaming around the sanctuary as she pleases. Her days of carrying tourists and pulling heavy objects are finally over, and she can relax at last.

We’re so happy that Kanjana got the happy ending she so deserves! Still, there are many other abused and exploited elephants out there who haven’t yet gotten a new lease on life. At a young age, a beautiful female elephant named Maya was captured by humans and taken from her natural home in Asia. For the next four decades, she was forced to perform in a traveling circus that did not provide for her basic needs.

As a lengthy investigation conducted by dedicated volunteers from French animal rights group One Voice revealed, Maya was kept in dark, cramped transportation trucks in between being forced to pose in unnatural, painful positions and perform “tricks” for bigtop audiences.
To make matters worse, the circus failed to provide the adult elephant with a diet suited to her needs, and she did not get the medical attention she badly needed for an abscess on her foot and other health issues. In fact, Maya was in such bad shape a while back that a veterinarian even suggested that she may need to be euthanized.

Fortunately, the hardworking animal activists at One Voice refused to give up until they got Maya a new lease on life. Over the course of several years, they did everything in their power to win justice for Maya. Among other things, they filed lawsuits against the circus for animal cruelty, held many public demonstrations, and started a petition for Maya’s liberation, which received around 150,000 signatures.

Thanks to their endless efforts and support from the public, the One Voice team has finally succeeded in freeing Maya from the daily pain and suffering she experienced in the circus. Earlier this month, the sweet elephant was brought to a park in Milan, Italy. Here, she will live out the rest of her days without a care in the world.
Unlike when she was in the circus, Maya now has plenty of space to roam around and a pool to splash in. She gets the medical care she needs considering her advanced age, and she’ll never again be forced to ride in a truck that doesn’t accommodate her size. After a lifetime of being used and abused for human profit, Maya can finally relax and be an elephant.
