MORNING MESSAGE
Sarah
Jaffe has spent years traversing the country, covering protest movements in the
wake of the financial crisis. In her new book, Necessary Trouble, Jaffe distills
what’s she’s learned, taking her readers on a tour of today’s most powerful
social movements and introducing us to the people on the frontlines leading
them. It’s a must-read for anyone seeking to understand contemporary social
movements and their power to reshape American politics.
Trump And The Alt-Right
Clinton
to target Trump’s ‘alt-right’ embrace in Thursday speech. Politico:
“Campaigning in Reno, Nevada, on Thursday, Hillary Clinton will address Donald
Trump’s recent campaign hires and what her campaign termed in an announcement as
‘his advisors’ embrace of the disturbing ‘alt-right’ political philosophy.’
‘This ‘alt-right’ brand is embracing extremism and presenting a divisive and
dystopian view of America which should concern all Americans, regardless of
party,’ the campaign said in a statement.”
Racism
and talk of religious war: Trump staff’s online posts. CBS News: “Donald
Trump’s paid campaign staffers have declared on their personal social media
accounts that Muslims are unfit to be U.S. citizens, ridiculed Mexican accents,
called for Secretary of State John Kerry to be hanged and stated their readiness
for a possible civil war, according to a review by The Associated Press of their
postings. … The campaign has employed a mix of veteran political operatives and
outsiders. Most come across as dedicated, enthusiastic partisans, but at least
seven expressed views that were overtly racially charged, supportive of violent
actions or broadly hostile to Muslims.”
Waco’s
David Weigel explains the alt-right “race realist” theory of how Trump can
win: “In this wing of the conservative movement, Trump is seen as a
frustrating messenger who is nonetheless more aware of the problems facing
civilization than anyone else in politics. … The alt-right, in other words, is
constantly focusing on the trees and not the forest. And their theory of how
2016 can be won, or how the Republican Party could save itself, is that a
supermajority of white voters can be moved by the Democrats’ support of mass
legalization of immigrants and greater Syrian refugee acceptance.”
Election 2016
The
new birthers: Debunking the Hillary Clinton health conspiracy. CNN Politics:
“From Donald Trump and his top surrogates to the right-wing media and its engine
rooms of outrage in the blogosphere, Hillary Clinton’s opponents are ramping up
efforts to sow doubt over the candidate’s health. … Much in the way ”birthers“
(Trump was among the most prominent) sought similar ends by questioning
President Barack Obama’s citizenship, the ‘healthers’ are using junk science and
conspiracy theories to argue that Clinton is suffering from a series of
debilitating brain injuries. ”
Trump’s
stamina attack on Clinton stirs talk of gender bias. US News & World
Report: “Donald Trump and his Republican allies say Hillary Clinton is weak,
lacks stamina and doesn’t look presidential. Intent on undermining his
Democratic rival, Trump and GOP backers are increasingly relying on rhetoric
that academics and even some Republican strategists say has an undeniable edge
focused on gender. His criticism of Clinton goes beyond ”Crooked Hillary,“ and
complaints about her use of a private email server as secretary of state and her
foreign policy decisions. Clinton, Trump said in a speech last week, ‘lacks the
mental and physical stamina to take on ISIS and all the many adversaries we
face.’”
Donald
Trump Still Supports Mass Deportation For Undocumented Immigrants. Huffington
Post: “After reports emerged over the weekend that he might soften his
stance on immigration, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump confirmed
Monday that he will not back down on what has become his campaign’s signature
issue. Speaking to Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, Trump reiterated that he would
deport undocumented immigrants en masse if elected president. ‘The first thing
we are going to do, if and when I win, we are going to get rid of all of the bad
ones. We have gang members, we have killers. We have a lot of bad people that
have to get out of this country. We are going to get them out,’ he said. ‘They
are going to be out of this country so fast your head will spin.’”
Breakfast Sides
Deutsche
Bank Whistle-Blower Spurns $8 Million SEC Reward. Bloomberg: “A former
Deutsche Bank AG risk officer said he was refusing an $8.25 million reward from
the Securities and Exchange Commission for blowing the whistle on the lender
overvaluing a derivatives portfolio, because of his concern that the SEC didn’t
go after senior executives. … Ben-Artzi, a mathematician who formerly worked for
Goldman Sachs Group Inc., said he didn’t want his share of a $16.5 million
payout because “I will not join the looting of the very people I was hired to
protect.” He said his ex-wife and his lawyers had claims to a “portion” of the
money, without being more specific.”
Donald
Trump backs return of military weaponry to police forces. The Guardian:
“Donald Trump said on Monday that, if elected president, he would give back to
police departments the controversial military equipment the Obama administration
forced them to return. Speaking with police officers in Ohio, the Republican
presidential nominee indicated he would reverse a recall of tanks, heavy
weaponry and other equipment carried out by the federal government after the
2014 unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.”
