Sometimes,
life just doesn’t go the way we’d hope and, despite our every effort, an animal
can’t be saved. Simon was called to a heartbreaking case recently, where a fawn
had been severely injured and couldn’t move. Its mother was nearby but could do
nothing to help the youngster.
Simon rushed to the scene, but sadly the
fawn’s wounds were already beyond repair; it’s leg was badly broken, with an
open fracture that would have been impossible to fix, and it had a large, deep
wound on its rump that was already infested with maggots. There was nothing
anyone could have done to save it, and Simon had to put the fawn’s welfare first
and put it to sleep…
In cases like this we would normally use an
injection to put the animal down, but this contaminates the body and means we
couldn’t have left it where it was. In order to give the mother closure, Simon
opted for euthanasia with a gun - a completely painless and quick practice.
