Adopt a dolphin update June 2016 |

This café serves cruelty. It breaks my heart to write this. I’ve just found out about one of the saddest, loneliest dolphins in the world.
She’s being held in a tiny enclosure made out of rocks, rope, and chicken wire at a café in the Solomon Islands.
Her nose is covered in scratches from the rusty wire fence.
Her teeth are rotting.
Her back is scarred by sunburn.
Her name is Lulu. And I don’t know if I can help her.
Don, I am so grateful for your support in the past, and I want to be completely upfront with you. Australia for Dolphins is a tiny organisation with just two full-time staff. We take pride in doing a lot with a little, but we just don’t have the resources to help Lulu right now.
That’s why I’m reaching out to you.
Will you make an emergency donation to help? Or take the even more extraordinary step of signing up as a member of AFD’s Dolphin Defender team, to really fight for Lulu? Please click here if you can fight for Lulu
The café that stole Lulu from the wild also keeps a crocodile trapped in a tiny slime-filled cage - its dry scales cracking under the hot sun.
And, when guests have finished their lunch, they’re invited to poke and prod a sad pelican with clipped wings, as it hobbles up and down the rocky shoreline - unable to fly away.
Don, it breaks my heart knowing AFD simply doesn’t have the resources to do something to help these tortured animals right now.
Will you help change that, by making a powerful stand against cruelty? Please click here to help:
AFD has a track record of helping animals through bold legal action – but we can’t afford to research Lulu’s options without your support. What I can tell you is that we will work hard to make the most out of every single dollar you donate.
Last year our supporters funded a world-first lawsuit that stopped 62 aquariums buying dolphins from the violent hunts in Taiji, Japan. And in May they made it possible to announce a Parliamentary bill with the power to make dolphin captivity illegal in NSW.
I am so proud of what amazing people like you have helped AFD achieve on a small budget. But, when I hear stories of extreme suffering like Lulu’s, it breaks my heart to know how much more we could be doing if we had the resources.
That’s why I have to ask: Will you pitch in with a monthly or a one-off donation – making it possible to do more to protect suffering dolphins like Lulu?
Thank you so much for your commitment, support, and everything you have already done to help vulnerable dolphins around the world.
AFD receives no corporate support and no government funding. Our work is entirely funded by everyday people with massive hearts - like you.
Ollie Blackmore Cycles Mount Fuji for Dolphin Project
Dolphin Project supporter and super-cyclist, Ollie Blackmore has just committed to the ultimate endurance challenge: over the course of 11 days, Ollie will cycle up Mount Fuji, the biggest mountain in Japan as many times as possible, totaling around 25-30 ascents by bike.
After his success during last year’s Cycle Challenge Japan where he cycled 2,316km unsupported, Ollie is getting back on his bike in peak typhoon season – to help Dolphin Project put an end to the dolphin hunts in Taiji, Japan.
4 New World Record Attempts
- Most ascents up Mount Fuji on a bicycle in 9 days
- Fastest time to ascend all four road climbs up Mount Fuji in a day
- Most ascents up Mount Fuji in 24 hours
- Most consecutive climbs up Mount Fuji on a bicycle
In less than three months, the brutal capture and slaughter of dolphins will take place in 'the cove' in Taiji, as documented by the Academy Award-winning film "The Cove." Between the months of September and March, approximately 2,000 dolphins of various species will be subject to harassment, injury, capture and slaughter, all in the name of greed and ignorance.
"I can't sit back and continue to see the cruelty and murder in Taiji where thousands of dolphins are killed and forced into captivity every year. With Ric O'Barry now banned from Japan, I'm even more determined to make this cycling challenge count." ~ Ollie Blackmore
Please consider making a donation to Ollie’s epic Mount Fuji challenge. Then share this post with your friends and family. This year, more than ever, it’s vital we raise awareness and funds to help the dolphins of Taiji, while informing the rest of the world of these crimes against nature.
