Every year, over 10 MILLION animals are killed for classroom dissection—they don't die from natural causes. They're stolen from the wild, taken from animal shelters, or killed in slaughterhouses.
Dissection is bad science: 98 percent of medical schools don't require it, studies show that students are less interested in science after being forced to dissect, and it's a super-archaic, cruel way to teach biology and anatomy.
Churchill officials have an obligation to ensure that this never happens again—they need to end all animal dissection immediately. Allowing dissection to continue endorses callousness, disrespect, and cruelty to animals.
Contact North East Independent School District Superintendent Brian Gottardy and Board of Trustees member Shannon Grona and urge them to end dissection at Winston Churchill High School now.
Urge Wilmington Blue Rocks to Cancel Cruel ‘Monkey Rodeo’ Events
When PETA was informed that the Wilmington Blue Rocks will host several "Cowboy Monkey Rodeo" events at the team's stadium this summer, we immediately contacted the organization and informed it about the cruelty inherent in these offensive displays, during which capuchin monkeys are forced to wear costumes, strapped to dogs, and made to race around a track. The monkeys cling desperately to the dogs, who can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and are trained to start and stop abruptly so that the monkeys are violently jerked up and down and side to side, risking serious physical injury.
Monkeys used for these events are typically taken from their mothers shortly after they're born—a practice that is deeply cruel to both the babies and their mothers. Capuchin monkeys are sensitive, highly social animals who, in nature, live in colonies in the dense forests of Central and South America and spend most of their time more than 100 feet off the ground. Those used in "rodeos" and other live events are repeatedly subjected to chaotic conditions in public venues, where they're tormented and forced to perform confusing and unnatural tricks. Their instinctual needs are completely thwarted, and as a result, monkey "performers" often develop neurotic and self-destructive behavior. Many suffer from debilitating loneliness and depression.

Every two weeks, hundreds of pigs are sent on a horrendous transcontinental and overseas journey to be slaughtered in Hawaii.
These pigs are loaded onto trucks from farms in states like Iowa, South Dakota, and Montana. They endure a grueling trip to an ocean port in Oakland, California, where they then start their ocean voyage with Matson Inc., a trans-pacific shipping company.

Asian moon bears are a magnificent species, resembling a cross between pandas and black bears. Their populations have plummeted in the last decades, and recent estimates put the worldwide population at just 25,000. But their story gets worse -- upwards of half this population is currently in captivity, being farmed for their bile, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine.
The conditions these bears endure are horrifying: they spend their lives -- anywhere from 5 to 20 years -- in tiny “crush cages,” the sides of which can be moved inwards to restrain them. The bile is “milked” from them several times a day, by way of permanently implanted catheters that often become infected. The death rate from injury is incredibly high. Mentally, the entire ordeal is so painful that the bears have been known to chew off their own paws. Some even kill themselves by punching themselves in the stomach to stop the pain.
Scientists have scrutinized the health benefits of bear bile, but they have not been able to find any medicinal value in it. What’s more, there are now many herbal and synthetic alternatives that are just as effective, and much cheaper to buy and produce.
Though there are some bear bile farms in Vietnam, Laos and North Korea, the vast majority are in China. The Chinese people are waking up to this barbaric cruelty, and many have spoken against it. It is time for the Chinese government to listen to the will of the people and outlaw bear bile farming immediately.
Many people have become active in the fight against such cruelty. In the words of a high school girl who recently visited a bear sanctuary, “It’s brutal and disrespectful to the bears, and a disgrace to the human race.” Now, more than ever, these bears need our help. Action Needed: Stop Pork, Egg and Beef Industries From Hiding Their Shameful

In a shocking act of collusion, big
agricultural commodity groups have successfully introduced a provision in the
2017 Agricultural Appropriations Act (H.R. 5054) that exempts them from the
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). In an email to the House subcommittee
obtained by The Guardian, several big ag organizations including the United Egg
Producers, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and the National Pork
Producers, argued that their research and promotions programs, known as checkoff
programs, are not federal and should not be subjected to FOIA. The language of
the email appears almost word-for-word on page 34 of the Act.If H.R. 5054 is passed in its current form, it means that records from big ag would be shielded from citizens, media groups, and other organizations, in a blatant attempt to exempt their practices from laws designed to protect citizens. Checkoff programs, which are responsible for advertising campaigns such as "Got Milk" and "The Other White Meat"have a twenty year history of abuse. These programs spend more than $500 million per year on promoting specific agricultural commodities. As early as 1997, the National Pork Council used checkoff funds to spy on activist groups, and in 2015 the American Egg Board illegally organized a campaign against a vegan competitor, Just Mayo. Just last year, a lawsuit by the Humane Society alleged that $60 million of funds were used on illegal activities. All of these wrongdoings were exposed through FOIA requests.
The argument that checkoff programs are not federal simply doesn't hold water. These programs are federally mandated and overseen by the Secretary of Agriculture. In a 2005 Supreme Court Ruling, Justice Antonin Scalia ruled that checkoff programs constituted "government speech" and fall under the purview of FOIA.
Don't let big agriculture take away our rights! Join us in telling our elected representatives in Congress that we are sick of big agriculture’s shady practices. A 14-year-old dog is receiving intensive care after reportedly being brought to a shelter by the owner, who told the staff to euthanize her. The Lhasa Apso mix was nearly starved to death and was suffering from a maggot infestation caused by matted fur that had trapped fecal matter. The matted fur was so bad that the dog wasn’t able to defecate normally. Shelter workers say they couldn’t even touch her because she had so much debris and burrs in her fur. She’s partially blind from eye infections and has dental disease. Despite the need for more surgery, including dental extractions, the dog is expected to recover.
Photos show just how much suffering this bony dog has endured. Reports say that the owner may face charges. There’s no excuse for such extreme neglect. The owner was capable of bringing her to a shelter to be euthanized, so he or she would’ve been capable of feeding the poor animal, or even finding it a new home. Please help bring this poor dog justice by urging authorities to make sure the owner is charged and given the most severe punishment possible.

Yellowstone National Park Separated from its mother, this bison calf was photographed a few days before two Canadians put it in their SUV to take it to rangers because it was cold and shivering/Deby Dixon I met the bison calf who took a ride in an SUV early one evening as I drove west in Lamar Valley, past the pullout known as “Picnic.” The late afternoon sun on a stormy day landscape was the light that photographers dream of shooting, with wild animals on a horizon and Yellowstone National Park's gorgeous mountains off in the distance. I spotted a bison calf near the road and all alone. The calf was bawling and looking for its mother, but there were no other bison anywhere close by. Instantly, I knew three things; that the calf was orphaned or had become separated from its mother. That the calf would not be adopted by another cow and could not survive alone, and so it was just a matter of time before it died or was killed. Save abandoned animals in the Florida Everglades
This type of cruelty is unacceptable, and it’s time for Dade County to stop ignoring the animal dumping epidemic and take steps to curb this horrific practice. Please sign my petition asking Dade County to step up efforts and funding to patrol the area being used to dump pets, coordinate with pet rescue groups and work to get most of these animals off the streets and into a forever home.
It is illegal in Florida to abandon an animal. But deep in the Everglades, those who do are almost never caught. And the problem doesn’t seem to be getting better. Rescuers speak of finding dogs in the most dire situations: running in and out of traffic on busy roadways, or shivering in the middle of fields in the rain. Every year, hundreds of pets are found. Woman Charged With Killing Dog to Fake Miscarriage Must be Prosecuted Vigorously

A woman killed a dog and used its blood to fake a miscarriage, according to reports. Her husband found the 8-month-old Chihuahua in the trash can after learning that she had faked her pregnancy. Demand justice for this innocent dog.
Johnny Parker states that he found his wife, Anita Parker, covered in blood. She claimed to have flushed her stillborn baby down the toilet. Johnny, per his statement, only learned the truth after a trip to the hospital, where doctors told him that his wife had never been pregnant at all. He found his beloved Chihuahua puppy dead in the garbage can shortly after. The woman has been arrested and is being temporarily held with only a $7,000 bond.

Tyson Caught Abusing Animals – Again! Candice Bergen and Mercy For Animals
Hi, I’m Candice Bergen.
If you’re like me, you would never condone animal abuse. But if you eat chicken from Tyson Foods (which supplies McDonald’s, KFC, Chick-fil-A, and more), you may be unknowingly supporting some of the most sickening animal abuse imaginable.
How do I know? Multiple undercover investigations by Mercy For Animals have uncovered ongoing and systemic animal abuse at Tyson Foods. Most recently, a brave investigator used a hidden camera to document conditions at a Tyson slaughterhouse in Mississippi.
What he witnessed was beyond disgusting.
I watched the video in horror as workers who seemed to take pleasure in tormenting the frightened birds punched, beat, and threw the animals before violently slamming them upside down into metal shackles.
One worker even used the shackled live birds as punching bags.
The birds were then painfully shocked with electricity to immobilize their bodies before having their throats cut open. The investigator documented countless birds who weren’t shackled properly getting their heads ripped off while they were still alive and conscious.
The investigator reported these abuses to his supervisor on multiple occasions. He even called the Tyson Foods hotline to report the daily cruelty he had witnessed. But he saw no corrective actions taken. At Tyson Foods, extreme cruelty to animals is just business as usual.
But I think we can change that.
Because of caring people like you, who sign petitions like this and use their voices to speak up for the voiceless, we’ve already seen some of the biggest food companies make important changes.
For example, after hearing from thousands of people through Change.org, Nestlé, Walmart, and Starbucks all made commitments to ending some of the worst forms of factory farm cruelty in their global supply chains. There’s no reason Tyson Foods can’t do the same.

A woman killed a dog and used its blood to fake a miscarriage, according to reports. Her husband found the 8-month-old Chihuahua in the trash can after learning that she had faked her pregnancy. Demand justice for this innocent dog.
Johnny Parker states that he found his wife, Anita Parker, covered in blood. She claimed to have flushed her stillborn baby down the toilet. Johnny, per his statement, only learned the truth after a trip to the hospital, where doctors told him that his wife had never been pregnant at all. He found his beloved Chihuahua puppy dead in the garbage can shortly after. The woman has been arrested and is being temporarily held with only a $7,000 bond.

Johnny Parker found his beloved Chihuahua puppy dead shortly after learning the truth about his wife’s pregnancy, per his statement. Tell Tyson to Stop Ripping Heads Off Live Chickens
Hi, I’m Candice Bergen.
If you’re like me, you would never condone animal abuse. But if you eat chicken from Tyson Foods (which supplies McDonald’s, KFC, Chick-fil-A, and more), you may be unknowingly supporting some of the most sickening animal abuse imaginable.
How do I know? Multiple undercover investigations by Mercy For Animals have uncovered ongoing and systemic animal abuse at Tyson Foods. Most recently, a brave investigator used a hidden camera to document conditions at a Tyson slaughterhouse in Mississippi.
What he witnessed was beyond disgusting.
I watched the video in horror as workers who seemed to take pleasure in tormenting the frightened birds punched, beat, and threw the animals before violently slamming them upside down into metal shackles.
One worker even used the shackled live birds as punching bags.
The birds were then painfully shocked with electricity to immobilize their bodies before having their throats cut open. The investigator documented countless birds who weren’t shackled properly getting their heads ripped off while they were still alive and conscious.
The investigator reported these abuses to his supervisor on multiple occasions. He even called the Tyson Foods hotline to report the daily cruelty he had witnessed. But he saw no corrective actions taken. At Tyson Foods, extreme cruelty to animals is just business as usual.
But I think we can change that.
Because of caring people like you, who sign petitions like this and use their voices to speak up for the voiceless, we’ve already seen some of the biggest food companies make important changes.
For example, after hearing from thousands of people through Change.org, Nestlé, Walmart, and Starbucks all made commitments to ending some of the worst forms of factory farm cruelty in their global supply chains. There’s no reason Tyson Foods can’t do the same.

PETA and PETA Asia have uncovered shocking cruelty to geese connected with so-called "responsible" down and feather suppliers. The Responsible Down Standard actually allows certified companies to deal in feathers that are live-plucked in addition to the ones that aren't.
Workers were seen ripping geese's feathers out while they were fully conscious, leaving open, bloody wounds. Some geese struggled and cried out, while others were paralyzed with fear. Workers pinned them down by stepping on their delicate wings and necks and tightly binding their feet together.

PETA dug deeper and found that the farms that are live-plucking birds or dealing in live-plucked feathers sell to "Non Live-Plucked Products Guarantee" or "Responsible Down Standard" companies, the same companies that agree to "ensure humane treatment of animals." One buyer even bragged about misleading customers and live-plucking in secret. These certified companies supply down to clothing and bedding companies such as Eddie Bauer, Lands' End, and Hollander Sleep Products.
