Abandoned cats and kittens
I attended the abandonment of some cats and kittens last night in woods near Cardiff. There were 2 adult cats each with kittens, 1 mum was laid on a towel with 4 less than 2 week old kittens and I found 2 older kittens about 5 or 6 weeks old nearby and when I caught them their mother appeared and I got her as well, a white one of these kittens had badly infected eyes and the left eye was closed up. This is an especially callous act as whoever did it had to walk quite some distance into the woods and dumped them in as remote a spot as they could find. They were lucky to be found by our caller who was walking his dogs. The cats and kittens had not
moved from the place they were left in and were very nervous and scared and seemed to be unfamiliar with being out in the wilds. I am amazed they stayed in the same place! All now safe at the vets.

Hope for rescued chimpanzees in the DRC.
Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, but that isn’t stopping humans from exploiting these apes to devastating levels. In this episode of Insider, we take a look at the pet and bushmeat trades, and visit a sanctuary for those chimps lucky enough to be rescued from this fate.

Touching Tale of the Cat Who Inspired the Founder of Woodstock Farm Sanctuary to Devote Her Life to Rescuing Animals
From its humble beginnings in 2004, when it housed just six rescued chickens, Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, NY, has become one of the most well-known farm sanctuaries in the U.S.

In the above video, sanctuary founder Jenny Brown tells the previously unheard story of a cat named Buggy, who helped her through her childhood battle with bone cancer and ultimately inspired her to have a more compassionate view of all animals. Whenever the young Jenny cried – overwhelmed by the intensity of her struggle – Buggy would immediately crawl onto her lap and lick away her tears. Jenny said that this happened not just on one or two occasions, but was “the norm” for her.

“She was the catalyst for a different way of thinking. Buggy really changed my life. She changed the way I viewed animals and made me realize that they have thoughts, feelings and emotions, and that they’re self-aware, and that they’re not here (for us) to do with as we please,” she explained.

Today, the ethos of Woodstock Farm Sanctuary is: “Woodstock Farm Sanctuary is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness and respect to animals is our duty and that all the creatures that share this earth are here with us and not for us.” And the long-gone, but never forgotten Buggy played a major part in shaping this. Watch the video to learn more about her incredible story!

Sick, Abandoned Dog Who Was Nearly Strangled to Death By Her Leash Gets Rescued and a New Life. As animal lovers, it can be hard to understand why someone would go out of their way to harm another living being. Sadly, animal cruelty continues to run rampant across the world. Hearing stories of people abusing and abandoning their pets or going out of their way to cause harm to an innocent wild animal can cast a shadow of overwhelming sadness. But, it seems, that for every cruel person in the world, there is also one who is kind and compassionate.

These people go out of their way to right the wrongs that others have done to animals and devote their lives to raising awareness to ensure similar incidents do not occur.

Bulgaria’s Desislava Stoyanova is one such person. Stoyanova runs her very own animal rescue operation called “Save Me” that helps give the stray dogs and cats of Bulgaria a second chance at life.

If you are in need of a story that restores your faith in humanity, then look no further than that of Desislava and Gigi the dog.

Rescuing Gigi
Gigi was discovered in the city of Plovdiv, tied up with a makeshift leash and left to fend for herself.

“It seemed like someone had purposely tied a leash around her neck to cause pain. She was on on the verge of dying, unable to breathe because the leash was so tight, cutting into her neck,” Desislava tells One Green Planet. “When she saw me, it was like she knew. She finally saw eyes that were not turning away and she almost collapsed on my feet. I could clearly see she’d been through a lot of pain.”
Most likely, Gigi was abandoned. It’s not uncommon for people to have a pet and then abandon them when they no longer want them. Sadly, for the abandoned animal, like Gigi for instance, it can be an incredibly stressful experience. We all know how loyal dogs can be and this is a seriously devastating event for a dog who’s been thrown out of their home.

Twenty Day Treatment
After feeding her some water, Stoyanova took Gigi straight to the clinic. The tight leash had cut into her neck, leaving her struggling to breathe. The first order was to remove the leash, which sadly only revealed a section of badly infected skin that had begun to smell terribly. The vet predicted she’d been left for days or even weeks, from the look of the severe neck wound. On top of that, she was diagnosed with mange, a bad skin disease.
Gigi at Vet
The vet cleaned the infected wound, gave her antibiotics, and bandaged her neck. For the next twenty days, Gigi’s wound needed to be cleaned and her bandage was changed daily.
Gigi's wound
In total, Gigi’s treatment mounted up to over 500 BG Leva (around $300) and Desislava couldn’t afford even a fraction of this  amount. So she made a plea to animal lovers from her Facebook page, Save Me, asking for donations.

Fortunately for Desislava, a couple of volunteers from an organization in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, covered Gigi’s entire veterinary bill. They also later adopted Gigi, after she fully recovered.
Gigi Now
Today, Gigi is happy, healthy and loved! It just shows that with a little compassion, you can  save lives, and that’s certainly the case with Desislava Stoyanova.

“Animals have made me a better person,” says Desislava. “They’ve changed my life and in return I try to change the lives of as many as I can! Even though it is not easy, it’s gave me a purpose, as there is no better feeling than knowing you have helped and contributed to someone else’s well being!”

Compassion is Contagious
Many animals suffer a great deal at the hands of humans. At the same time, many animals live happy, joyful lives at the hands of humans. We must support the good, compassionate people on this earth who refuse to watch others suffer. We all have the power to make a change and end suffering. So the next time you see a homeless animal, don’t turn away. Help them. They depend on us for help and if we ignore them, we’re not part of the solution, we’re part of the problem.

Desislava Stoyanova’s mission to end animal suffering is an incredibly valiant one that we can all learn from. Remember, compassion is contagious, so for the sake of animals – pass it on!

Meet Ruby the Incredible Dog Who is the Ultimate Vet Nurse for Rescued Farm Animals. “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” – Roger Caras

Dogs and their humans have an unquestionable bond. Dogs enrich our lives in so many ways, that’s why we’re thrilled to be celebrating them!

Unfortunately, in some people’s eyes a dog’s worth is determined by how they look or how well they work. Meet Ruby, a purebred Kelpie with no interest in rounding up sheep, just keen to love.
Meet Ruby the Dog Vet Nurse
Ruby was purchased for a pretty penny to be a working sheep dog. When she failed her training her previous owner came to the conclusion she was worthless and packed her in the car with the intention of making it her last ride. He was taking her to a friend’s place where the friend was to shoot her. Pointing the gun at the trembling dog, something in Ruby’s pleading eyes pierced his soul and he laid down his gun. The choice to spare her life then came easy as she was then surrendered into our care.
Meet Ruby the Dog Vet Nurse
Ruby arrived at Edgar’s Mission on the 6th of July 2009. She was timid and would shy away from hands that sought to offer kind caresses. Showered with unconditional love and affection, eventually the fear started to fade and Ruby began to trust.
Meet Ruby the Dog Vet Nurse
Her True Calling
As if in return for the kindness that was shown to her, Ruby has now blossomed and chosen to take on the role she was destined for, Vet Nurse. So the saying by Marc Anthony goes: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Vet Nurse Ruby takes her role seriously, but she loves what she does.
Meet Ruby the Dog Vet Nurse
As Vet Nurse, Ruby is accountable for welcoming new arrivals with a warm wet nose and offering whispers of comfort and is sometimes required to play surrogate mum. Ruby puts in overtime when animals come in needing extra attention, but she never complains. Ruby was there for Soda Pop and Lemonade every step of the way, watching and encouraging as they grew stronger and stronger.

To keep up to speed on sanctuary procedures and direction, Ruby sits in on staff meetings and presentations. Ruby’s presence is so widely appreciated by all who know and witness her work that she is often sent gifts from around Australia and abroad. Then, at the end of a long day, Ruby lays in her bed and deservedly closes her heavy eyes. After all, she’s been working like a dog all day.

We feared she might die—mange dog's miracle recovery.
Mabel was on the brink of dying from severe mange when we rescued her and we feared it might be too late. But after 2 months of intensive treatment, watch her incredible recovery. We hope it warms your heart as it has ours.

3 Tigers and a Leopard Rescued From Living in NY Backyard Finally Reach Their Sanctuary Home. The acclaimed Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota is set to welcome four new big cat residents, after a man in New York lost his four-year legal battle to retain custody of them. Although the man had taken care of the three tigers and one leopard as well as he could, and complied with all federal and NY state regulations, local zoning changes meant that he was faced with the choice of rehoming the animals or being sent to jail.

Tammy Thies, Executive Director of the sanctuary, said, “The cats are in great shape and have good temperaments. This isn’t often what we see with privately-owned big cats. We can tell the owner cared for his cats and their well-being.”

Regardless of how well he may have treated the animals, however, the fact remains that exotic cats do not make good pets. Without adequate space to roam or experience a semblance of the lives they would have had in the wild, the animals were becoming frustrated. One of them – eleven-year-old white tiger Calcutta – was obtained by her guardian from Ashville Game Farm in 2008, after she had scratched a four-year-old child across the forehead. The child required fourteen stitches.

This photograph shows Calcutta grabbing some light refreshment.
Tigers and Leopard Will Finally be Sent to Sanctuary After Four Years of Legal Limbo
Now, however, Wildcat Sanctuary hopes to provide Calcutta and her friends – Logan, Caesar and Shadow – with 10,000 square foot habitats of their own, representing a fresh new start for each of them. The big cats’ transportation to their new home – a journey of approximately 1,400 miles – will be made a little easier through the assistance of Loving Friends Transport and Tigers in America.
Tigers and Leopard Will Finally be Sent to Sanctuary After Four Years of Legal Limbo
“They will have new lives when they arrive at the sanctuary,” Thies added, “finally having the space they need to roam and live wild at heart. Since each cat lives independently, in reality, this four individual rescues all happening on the same day. It’s a huge undertaking!”

The Wildcat Sanctuary has now launched an appeal to raise funds for the rescue mission and provide the animals with high-quality care for the rest of their lives. You can donate to this appeal, or even symbolically adopt one of the cats, by clicking here.

Abandoned Dog and Starving Kitten Find Love and Friendship in Their New Forever Home
Rescued baby orangutan Udin visits baby school.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the determination of our team of vets at the centre in Borneo, little Udin is getting better and better everyday.

Udin is now full of life and is a healthy and active little baby! He has started attending baby school in the mornings though he is not yet very confident and can often be found hugging Budi and Jemmi for comfort. The team are very hopeful that Udin will thrive in baby school, as you can see from this wonderful video, he seems to be a natural at climbing and foraging!

Sweet Video of 3 Rescued Elephants Enjoying a Dip in Their Sanctuary’s Lake Will Warm Your Heart.
The Asia Habitat's 25-acre lake has been a popular spot this summer. Shirley, Misty and Tarra have all been spotted numerous times around, and even in, the lake. It is unusual for Tarra to wade in the water, so the EleCams were lucky to be able to record this to share. Shirley likes the mud found in abundance at the water's edge, and Misty's love of water is well documented. This lake is one of the many natural featured providing environmental enrichment on a daily basis for the elephants. You can see more at www.elephants.com/elecam.

Pups in a Box – Update

In Defense of Animals
Last year, we brought you a touching story about three sibling puppies who were found carelessly abandoned in an empty cardboard box at the city dump in Grenada, Mississippi. Without their mother present, and without the aid of rescue workers from IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary, all three would have surely died of exposure, starvation, thirst, or worse.

The three orphans were taken into our sanctuary where they received veterinary care, food and water, shelter from the summer heat, and the kindness and love that they had been cruelly denied. Not surprisingly, all three of the rambunctious puppies recovered quickly and were promptly adopted.

We recently received this note from a grateful guardian about the girl they named June:
"In June last year, you posted an album of pictures of 3 little puppies that were found in a cardboard box in a dump. It happens that my husband and I adopted one of these little puppies here in Chicago. Today she is a beautiful happy dog, very sweet and clever. She understands French, (as we speak French at home), is charming with people and gets along with every other dog. Thank you so much for helping her to get to us."

Stories and updates like this are just what we need to carry us through the everyday misfortune and cruelty that can sometimes be over whelming.  Not every rescue effort has a happy ending, but the ones that do sure make our day!

Meet Dimdim and Espy

In Defense of Animals
Late in June, our managing committee member, Priya, received a call about three little abandoned pups in Vikhroli, Mumbai who needed rescue. Priya coordinated with all the animal groups she knew and Navin, a concerned animal lover, reached the initial caller who had taken charge of the pups.
He was told a horror story of how these puppies were literally thrown out of a moving auto-rickshaw in the center of a road and were rescued by the caller, who, not knowing what to do next, had called Sharmee, one of our contacts, who in turn, called Priya.

One puppy, who was very sick with a severe maggot infested wound, sadly died soon after being thrown out of the vehicle. The other two were put into a free foster home coordinated by Priya and sourced by Pooja Bhandari. There they received a lot of care by Moresha Benjamin and were named Espy and Dimdim.
