http://democracynow.org - In Mexico City, thousands of protesters are continuing to denounce the murder of photojournalist Rubén Espinosa. Espinosa, who worked for the leading newsmagazine Proceso, was killed by gunmen alongside human rights activist Nadia Vera and three other women in an apartment in Mexico City Friday. Both Espinosa and Vera had been working in the southern state of Veracruz, which has seen increasingly deadly violence against journalists and activists. According to human rights groups, Espinosa’s murder signals a new level of violence against Mexican journalists, as he may be the first to be killed while in exile in Mexico City. We go to Mexico City to speak with Sebastián Aguirre of the human rights organization Article 19 and Laura Carlsen of the Center for International Policy. We also speak to Andalusia Knoll, freelance journalist who has been reporting on social movements and human rights violations in Mexico for five years.

But Chipotle's real biggest competitor isn't a household name, according to Morgan Stanley.
Casual cafe chain Pret A Manger has the most restaurants overlap within half a mile of Chipotle's locations, according to a recent report by the investment bank.
Nearly 100% of Pret A Manger's locations are within a half mile of a Chipotle.

Comedians such as Jerry Seinfield and Chris Rock aren't the only people who feel college campuses have grown intolerant of free speech. Jim Doti, President of Chapman University, shares their concerns and says campuses are worse off now than they were ten or twenty years ago.

"People [increasingly] feel that they are victims of some kind of social stigmatization, and as a result you have to be very, very sensitive," says Doti, "and free speech is not about being sensitive."

Reason TV sat down with Doti at this year's Freedom Fest to discuss the decline of campus free speech, why he thinks "multi-cultural" centers at colleges are a bad thing, and the value of a liberal arts education.

Greek Stock Market Plunges 20 Percent After Reopening

"With these stupid governments printing trillions and trillions of new currency units," says investor Doug Casey, "it's building up to a catastrophe of historic proportions."

Doug Casey, a wildly successful investor who's the head of the outfit Casey Research, is predicting doom and gloom for the global economy.

"I wouldn't keep significant capital in banks," he told Reason magazine Editor-in-Chief Matt Welch. "Most of the banks in the world are bankrupt."

Casey sat down for an interview with Welch at Freedom Fest 2015, where the two discussed his bearish assertions, whether gold is a good investment in 2015, and why the average person is so "brain dead" when it comes to diversification.

And yet, says Casey, there is a bright side: Catastrophes create many opportunities to earn a profit.

Greek Blue Chip Stock Index Futures Open Down 15.2 Percent

The Athens stock exchange was trading around 20 percent lower by mid-morning on Monday, after falling nearly 23 percent after it reopened for the first time in five weeks.
Greek banking stocks were the worst hit with Alpha Bank, Attica Bank and Eurobank Ergasius, Bank of Piraeus and the National Bank of Greece were all trading around 30 percent lower — the daily volatility limit. Local investors will face restrictions that reflect the continuing capital controls on Greek banks that limit withdrawals to 60 euros a day. This means that domestic investors can only buy shares with fresh money from abroad or cash they have to hand, Reuters reported last week.

Greek blue-chip stock index futures opened sharply down on Monday ahead of the stock market's open, with the nearest contract ATFQ5 expiring on August 21 down 18 percent at 202 points, after falling 15.2 percent on the first trade. The stock market will open for trade at 0730 GMT (3:30 a.m. EDT) on Monday after a five week shutdown. Trading on the Athens bourse was suspended in late June as part of capital controls imposed to stem a debilitating outflow of euros that threatened to collapse Greece's banks and hurl the indebted country out of the euro zone.

Now imagine that the murderers are some of the most powerful and celebrated members of society, free to boast about their crimes with impunity.

That’s the premise of Joshua Oppenheimer’s new documentary, The Look of Silence. A companion piece to his previous film The Act of Killing, The Look of Silence confronts the perpetrators of the Indonesian genocide of 1965 from the perspective of its victims today, who are determined to learn the unspeakable truth of their past.

Reason TV spoke with the film’s director, Joshua Oppenheimer about the psychology of genocide and how his camera is changing the course of a nation.

“Every perpetrator is human," Joshua Oppenheimer says about the killers in his new documentary, The Look of Silence. "And if we want to understand how human beings do this to each other, and how they live with what they’ve done, we have to try to understand them as human beings.”

Meanwhile, new information shows that Officer Phillip Kidd and another officer on scene during the Dubose shooting were involved in the death of an unarmed African-American man five years earlier. According to documents revealed by The Guardian, Phillip Kidd and Officer Eric Weibel were part of a seven-officer team that tased and shackled a mentally ill man who was having a psychotic episode. Are Undercover Attacks on Planned Parenthood Part of a Broader Effort to Outlaw Abortion?

Many young Indiana drivers were surprised to learn the state had banned them from using cellphones while driving. The lawmakers who voted for the ban were also surprised.

“I learned it on the news, but I didn’t remember that happening,” said Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington).

Turns out at least three other representatives who voted for House Bill 1394 didn't realize it included a provision prohibiting drivers under age 21 from calling while driving (even with a hands-free device). The bill also banned GPS and even listening to Pandora. Dialing 911 is about the only thing you can still do in your car with a phone that's still legal.

Here’s hoping the lawmakers who voted for the bill pause to consider the potential unintended consequences—for example, young drivers may opt to text, a method of communicating that's more easily hidden but also more dangerous.

http://democracynow.org - In Portland, Oregon law enforcement officers have removed Greenpeace activists who spent 40 hours suspended from the St. Johns Bridge in order to block an icebreaking ship commissioned by oil giant Shell from leaving for the Arctic. Hundreds of activists have been gathering on the bridge and in kayaks since Tuesday night in efforts to stop Shell’s plans to drill in the remote Chukchi Sea. Early Thursday morning, the suspended Greenpeace activists successfully forced Shell’s ship to turn back to port in a showdown that grabbed international headlines. Joining us to discuss the action is Annie Leonard, executive director of Greenpeace USA.

General Electric Co is taking steps to shift some U.S. manufacturing work overseas now that the U.S. Export-Import Bank will be shuttered at least until September, the industrial giant's global operations boss told Reuters on Thursday.
GE Vice Chairman John Rice said the conglomerate is bidding on over $10 billion worth of projects that require support from an export credit agency (ECA) like Ex-Im.
With Ex-Im unable to extend new loans or guarantees thanks to an effort by congressional Republicans to shut it down, GE is arranging with ECAs in other countries to finance the deals involved, with much of the production going to GE plants in those foreign locations. He said, The prospective government partners include Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China and Hungary.

"We're asking that teachers be able to decide for ourselves, without fear or coerscion, whether or not to join or fund a union," says Rebecca Friedrichs, a veteran public school teacher in Buena Park, Califorina. "It's that simple."

Friedrichs is the lead plantiffs in a lawsuit filed in April 2013 that seeks to overturn a California law that requires her to pay union dues even though she's not a member of the union.

There are twenty-six states with "ageny shop" laws of this sort in place.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association in its fall session.

U.S. Second-Quarter GDP Seen Rebounding On Consumer Spending

Profits tripled in the first quarter at Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony. But the motion pictures division moved into loss.
In the April to June period the company enjoyed unchanged revenues of US$14.8 billion (JPY1.81 trillion) and net profits of US$676 million (JPY70.5 billion).
Sony’s “pictures” business segment which spans Sony Pictures Entertainment, TV productions and media networks, saw a 12% drop in sales to $1.41 billion (JPY171 billion) and the division move from profits of JPY 7.8 billion to losses of US$96 million (JPY 11.7 billion.)

Facebook Hails 'Strong Quarter' As Users Hit 1.49 Billion

U.S. economic growth likely accelerated in the second quarter as a pick-up in consumer spending and housing offset the drag from trade and the energy sector, suggesting a steady momentum that could bring the Federal Reserve closer to hiking interest rates this year. The government is expected to report on Thursday that gross domestic product increased at a 2.6 percent annual rate, according to a Reuters survey of economists. There is, however, a lot of uncertainty regarding this estimate after the government took steps to refine the seasonal adjustment for some components of GDP, which economists said left residual seasonality in the data.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has hailed "another strong quarter" after reporting the number of people who check into the social network monthly grew 13% to 1.49 billion. The rise in monthly active users helped drive second quarter revenue up 39% to $4.04 billion. Mobile advertising revenue was the biggest factor, accounting for 76% of total advertising revenue.
Its results beat forecasts, but shares still fell 1.8% in after hours trading.
Analysts said the share price drop was linked to the high expectations for the firm, which typically tends to beat forecasts, as well as concern over its high expenses. Facebook said that costs and expenditures for the quarter had surged by 82% to a hefty $2.8 billion.

http://democracynow.org - Turkish jets have reportedly launched their heaviest assault on Kurdish militants in northern Iraq since airstrikes began last week, effectively ending a two-year truce. Over the past week, the Turkish military has launched combat operations on two fronts: one against the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Syria, and another against Kurds inside Turkey and in northern Iraq, where Kurdish groups have been fighting against the Islamic State. This means Turkey is now essentially bombing both sides of the same war. During an emergency session of NATO in Brussels Tuesday, the body offered support for Turkey’s military campaigns, although some member states expressed unease over the crackdown against the Kurds. Turkey’s attacks on the Kurds come just a month after the pro-Kurdish opposition People’s Democratic Party won 13 percent of the vote, helping to deprive President Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP Party of a majority in the parliament for the first time since 2002.
