| On May 12th,
a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit a city just starting to rebuild following the 7.8
magnitude earthquake, which caused immense destruction late last month. The
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
estimates that 8.1 million people are in need of assistance. The series of
earthquakes have caused the death of over 8,000 people and injury to over 14,000
people. Our heart goes out to Nepal residents who have lost loved ones, but we can’t forget about the animals. Animals – the often forgotten victims of disasters – have also suffered from the earthquakes; the animal death toll has reached an estimated 96,404 and the number affected (including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and poultry), is an estimated 71 million.
Our aim is to ensure that the livestock can continue to be an asset for affected communities, continuing as a potential source of income and food during the disaster recovery process.
