Nepal Disaster Update: Devastation continues - an estimated 96,404 animals dead

World Animal Protection's disaster response team is in Nepal, helping livestock and local communities following the devastation caused by two earthquakes. Pictured here is one of the estimated 71 million animals affected.
On May 12th, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit a city just starting to rebuild following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which caused immense destruction late last month. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that 8.1 million people are in need of assistance.  The series of earthquakes have caused the death of over 8,000 people and injury to over 14,000 people.

Our heart goes out to Nepal residents who have lost loved ones, but we can’t forget about the animals.  Animals – the often forgotten victims of disasters – have also suffered from the earthquakes; the animal death toll has reached an estimated 96,404 and the number affected (including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and poultry), is an estimated 71 million.

By making a donation today, you will help us carry-out our immediate intervention, of addressing the needs of wounded and sick animals, and promoting animal health through preventative treatment in mobile veterinary camps. Don, won’t you give today?

Our aim is to ensure that the livestock can continue to be an asset for affected communities, continuing as a potential source of income and food during the disaster recovery process. With your generous donation, a minimum of 20,000 animals could directly benefit from our intervention, but we cannot do this without your support. Please give an urgent donation today.

By giving $10, you could provide 5 vital vitamin shots to cattle or buffalo or could pay for equipment and expertise to clean and suture an open wound, stopping the infection and pain of a suffering animal.

Thank you for remembering animals, the less often considered, but equally vulnerable victims of disasters.

P.S. Funds raised for this appeal will support animals affected by this disaster. If the funds raised exceed World Animal Protection’s needs, your gift will go to our Disaster Management work.
