#10 Terps Travel to Rutgers Tuesday; Terps Crack Top 10 for First Time Since 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After wrapping up a successful three-game homestand at XFINITY Center, the No. 10 Maryland men’s basketball team travels to Rutgers for a Tuesday tilt with the Scarlet Knights at 7 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

Melo Trimble scored 19 points, and No. 14 Maryland beat Michigan 66-56 Saturday to complete an undefeated season at home in the Big Ten. Dez Wells added 13 points for his ninth consecutive double-figure scoring performance. Senior Evan Smotrycz notched a season-high nine rebounds, four assists and two steals against his former school.

• Maryland finished its home slate with an 18-1 record in the friendly confines of the XFINITY Center this season. Its lone loss came to top-five ranked Virginia on Dec. 3 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It was Maryland’s first perfect home record in conference play since the 2009-10 season.

• The perfect home conference record was the first for head coach Mark Turgeon, who is in his 17th season in coaching overall which includes stints at Jacksonville State, Wichita State and Texas A&M. He has led the Terps to 24 wins this season after winning 17 in 2013-14. It is the third-highest win total improvement in the Power Five conferences, following Notre Dame and TCU.

Melo Trimble was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday. The guard averaged 17.5 points and connected on 11-of-23 (47.8%) from the floor in home wins over No. 5 Wisconsin and Michigan. Trimble shared the honor with Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell.

• The Terps have been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for 14 straight weeks, the longest streak since 2002-03 when they were ranked all 19 weeks. Maryland was ranked 73 consecutive weeks from 1999-2003. This week they cracked the top 10 of the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls for the first time since Feb. 3, 2003 (ranked No. 8).

• Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan is a native of Washington, D.C. and led the Washington Wizards to four straight postseason performances from 2005-08. Jordan played at Archbishop Carroll and coached Melo Trimble at Team Takeover.

• A gritty defensive battle turned in the Terrapins’ favor late in the first half, and Maryland never trailed over the final 20 minutes.

Dez Wells had 13 points, six rebounds and six turnovers in his final home game at Maryland. The Terps honored their seven-member senior class which included Spencer Barks, Jon Graham, Richaud Pack, Varun Ram, Evan Smotrycz, Jacob Susskind and Wells prior to tipoff.
Scouting Rutgers
• After an upset of Wisconsin on Jan. 11, Rutgers has lost 11 straight games, including a 92-85 loss at Purdue its last time out on Thursday.

Myles Mack and Kadeem Jack lead the Scarlet Knights in scoring, averaging 13.8 and 12.8 points per contest, respectively. Junior Etcu paces Rutgers on the boards with 6.5 rebounds per game.

• Maryland leads the all-time series, 4-3, after defeating Rutgers, 73-65, on Jan. 14 at XFINITY Center.

Trimble Named B1G Co-Freshman of the Week

• Maryland guard Melo Trimble was named co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week after averaging 17.5 points and connecting on 11-of-23 (47.8%) from the floor in home wins over No. 5 Wisconsin and Michigan. Trimble shared the honor this week with Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell.

• This marks Trimble’s third Big Ten weekly honor this season. He was named co-Big Ten Player of the Week and freshman of the week on December 1.

Wells, Layman Lead Terps Past Rutgers in First Meeting

Dez Wells scored 17 points, Jake Layman had a career-high 13 rebounds and then-No. 14 Maryland used a late surge to beat Rutgers 73-65 on Jan. 14 at the XFINITY Center in a duel between Big Ten newcomers.

• Layman and Jared Nickens each scored 12 points for the Terrapins, who finished with an 18-6 run.

Terps Crack Top 10 for First Time Since 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men’s basketball team moved up four spots to No. 10 in the Associated Press Top  25 and No. 9 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 on Monday.
The Terps, who  defeated No. 5 Wisconsin and Michigan last week, are ranked in the Top 10 for the first time in both polls since February 3, 2003 (ranked No. 8 at that time).  Maryland, winners of five straight contests, is 24-5 overall and is 12-4 in its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.

CHICAGO - Maryland guard Melo Trimble was named co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Trimble averaged 17.5 points and connected on 11-of-23 (47.8%) from the floor in home wins over No. 5 Wisconsin and Michigan.

Trimble shared the honor this week with Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell.

This marks Trimble’s third Big Ten weekly honor this season. He was named co-Big Ten Player of the Week and freshman of the week on December 1.
