An Asiatic black bear is attacked by dogs in front of a crowd at an illegal bear baiting event in Pakistan in 2010 | ||||
Because you are a trusted friend of bears, you will be just as happy as I am to learn that five more bears are finally free from the brutal blood “sport” of bear baiting. All five bears, including Diloo (pictured below), are now receiving medical treatment at our Balkasar Sanctuary after years of abuse. Once the bears receive a clean bill of health, they will be released from quarantine and join the other 28 bears at the sanctuary freed by compassionate supporters like you from a life of pain and suffering. While this is an incredible feat for bears, our work is far from over. Approximately 40 bears still desperately need to be rescued. These bears will continue to be tied down and have trained fighting dogs leap for their throat, nose and ears. As dogs get tired or injured, fresh dogs will ambush the bears, who have no way to fight their attackers. For three long minutes, these bears will be filled with fear and must fight for their lives before judges decide whether the dog or the bear ‘wins’. Can you imagine what those endless 180 seconds of terror feel like for both the bears and dogs, especially the trapped bear?
