#16 Terps Set for B1G Road Test at Ohio State

Turgeon is seeking votes to win $100,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association –the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Turgeon has a personal connection with Alzheimer’s as his wife, Ann, lost her father, Jon Fowler, to Alzheimer’s in June of 2006 at the age of 68 after being diagnosed with the disease six years prior. • The Terps are the only the team in the Big Ten with three players averaging 13.5 or more points per game as Melo Trimble (16.3), Jake Layman (14.3) and Dez Wells (13.6) lead Maryland offensively. The Terps have utilized a total of nine different starting lineups this season with Trimble and Layman being the lone two players to start every game. • Then-No. 5 Ohio State topped Maryland, 76-60, on Dec. 4, 2013 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in the last meeting between the two programs. Dez Wells had 19 points and Evan Smotrycz scored 15 which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Hall of Fame coach Gary Williams was honored prior to the game. Williams served as the Buckeyes’ head coach for three seasons from 1987-89 prior to his legendary coaching tenure at Maryland.
Terps Top Northwestern in Dramatic Fashion
• Melo Trimble scored 27 points, and a tip-in by Dez Wells with 1.4 seconds
left capped a furious comeback that enabled No. 13 Maryland to squeeze past
Northwestern 68-67 Sunday night.• The Terrapins never led until Trimble made two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to make it 66-65. After a jumper for the Wildcats, Trimble missed three-point try and Wells snared the rebound before scoring with a layup off the glass. • Trimble went 9-for-10 at the foul line and Wells scored 17 for the Terrapins, who improved to 3-0 following a defeat.
Scouting Ohio State
• Ohio State upset then-No. 23 Indiana, 82-70, on Sunday its last time out.
Freshman D’Angelo Russell was named both Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week
after averaging 27.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 8.0 assists while shooting 66
percent from the field. The guard is posting 19.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per
game for the Buckeyes.• Maryland trails 4-2 in the all-time series including a 76-60 loss on Dec. 4 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Columbus last season.
Captain Clutch
• Dez Wells hit the game-winning putback with 1.4 seconds remaining to lift
the Terps past Northwestern on Sunday night.• Wells also hit the game-tying three-pointer to end regulation at Michigan State this season, a game the Terps ultimately won, 68-66, in double overtime. • Last season, Wells hit a game-winning three-pointer against Miami with 5.9 seconds remaining on Jan. 29.
Williams Links Terps to Buckeyes
• Hall of Fame coach Gary Williams was honored prior to last season’s game at
then-No. 5 Ohio State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 4. He was joined on
the court by Jim Delany, Gene Smith and Kevin Anderson.• Williams served as the Buckeyes’ head coach for three seasons from 1987-89 prior to his legendary coaching tenure at Maryland. • In his 33 years as a head coach, he amassed an overall record of 668-380 (.637), including 461-252 (.646) at Maryland. Williams also served as head coach at Ohio State, Boston College and American.
