Dez Wells scored 17 points, Jake Layman had a double-double and No. 14 Maryland used a late surge to beat Rutgers 73-65 on Wednesday night in a duel between Big Ten newcomers. Layman and Jared Nickens each scored 12 points for the Terrapins, who finished with an 18-6 run to avert an upset.

Melo Trimble has been selected for the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, which was released Wednesday. The freshman guard is second in the nation in free throws made (120) and fifth in attempts (136) and is ninth in the Big Ten in scoring, posting 15.7 points per game.

• Maryland is the only team in the Big Ten Conference to have three players averaging over 14 points per game. Melo Trimble (15.7), Jake Layman (14.3) and Dez Wells (14.1) lead the way offensively for the Terps.

• Maryland’s 4-1 start in Big Ten Conference play is its best start since the Terps went 4-1 to begin the 2009-10 league campaign. Maryland finished its conference slate with a 13-3 record that season, sharing the Atlantic Coast Conference co-Regular Season title with Duke.

• Maryland leads the Big Ten in defensive rebounds, posting 28.2 per game. The Terps also rank 19th in the category nationally. Jake Layman has led the squad in rebounds eight times and is posting a team-best 6.6 boards per game. He’s averaging eight rebounds per game during conference play, including a career-high 13 against Rutgers Wednesday.

• Michigan State heads to XFINITY Center with a 12-5 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Big Ten play. The Spartans defeated Northwestern 84-77 in overtime their last time out on Jan. 11. Travis Trice led MSU with 18 points while Branden Dawson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

• Trimble is one of five freshmen on the list, and one of four players from the Big Ten joining Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell, Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky and Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell.

• The Wooden Award is annually given to the country’s top player.

• Trimble is second in the nation in free throws made (120) and fifth in attempts (136) while sitting atop the conference in free throw percentage (.882). He is ninth in the Big Ten in scoring, posting 15.7 points per game.
