he No. 11 Maryland men’s basketball team looks to rebound from its first Big Ten Conference loss this season when it heads to Purdue to wrap up a two-game road swing Saturday at 2:30 p.m. EST on the Big Ten Network.

• Freshman Melo Trimble scored a team-high 17 points – his 15th double-figure scoring performance of the year – and added five rebounds and four assists as the Terps fell to Illinois, 64-57, on Wednesday. Jake Layman, who saw limited action in the first half after picking up two early fouls, notched 10 points and four boards for Maryland. Trimble currently ranks ninth (16.3) while Layman is 13th (14.4) in scoring in the Big Ten. Trimble is averaging over 18 points per game in Big Ten play.

• The Terps’ No. 11 ranking is the highest for the program since it was No. 8 on February 3, 2003. Head coach Mark Turgeon ranked as high as No. 8 with Wichita State (2006) and No. 9 (2007-08) at Texas A&M. The Aggies were 10th on January 17, 2011 in his final season in College Station.

• Head coach Mark Turgeon announced Thursday that forward Ivan Bender (pronounced EVEN) will join the Maryland basketball program and will be eligible to play immediately. Bender (6-9, 230) played with KK Split in the Junior Euroleague. He was also a member of the U-18 Croatian National Team and is slated to participate in the U-20 Croatian National Team next summer.

• Maryland leads the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense (.369) and is second in three-point field goal percentage defense (.278) and have held opponents to .400 or below in seven of the last eight games, including limiting conference foes Michigan State to a .323 mark and Minnesota to a .338 clip.

• Purdue fell to fourth-ranked Wisconsin its last time out on Wednesday. A 25-3 point discrepancy from the free throw line was too much to overcome in a 62-55 setback for the Boilermakers. Five players, led by Jon Octeus’ 12.7 points per game, average at least 9.3 points per game. A.J. Hammons leads the team in rebounding during Big Ten play (8.3 rpg). Purdue is outrebounding opponents by 6.9 rebounds per game. This is the first meeting between Purdue and Maryland.
Terps Fall at Illinois Wednesday

• The No. 11 Maryland men’s basketball team dropped its first Big Ten contest of the year at Illinois, 64-57, Wednesday night at the State Farm Center.

Maryland put forth a valiant effort down the stretch, however. A trio of consecutive three-pointers by rookies

Jared Nickens, Trimble and Dion Wiley cut the Illini lead to 58-52 with 36 seconds remaining. Trimble hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt for a 60-55 score with 24 seconds to play but the Terps would get no closer.

Scouting Purdue

• Maryland Athletics will celebrate the recent Hall of Fame inductions of legendary men’s basketball coach Gary Williams with a special event on Jan. 16 at the College Park Marriott & Conference Center.

• “A Night to Honor Gary Williams” will feature speakers Juan Dixon, Walt Williams and Kevin Anderson and will celebrate the induction of Williams to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the first coach in history to be selected to both institutions in the same year.

Season Preview: Terps Think B1G in 2014-15

• With a top-10 recruiting class and his most experienced team in four years as head coach at Maryland, Mark Turgeon has the Terrapins poised for its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.

• Maryland, which finished 17-15 last season, boasts a balanced team featuring a mix of veteran leadership and key newcomers. Among the leaders is 2013 ACC-All Conferece and USBWA All-District III selection Dez Wells, who changed his number to 44 to honor a deceased former teammate for his senior season. Wells is joined by seniors Evan Smotrycz and Jon Graham and sophomore Damonte Dodd in the frontcourt, in addition to junior Jake Layman on the wing.

• Turgeon also hauled in the ninth-best recruiting class in the nation according to Scout.com, showcasing McDonald’s All-American point guard Melo Trimble (Upper Marlboro, Md.), shooting guard Dion Wiley (Oxon Hill, Md.), guard Jared Nickens (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) and forward Michal Cekovsky (Slovakia, Europe).
